Mazda Motor Corporation will use this year’s Paris Motor Show for the world premiere of its all-new space wagon “Mazda5” (European version). Mazda5 is the company’s fifth new-generation global product, following Mazda6, Mazda2, RX-8 and Mazda3.
Fulfilling the promise of the Mazda MX-Flexa concept revealed at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, the new Mazda5 will put packaging innovation and driving enjoyment into the space wagon segment around the world.
Designed from the inside out, Mazda5 will provide space wagon comfort and a unique “6 + One” packaging concept that provides flexible space in the vehicle’s centre. As such, individual markets will be able to configure the vehicle for up to seven passengers or provide seating for six with additional storage capacity.
In line with Mazda’s Zoom-Zoom promise, Mazda5 will deliver a fresh exterior design with two, wide-opening sliding doors and driving dynamics that customers have come to appreciate from all Mazda new-generation vehicles. Four powertrains will be offered to satisfy diverse global needs—two gasoline engines and, developed specifically for European markets, two versions of a common-rail turbo diesel engines.
Details of the car will be announced during the Mazda press conference scheduled to begin at 11:15 in Hall 1, on Thursday, September 23, 2004

That looks pretty nice to me. Smaller than a full minivan, but still seats up to 7. I'm guessing it's built on the Mazda6 platform?

Let's wait a see guys...don't be so quick to diss...remember this is a family ride 1st and a sporty people carrier 2nd...not the same parameters as the other Mazda models...but I trust it will serve its purpose well and with that "Zoom Zoom" we expect from Mazda. :D

^ yeah, there seem to be a lot of comparisions to the xA. This thing is a minivan. Sliding rear doors and it seats 7. It doesn't look like the xA, prolly won't handle at all like it, and wasn't intended to do either.

built on the 3 chassis actually with the 2.3 as the only american engine choice
wongpres

... and it will only seat 6 in N. American-spec (other markets can be had with 7-seater version).

To me it looks like a more bubbley version of the new Volvo V50 inwhich i bet it shares the same platform with.

I like it, best of all with rising gas prices, V6 on a mini van is brutal for the wallet on gas. Besides the 2.3L engine is a very strong engine that has prooven it's worthyness worlwide. I think Mazda is going to sell a lot of these. This van reminds me of a Nissan Axess we had like 13 years ago. Pretty much the same class except this is new.

The Protege5 was such a hit here!!

looks promising...wonder how much it will cost? If its anywhere near $20K it will be a huge hit!

(hump) According to dealers in the Montréal region, it should be price from $26k to $32K canadian. And still no info about the 6+ONE (confused) for the canadian market!!! (blah)
SpecM3
11-28-2004, 04:23 PM
from 26K.Cnd?. .. that's way up what I was expecting. From 20-22K Cnd would be more reasonable. Something like the price of a 3 sport Gt or sedan GT....

Mazda Canada's website (http://www.mazda.ca) has now added the Mazda5 to it's 'Upcoming Vehicles' section. Mazdaspeed6 info has also been added in Upcoming Vehicles.
Antoine

Just checked out that 'Upcoming Vehicles' section...The 5 looks pretty cool for a people carrier...for those who need a wagon or minivan with style and sport...the 5 looks to be just the ticket (thumb)...it has mod potential...nice subtle body enhancements, rims and suspension...Hmmm :p

looks good...except for those GIANT TAILLIGHTS that should be blacked out, like on the 3 and MS6 and placed lower on the car.
Pretty sweet from the front though

Now don't hate, because i'm probably one of Mazda's biggest fans, my favorite car I've ever owned is still my '86 323 with 260k on it, and that is getting a turbo as we speak, but........... I'd still rather only carry 5 in the Volvo than try to talk 6 into riding in that ugly ass minivan wanna be thing.

I guess you're a lucky one who doesnt have to carry more than 5 ppl... congratulations!
Oh well, i'm in the market for a mini van ... and this little car sound (well, look) perfect to me..But still, I need to see in person before :)
I think ppl here who hate the Mazda5:
1. They do not need a mini van
2. They have enough money to get a real mini van
I guess there's not alot of ppl who are just like me...too poor to get a mini van, but need to carry more than 5 ppl (lol2)

Have you looked at used Honda's? Not the old isuzu made ones but the newer Odyeses? my brother and 3 of me neighbors have them. I was going to get one also, but decided 3 on the street was enough, and we ended up getting a new 4 runner instead.
Ive worked at dealerships, and service centers and been in a lot of minivans, heres my opinion on them
Anything chrysler makes = total piece of crap (they should come with a spare tranny)
Hondas = extremely nice, comfortable as hell, reliable as hell, and good looking too!
Toyota = the older ones, brain fart cant remember their names, styling is a bit bubbly, but one of the neatest ive been in. Love it or hate it styling. their new one....ugly!
nissan = continuing to give all japanese cars a bad name, i do here their new minivan is nice, just ugly, and probably still cheap nissn quality
mazda = mpv was neat, again love it or hate it styling, but the roll up back windows was just plain cool. A bit on the small side though
Ford = went from ugly to uglier, then pretty cool, then ugly again. Fix Or Repair Daily, quality
ok ive ranted long enough. I'm delieresly tired, so im out. peace
misbehave

Mazda thinks there is...
Give the Mazda5 a chance...Add one more character trait to owning anything Honda or Toyota...You'll be just like everyone else ;) Any Mazda product is for people who appreciate life and the things that make life special...The other brands make what you need...Mazda makes what you need...INTERESTING!

and dont forget guys, there is a turbo kit being developed here for the 2.3L, I really like the styling of this van, the interior looks very comfortable and the price is not that brutal.

Just by looking at all the pictures and reading the info, this car uses pretty much the exact same platform as the Mazda3, same brakes, same suspension differently tunes, same everything, with an extended wheel base and different body.
