I know there are already a lot of threads with "post your wheels etc." I think we need a thread with only Protege 5 aftermarket wheel pics, so our members can have an idea of what would look good on their P5. So post you pics, include info like offset, tire size, suspension and wheels size. :D

I bought these rims for the snow tires. The tires are Dunlop Grasslic's 215/55 R16, they barely fit. Fender gap is 3 fingers all the way around. The car sits up a bit higher how as it's on the stock suspension. The rims are from a 95 GSX Eclipse that I painted bronze.

YOu have to go through the dealer for the MSP bumper LIP and maybe the deflector as well.
I'm wondering if anybody has pictures of a P5 on 15' or 16' Rota Slipstreams? Picturing it in my head isn't enough.

I have some questions about aftermarket wheels...I hope I don't sound too stupid:
1) How do you adjust the offset?
2) What is the biggest tire size you can have w/o rubbing on a lowered P5 (eibach pro-kit or similar setup) I'd like to get a 17" wheel with a tire of decent thickness because there are a lot of potholes around here. How wide of a rim can I get and what tire size should I be looking for?
3) Do you need to adjust your speedometer to account for a different wheel size? If so, how?
N2OInferno
11-10-2004, 12:12 AM
1.) You don't, wheels are made in a certain offset.
2.) 215/40/17 for width and offset:
7.0" +45 and higher
7.5" +48 and higher
205/40/17 for width and offset:
7.0" +42 and higher
7.5" +48 or higher"
3.) If you use one of these sizes which is so near your stock total diameter, the difference will be negligible. You may be able to recalibrate your speedometer if you really wanted to, but I don't know how to do it.

Hi N2OInferno and all
any idea about 16*7" wheels? is offset +42 enough on a P5? thanks
NJP5Guy
11-10-2004, 07:55 AM
you can run 18's. just use the highest offset(less chance of problems). as long as you use the correct tire size on that 18.(215/35/18)
as for the 16x7 rim you can use a 42 offset. offset is not dependant on rim diamater but rim width. use a 205/45/16.
NJP5Guy
11-10-2004, 07:57 AM
also, a few companies make a 215/35/17 which would be a better fit(diameter wise) than a 215/40/17. personally im going to go w/ a 205/40/17 when i get new rims.

a 215/35/17 is nearly identical in diameter to a 195/50/16 tire. the 215/40/17 is slightly taller than the orig diameter(by about 1/2 in or so give/take 1/8 of an inch.). its not drastic. you are fine running the 215/40/17 its just the other size is better.

:( something hit my rear driver's side wheel on the highway about a week ago.. scraped the inside of the lip and took a few chunks of paint out of two of the spokes.. I have no idea what it was that caused it.. So now I have two slightly curbed wheels from my driveway that is about a foot wider than my car at the most, and one that got battered by highway debris..
I think it's time for some new rims soon.

Well ladies and gents.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p>
I needed to change my tires on my car. I have MSP rims on my MP5.<o:p></o:p>
Therefore, the search went on, I looked in Consumer Reports on tires. Found out the tires I was looking into and reading about was on top of there list.<o:p></o:p>
What tires<o:p></o:p>

Well I had them put on and guess what?, The road noise is about all gone, the handling is much better than before , just very happy with these tires.<o:p></o:p>

but you also have to take into consideration that guide is a generalization. different tire companies have different dimensions for the same size tire. its messed up if you ask me. that guide says a 215/40/17 is 23.8 in in diameter but some tire in that size are actually over 24 inches. like i said before you are fine running a 215/40/17.

i looked around and found only one make in a 215/35/17. it was pirelli. yeah, that diameter was only 22.9 from their data so it was smaller than the stock size. i didnt think it'd be that much....thought maybe a couple tenths or so but not 8 tenths. oh well

'03 MSP Racing Harts
Espelir springs (claimed 1.4" drop F&R)
IN reality the rear seems to have dropped about that, maybe less and the front a bit more (which is good as I was ass-heavy before) measurd across the centercap of my wheels to the edge of the fender, I'm sitting at about 23-3/4 in the rear and 24 upfront. I seem to recall that prior to dropping it was 25 and 25.5 so about 1.5" drop upfront and 1-1/4 in the rear is close to reality. and seems about right.
I'm very pleased with this setup. Initially I'd got the 'speed wheels and hadn't really planned on much of a drop, but as soon as I drove it hard, I realized that all that extra traction had a negative effect on my handling balance. I was kind of torn between springs and a swaybar until the info on the new Espelir's started coming around, and it all looked favorable, stiffer rear rate relative to the front which in my theory relates to a quasi-swaybar setup. In reality I REALLY like the combo. Much more competent at speed. Cornering is very sharp and requires much less back and fourth on/off throttle input. Not to mention 40mph twisties are now 50mph twisties. it's THAT much of a difference. The end result is me with a grin on my face. Oh, and it doesn't look half bad either ;)

You're gonna hate me, but they cost me shipping, and a trade of my stock (albeit freshly warrantied) wheels/tires. Guess it was kind of a matter of good timing, but I did have to drive on my snows for a month plus in the summer. Butyea, I guess good kharma catches me every once in awhile..

Wow, Poseur, everytime I look at the pics of your car in the snow, I cringe. Do you have winter/snow tires on there?? How does your car even move??
I've got my car parked in the garage, and we had some snow and ice here a week or so back. Well its starting to melt away now, and there's only a little bit of slush left on the driveway, and as soon as my front tire hits it, it just spins like crazy and the car goes nowhere. It was so humiliating not being able to move on a tiny little bit of slush.

*L* well I've got michelin arctic alpins on steelies that I normally run in the winter, but this year there's really been crap for snowfall here, so I've been lazy. Resorts aren't even open yet, so why bother? That was jsut the roadside patch of it, really it's a very heavily travelled freeway and temps are never much lower than 30. Butyes, not the best of traction in the white stuff. Not horrible, butyea...
Oh, HEY! I totally forgot that I get to postup in here myself now...
Oh, and it doesn't look half bad either ;)
how much did the springs run you, if you dont mind me asking? the more i read about the espelir springs, the more intrigued i get.

Thread jack....kinda.....
This has been a real good post for me. I'm in the market for some rims - I'm thinking of the Rota Attacks - 17x7.5 @ +48offset.
What I really want to know is what size tire....215/45/17 or 215/40/17s?
I know that the 40s are closest to the stock tire height, BUT would be a firmer ride. The 45s were recommended for a daily driver like mine BUT will throw the speedo off due to being about an inch taller that stock. I have the Espilars with Tokico blues so I sit a little lower.
So what does everyone think? Are the 40's too rough?
Thanks all.
Peace

i wouldnt say too rough -- but it depends on the tire too ---
you can buy a 40 thats ok with one brand but rough as hell with another brand -- But you will corner better with the rougher ones ---
instead of 215 --- try 205\45 -- this will keep you a tad bit closer on the speedo :)
bonesmp5
01-30-2005, 06:18 PM
try this --- it ist allways 100% but it gives a good idea as to what you might see on the speedo with different tires :)
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
just put in the stock size then the size you want --- it'll tell you have fast the car is going when the speedo is at 60 ----

bonesmp5, thanks.
I actually had that tire calc. thingy bookmarked but didn't know they did the calculation for you at the bottom. That's cool.
So, it depends on the tire - which makes sense. I'm gonna have to go into Auto RnD and talk with Rishie to get the skinny on which tire.
Thanks.

I'am running 17x7, 48mm offset, with 215/45-17's.
The car is dropped with Eibach prokit and Tokico Illuminas.
I had to roll the back fenders because the tires were rubbing with bad road conditions.

Thanks GhostLinker,
What brand/make of rims do you have (Pix?) and:
How did you roll back your fenders?
I'm thinking of the Rota Attacks which are actually 17x7.5 @ +48. Some posts say they rub, some don't - I guess it's just luck(??).
Since this is a wheel thread, has anyone heard of an offset larger that +48 for the P5/Protege/MSP? Wouldn't that cure the rubbing issue?
Hmmm....more searching I guess.
Thanks,

I have no rubbing in the back with GC coilovers almost all the way down. I did have a little rubbing in the front with the stock bridgestones that came on the wheels. I have since put on a set of toyo proxes 4's and i have absolutely no rubbing whatsoever. front rear, lock to lock whatever. nada

Even a 35 series ends up being larger diameter than the stock wheel. I wouldn't think you'd want to go any bigger than that.
The kidney beating isn't that bad...but with a +42 offset, you're going to HAVE to roll the fenders. That's what I run and it definately rubs.

Axis NE-O 17" in white. The offset they come with is like 39mm, but I had them milled down to 42mm to fit, and I also had the hub center diameter increased by 3mm on each wheel to clear the rear hubs. Basically, these wheels WILL NOT FIT if you're just trying to get them to work right out of the box, but I had to have them, and it all paid off.
Lowered with iON Sport Spec springs, no rubbing at all. 1mm clearance between tire and quarter panel.

Your tires will be 1/2" larger in diameter (and obviously 10mm wider). If you don't lower you should be fine. However, if you do lower, you risk rubbing. Carmaniac is lowered on Eibachs I think (1.4" drop).
The stock 195s on a 7" wheel will bow inward. This is probably why he isn't rubbing. On a 205 you won't have that bow so the tire will be inline to rub if the car is lowered. This is why I'm trying to set up a group buy of the Rota GT3s in a +45 offset.

Ok, here we go...
First off, the fake fender flares. They're appliques that make the fenders look wider and have a fake "power slot" on the back that lets hot air out on sports cars, but doesn onthing but add weight on that one.
The paint job; wierd, lightening/tear patterns in a color that does not match the mai colof ot the car.
The body kit; front bumper makes the car look like somebody just punched it in the mouth and the lip is all busted and swolen. The back bumper doesn't look bad, but still too showy for me.
The lambo doors; enough said
Sound system is nice, uses Audiobahns best subs. I still dont like Audiobahn, all their speakers sound like shit, but the top of the line ones will sound as good as a JL w5, maybe a w6 if they're tuned properly. They'll be louder than either of those all day, but they'll sound like shit.
But mostly the front bumper and paint job are what make me want to smash it with a forklift.
