What are the cheapest lightest 16" wheels I can get?
GhostLinker
07-21-2005, 07:12 AM
They are a bit more expensive then your average wheel ... but they are very light (and they look good !). 15.2 pounds per wheel !
This is the price for 17x7 at tiretrends is $324 CAN
You cab also go on www.wheelspecs.com/ (http://www.wheelspecs.com/) and search for wheels.
Just remember you will need at least 45mm offset for the P5.

just curious about the weight of my 18 inch enkei RS7's.... anybody know what the weight of one of those is, or where i could find the weight? All i know is when i took them off to replace my brakes, they weren't heavy at all.

i found this for you-- off a suby talk page -- this is what one member had to say about the wheels you asked about -------
Pics of Enkei RS7's on Silver GT

Man the black rims on a silver car with dark tinted windows looks freakin sweet. These things fit great with the 1" drop from the STI springs.
18x7.5x45mm offset. Very flush fit with no rubbing no matter how hard I tried. 225/40/18's Bfg Scorchers. Don't know how good these tires are, pretty much came in a package deal, but they feel freakin wonderfull compared to stock.
Stock smooth ride, a little noisier at 80 on the freeway, much better turn in and handling, strong grip with no more front tire spin at launch. For you guys that got bigger better tires, did you notice that the brakes feel much stronger now. They always felt a little spongey when stopping from anything over 55mph. The initial bite of the brakes feel a little better, and overall stopping had a nice noticable improvement, with the car feeling a lot more stable!
Downside, the rims and tires weight 6lbs more than the factory. Factory was 37lbs, these are 43lbs. I thought for sure I would notice a performance difference or loss, but the car feels exactly the same. I have heard that turbo's liked a little resistance for making better power, or the difference is negligable!

I've been looking myself for some 16" rims, and all I can find in that size are the 4 bolt pattern. I want to get some five spoke pattern (similar to Gram Lights) and it looks as though I may have to go with 17" eventually. Sucks that it's so popular to supersize rims now, limits the choices for the rest of us.

You know, I wonder how the Mazda6 rims would look on the P5. I wonder if they'd fit... I think they'd be fantastic, those are really some of the best stock rims in existence in my opinion. They're pretty close to the 2002 P5 rims, but just that much more edge to them.
Phoenix5
11-29-2005, 01:29 PM
I'm sorry to break it to all you guys but I think these 16"s look sicker than all of your 17"s. I think 17"s and more so 18"s make the tires look too thin on the P5.
carmaniac, you got any more pictures? Your site looks incomplete.

I recently purchased a set of practically new (about 3,000 miles) wheels/tires from a friend of mine who had them on his RSX. One of my stock rims had been slightly bent resulting in uneven tread wear. Besides, I was in need of a new set of tires anyway...but I digress.
First, some of the details. The wheels are Rotas, 17x7, +45. The tires are BF Goodrich G-force, 225 45 R17. I know the whole setup is big, but having read some of the threads here it seemed to be about the biggest I could safely run. Suspension is stock. I had issues with the rear wheels not sitting right, so I went with 3/16" wheel spacers (no spacers up front). My problem is the rear wheels rub the fender when I go over large bumps/dips. No rubbing observed so far up front.
I'm looking for a fix that wouldn't set me back too much. Is the current wheel setup gonna be too big for the car? Are the spacers creating the issue? I appreciate any and all help anyone can provide. Thanks!

45 offset with 225 alone is going to be tight. I was running 205's with 45 offset and had to roll the LR fender. 225's and spacers will probably be too much. What was the issue with the rears that you put spacers on?

The shape of the rear hub wouldn't allow the new wheel to sit flat (the hole in the middle of the rim wasn't quite large enough to fit around the protruding center of the hub--does that make sense?). The spacer was the only way for the rear wheels to be positioned correctly.
If it turns out I need to have the rear fenders rolled, what all is entailed?

Understood. your best bet would be to find a machine shop to bore out the center hub on the wheels so they fit properly, spacers are not the best way to go.
There are different ways and tools to roll fenders. Do a search on this board and the internet. Some tools attach the the hub and some are freehand.

Thanks for the advice. I'll do some research and find out what my options are. To offer up another possibility: would stiffer springs keep the wheels from bouncing enough to make contact?

Most stiffer springs will lower the car as well. The spacers are solving your hub issue but affecting your tire hitting the fender.

It will HELP, but who knows how much. Those are big tires.
Fix your hub issue and go from there. My Rotas had the same problem on the rear as well. It didn't seem like you need much extra clearance at all... maybe you could use a dremel and file down either the hub cap thing or the hub bore of the wheel.

They're 225/45/17's riding on 17x7.5 (+45 offset) rota subzeros. Suspension is stock. The outer sidewall is making contact with the inner fender (not the wheel well, best I can tell, but the bent lip of the fender) when going over large bumps/dips. This happens with the back empty; I can only imagine the horror show with passengers in back.

really? thats odd i kno those are big tires but i wouldnt think they would make contact with the fender, maybe downsize to a 215 45r17, that should work better in my opinion

Next time you need tires, I'd get 215/45/17s like mentioned. Do you have a sedan or a wagon? Wagon has less room in the rear. Check this thread out: http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9129

Thanks, once again, to everyone for their input. I have the wagon. I saw that thread just today, unfortunately too late for my situation. The only reason I went with tires that big was because they came already on the rims, which I bought off a friend at too good a price to pass up. Unfortunately, any savings I thought I might have gained by buying through a friend will probably be negated by the time I figure out a way to fix my problem.
Another thing that's adding to the problem which I forgot to mention in my last post was that I had to use spacers (3/16") to make the rear wheels sit correctly on the hubs, making an already bad situation worse...

They are 17X7 +42mm with 205/40/17 tires. I am lowered with Tokico HP and Tein H tech combo. The drop is very subtle. I think S tech would be much better.

After much drama with a previous set of wheels, I settled on these.
They're 17" Drag DR-19, +45mm offset, wrapped in 205/45/17 Kumho Ecsta AST's. Obviously I'm not lowered at the moment, but the 45 series does a little bit better job of filling the gap than 40 series. No rubbing issues with this set.

Thanks. You know, I had some gunmetal rims of a different variety for a little bit. While I liked the look, I didn't have any other dark accents on my car to tie in with them. To really bring the look together, I would have ended up tinting windows, smoking the taillights, etc, etc. With the silver, I was going with something I already knew works as-is (like the stock rims) and looks good.

Nope, the width is fine - people most often go up to 7.5" wide wheels and a few people have actually run 8" wide wheels with no rubber. That unless you're talking about the offset then, yes. The problem there is the offset and that, more than likely, any bump you hit will send the edge of the tire into you fender - not good for either.

They just probably have a generic "Protege" catagory in which they lump them all together. The sedans can actually go with slightly lower offsets because they have more space in the rear wheelwells (that's where we get hurt). Even so, +40 mm seems low, even for a sedan. I agree, I wonder where they get their info from.

Seems like a stock wheel size, what type of wheels? The +55 mm offset seems a little high, but with the smaller wide and tire you should be fine. I only say this because I currently have the MSP Racing Harts which are +55 mm and I rub the inner rear fender liner when the rear of the car is loaded.

Ya, the high offset has me a little concerned but I guess I can run some spacers if I have to. Wont know until they come in and I get them mounted up. Do you get the rub due to your drop and/or tire size?

Ooo, those look nice, I don't think I've seen them before. But yeah, it could be because I'm lowered. I was just under the rear of the car today and I was looking at that particular area. There really is a very small gap currently back there and I can easily see how it rubs when loaded. I'd venture to guess that without the drop it would probably by fine. Just wouldn't look as good :p

I have always liked that wheel style, they are 16 (vs 17 don't have the money right now to be buying wheels/tires/suspension) and they aren't heavy like some 16's I have been finding in my search.
I am guessing if I did run this setup I would want some spacers....no?

Maybe, stock offset is 50. I had a similar setup that you do now with the Rota's 16*7 with 45 offset. Only had to roll the driver's side's side.
How much does the current setup weigh? I'm not a fan of spacers. Your just adding more weight.

Interesting that you had to roll your fender....I have had no rubbing issues. I do forget if you were lowered though.
My current setup is approx 37-38lbs (17-18 for the wheels and 20 for the tires).
The Miata wheels weigh in at 15lbs (from what I have found online) and the tires (Advan A11A - stock on the Miata) are 22lbs.
Initially there will be no difference but when I replace tires I can save a couple more lbs per corner.

Interesting. But if you use spacers that will cut that loss a bit.
What Miata are the rims from? A NC?

True about the weight that is why I am hoping no spacers will be needed. And yes they are the NC 16's.
As a further update, the guy selling them agreed to sell them as we initially agreed and they are in route now! Woot.

Can someone clarify exactly when one would need to use hubcentric/lugcentric rings? I've always been puzzled when this subject is brought up as I never really know why they're needed.

Can someone clarify exactly when one would need to use hubcentric/lugcentric rings? I've always been puzzled when this subject is brought up as I never really know why they're needed.
A lot of aftermarket wheels will be made with a larger-than-normal center hub so they can be installed on a range of different cars. A lot of different makes have different hub bores (Proteges are 67.1 mm, IIRC) but by having a larger hub and then including the proper hibcentric ring, which simulates a smaller hub bore, then the aftermarket wheel will fit on any car assuming it has the appropriate bolt pattern.
SuperProtege5

So are these rings included whenever someone purchases aftermarket wheels if the hub bore is bigger than the car it's going on?
anarchistchiken
08-17-2008, 08:38 PM
From my experience, most wheel sellers dont include the rings with the wheels, but if it's a shop or online store they should be able to get them, just make sure you know what size you need.

I am fairly new to this site but have already been helped by spark plug and flashing air bag light problems. I noticed on another thread that people were suggesting using 215/40/17 tires for Mazda3 17 x 6.5 rims on a P5. Every tire I checked on Tire Rack for 215/40/17 has a 7 inch minimum rim width requirement. For the 17 x 6.5 rim 205/45/17 is suggested. I just bought a set of near perfect 17 x 6.5 rims off a 2006 Mazda3 and after much research was leaning toward the General Exclaim UHP tire. Any thoughts on size or tire? Thanks

Yeah, but I think the RX-8 wheels hit the suspension if you don't use a spacer (I could be wrong). I think their issue is with being a 8" wide wheel with like a +50 mm offset.
