So hard to choose! I want to swap to 17" this summer, but I can't make up my mind on what rims I want! What do you think of those? Don't know if it's a car on the forum, but they're Axis Neo. No clue on the price, weight or offset though.

That looks a lot better than I thought it would. I'd want a bar in the back too.

The tires are just some Generals. The usual 205/40 setup. The rims don't seem to be very heavy but what do I know. I haven't been able to find the weight specs on em.

Hey guys,
I'm looking to put some new wheels on my 02 Pro5
four 16x8 OZ wheels
>5x114.3 lug pattern
>40 offset
Tires: 245-50
Will this setup work? What is the basic rule about offset?
Does a smaller offset mean that the wheels sit more inward?
I need some basic advice, cuz I need some new wheels badly.
Thanks

05-22-2009, 12:06 AM
Also how do you think they will look?
Rockin03mp5
05-22-2009, 08:47 AM
i think 16x8 will be too big, especially at +40 offset.
from what i know (some may beg to differ) +45 is the lowest you should go for offset. and 8'' wide might be too wide.
if you already have them though, which it looks like, doesnt hurt to try.
if not, i would doubt they would work without a lot of work.

05-22-2009, 09:55 AM
The limit without rolling the rear fenders, as far as my personal experience, on a 16x7 wheel is +42, and that had some decent rubbing already. Plugging that into THIS (http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp) tool, a 16x8 +40 would stick out another 15 mm, which would likely require a SERIOUS fender pull to clear, not just a roll. And with 245s, you have exactly zero chance without doing some serious fender modification.

Gracias gentlemen,
I was just wondering if it was even worth going to look at these wheels (someone had them for sale on craigslist).
I've since taught myself more than I ever wanted to know about wheels and offsets.

I am looking to pickup a P5 tomorrow, maybe. Its for courier work so I won't sink alot of money into it, but that doesn't mean I don't want it to look nice as I plan on keeping it for quite awhile.
Looks like most of the wheels available have high offsets. I want some lip!

^^^ Imola, i think if you drop it a bit, and or get some thinner tires it'll look alot better of course.
but the thinner tires is a must, it'll make those 17"s look alot bigger and stand out more than those thick tires, but other than that i love it.

^ nice!
My OEM's were "chrome" and flaking bad, plus the 16" tires were BALD from bad bearing and alignment issues...
I picked these up with WAY over 50% tread for $250. Way cheaper than 4 new 16" tires.
This is my daily beater, I did have some MSP springs on it at one point, but they only lowered the front .5," the back was dumped at 1", the reverse rake was not attractive. I'm digging the nose-bleeds actually, I can run over stuff. I'll save the suspension mods for the bimmer...

These are by far the nicest rims I've seen on a P5. Can you tell me how much you have lowered the car and if you have any clearance issues? Also, when I do a search, the Heidfelds that come up don't look like yours. They don't have all of the rivets?

I'd ask the seller these questions
1)offset
2)bolt pattern
And do you drive a hatch or sedan?
If you drive a hatch you'll want at least a +45 or higher offset, sedan you should be able to get away with +42.
And bolt pattern for our cars is 5x114.3/5x4.5

What a great thread! I just picked up some 18x7.5 +48 gunmetal Volk TE37s and I can't wait to mount them on my P5. Now I just have to pick some tires!
I have been reading some of the very informative threads on the forum and it would appear the safest size of tire to run is 215/35/18. It looks like at least ONE person is running 215/40/18. I have a completely stock suspension and I would prefer a 40 series tire over a 35. Why is 215/40/18 no good? Is it because the tire will hit the spring perch of the strut? Because there's plenty of room under the fender.
Input from anyone with experience would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.
Matt V
10-17-2009, 11:29 AM
I'm so jealous, those are my all-time favorite wheels.
I would run the tire size that is recommended on here if you don't wanna run into issues with rubbing.
CalgaryAE92
10-17-2009, 07:15 PM
Thanks Matt V. I lucked out a bit with the wheels. There was someone selling a slightly used set locally (wheels are date stamped Feb 2008) and they are in fantastic shape. He was running them on his Prelude.
I thought about it some more and you're totally right about the tire size. Besides, Tirerack is having a crazy sale on Hankook Ventus RS2's in 215/35/18. $71/tire. I couldn't believe it. So I just ordered a set! I'll have to post pics when I have the wheels on the car.
CalgaryAE92
11-17-2009, 06:20 PM
So I put the TE37s on. Overall, I am very happy with them! I was concerned that 18's might look too big, but I think they're alright. I'm also on stock suspension and the 215/40/18's on there right now don't rub at all and fill out the wheel wells quite nicely. However, the tires are worn and will be replaced in the summer with the 215/35/18's that I've already bought. If I would have known, I think I would have picked up some 40's instead of 35's. Anyhow, I think the wheels will be on for a week and then they'll have to come off before it snows.
NICE wheels. now u need to lower it :D

Sorry, didn't mean to change the topic to "clunking".
Anyhow, back on topic. I've added a couple of more close up pics of a rear wheel and one of a front wheel. You can see that with the 215/40/18 tire (Falken FK452), it gets close to the spring perch, but there's definitely enough clearance room. Same story up front. Also, there's no rubbing at full left or right turn. The wheel itself is 18x7.5 +48 and it gets close to the suspension, but it also clears.
So I don't know why the fitment guide says to use 215/35 and it looks like most people that run 18s do the same? I know every tire is different, but has anyone had problems with 215/40/18's?

the tires size is set up 215/35/18 so its closer to overall stock wheels and tires for better performance. But it up to you in the end in what you want. Im using 205/40/18 tires on my 18x8 rims=)

I can totally understand that, especially since it's so hard to shop for wheels for this car (fitment-wise).

So far I am....just had the car inspected and the fronts are 7/32 and the rears are 5/32. I ran them approx. 3500 miles last year and not sure how many miles the original owner put on them the one season they were used (bought them used off of cl for $100).
And they are WS-50's. Only gripes are noise and mushy feel on dry pavement but they are snow tires, so.......

That sounds very good. Mine are LM-25 with slightly harder compound, I think. Hope to get some decent treadwear results with them as well.

I had that setup without any roll and it rubbed terribly, so I think even with a roll you'll rub a bit ... that is assuming that you're dropped.

The tokico/espelirs were a smoother ride, but the BC's handle like a mo'fo'. They are stiffer and you can tell, but I LOVE them.
I upgraded tires too. The Bridgestone RE760's are the BEST tires I've had. They don't tram and they fixed the pull I had to the right. I apparently had a bad Yokohama on before. I had them balanced multiple times and was told "that's all we can do".

DG??? Deals Gap???Yes, Deals Gap. I'm from North Carolina :D Haven't been up there since...2006. Use to love going there, but then it got waaayyyyy too crowded with too many idiots and too many cops. Cherohala Skyway is much nicer IMO. A lot of roads to head to when it gets to thick at the Dragon. :D

what is the thickest spacer you can get without getting extended studs?
justanothermp5

10mm spacer is pushing it, you can barely get the lug to thread on, so i would say 5-7mm

Picked up an 88 626 (4th one Ive owned now) for a steal. Came with 17's on 205/35 yoko ES100's. Going to try them on my yellow P5 for shiggles, hub size allowing. I bet they're heavy, not sure what brand either since there is no label.

Wow it is turbocharged? I current have a 1991 Hatchback turbo that is waiting for motor rebuild. Sorry off topic.

Awesome thanks, I really like my Mazda 3 16's but I'll put these on anyway to see it. My cars yellow so it may be completely different (naughty).
I wish it was a turbo, I had an mx6 gt that was immaculate. The JDM motor sites have F2T's for cheap and I would love to hold onto it and drop one in. Turbo and some eibachs would make this a badass classic.

No I don't, I'll have to take some tomorrow. I got lots of camber on the rear to make it fit and am about to buy some 5mm spacers to put up front. I'm running 215/40 tires

finally on the last page i find my answer..
so ur saying that ur still planning on spacing just to push them out..
what do u think about rims that are 17x8??..urs are 17x7.5 and yet u still have some space to use spacers..u think the 17x8s will have bad rub issues??

it would rub inside the wheel wheel, get spacers.

New Wheels/Tires Fitted Today(lick)
Wheels/Tires:
18x8 +35
225/35/18 S-drives
Rolling/Pulling:
Front - rolled flat and slight pull
Rear - rolled flat and pulled seriously I think an inch or so (which ironically looks somewhat widebody like because of the way the fender is in the rear. Very satisfied!
Alignment: TBD (gonna probably have to do camber bolts all around. More negative in the front which will help turn in and fit a little better, and a little more in the rear for slightly better (peace of mind) fitment.
Suspension:
Tokico Blues
Tein S-techs
Pictures to come by the weekend for you guys!

Things to note:
Both rear fenders had inner rust before trying to roll them which is why they look a little bad towards the back. Spring time I`m gonna fix all that and blend it better before paint. Also want to do retrofits and tint the orange sidemarkers black. Then project DD will be done.

my mom got a civic like thta(but blue) and REALLY hate the electronic throttle!! When you shift you have the let the gas go for a moment THEN press the clutch because otherwise the rpm rise. I cannot shift correctly at high rpm to save my life lol. i just dont understand why they did that. horrible thing.
EDIT: but the car drive like a charm :p
