you think buying a new shifter would solve this?

Not really, i think its from the transmission itself. *shrugs*

its the heat shield maybe? Is yours the stock shifter or an aftermarket short shifter? After installing a shortshifter, you're supposed to push the heat shield up (against chasis) so that the shifter will not hit the heat shield. I don't know if the stock mp3 shifter will do that too, but worth a try.

jack the car up and just push the heat shield directely up towards the sky. Or you can have a friend change gears while you're looking under and see what's actually happening.

eh, kinda sounds like you aren't perfectly in gear, and its "clunking" in... it happens all the time.

it happens off and on, it will go in smoothly one time and then *shift...BAM LOUD CLUNK* its scary but nothing seems like its going bad or anything and its still driving so i think its ok for now

theres a back mount on the shifter assembly. its right above the heatshield. my clunk (similar to yours) was that that rubbre mount broke. so i just rigged it to stay up there.
