View Full Version : Looking for a Clutch!

I've done a search, these aren't the droids Im looking for...
As some of you know, I blew my motor August 13th. Anyway, Im doing a full rebuild with a new motor, forged steel internals, yadda yadda yadda.
Anyway, the best I could find for a clutch so fat is the ACT 6-Puck. Apparently, the 6 Puck handles up to 370lbs of torque. Im expecting just a little more torque then that when my baby is back together.
Is there any other clutches out there for the MSP that can handle more torque?
Thanks.

Oh and thanks Ryan!

if you think you need that much... but you'll find that spec clutches hold more than rated
but a stage 5 clutch (made by anyone) would be almost unstreetable

btw:
Mazda > protege > 2003 (all the same anyways)
stage 5 holds 580 lb-ft.... rated.. personally, I am going to get a stage 3 hybrid, and I almost have my Thumper kit, and I'll be shooting for 500 hp. I'm still confident the clutch will hold the torque made with my kit

Just asking your advice. :) I was looking at the wrong table, now I'm looking at MSP.

ignore the MSP ones.... same stuff, different price. both will fit. unless you really like spending the extra money
in my opinion the spec stange 3 hybrid is the best, because it holds the same tq as the stage 4, and feels like stock... believe it or not

Spec stage 3 will do it. Why don't you guys like the ACT?

the organic street clutch only holds like 287 torque or something around there. the next step clutch they have is a puck clutch, which of course isn't exactly for the street. i've heard spec clutches can hold much more torque but are still very streetable.

It's only stage two and capable of 250-260 Ft-Lb. Too low for what you want to do, just to let you know. I'm silly pleased with my ACT!!!

Stage 3 looks like a 4 puck?
Are protege and msp clutches identicle? No difference?

Talk to ProPartsUSA about the New ACT clutch with the extreme pressure plate. It's supposed to be rated for 370ish ft tq, and has a street disc, I am very pleased with mine. Don't have the part number off hand, but Jeff can hook you up with that. I was shooting for a spec clutch when I did my build but it couldn't be ready in time and this ACT is very nice. I don't think you could go wrong with either.

I can't say much about my current transmission/clutch/flywheel setup due to the Mazda Warranty Mafia Hitmen, however, I will say I'd suggest going with a Spec Hybrid available through MAM and not the ACT Stage Two.

I will echo what everyone else is saying by suggesting the SPEC stage 3 hybrid. The part number is SZ943H.

i would stick with a full face clutch we run 500+hp on one, it is easier to relpace a clutch than a tranny

MAMotorsports sells a SPEC full face clutch capable of holding over 500lbs*ft. It is a Stage 3 hybrid so it feels much closer to stock than their stage 5 ever would. Send Beau a PM, he can get you one. Linuxracr just bought one from him...
You will not find it on the Spec website, you have to order it through Beau.

Currently we are having Spec build a clutch for us.We are using there Stage 3 with a different pressure plate and different hybrid compound to get a stock pedal feel but yet hold 400-500HP.Linux just got one and he can tell you how it feels and holds. The Spec Hybrid from us is $369.

That looks sweet!
The spec 3 hybrid isnt listed on their parts site. What is the difference between a spec 3 and spec 3 hybrid and how much did it run you.
Also, how much was the flywheel and did it make a difference as well?

Hybrid is ceramic and Kevlar.
Now with the Stage 3 we have built we use a different weave of Kelar(to help ease the damage to the flywheel) and a new compound they came out with a few months ago.
It is a 6 puck design(helps with engagment)and is good for roughly 400-500HP.
It's $369 for the clutch setup and $379 for the aluminum flywheel.
