I email Mazda on when I should replace a fuel filter for a Protege and they told me they don't recomend me replacing it. I find this very odd to not ever have to replace a fuel filter. Is this true?

They say it's not necessary. If you look in your manual, there is nothing that says to replace the fuel filter. Although that is not too say that if you get a bad tank of gas or something you won't need to replace it.

waking this up. My 01 is a dog up higher RPMs. I have 135k on the car. The fuel pump can be accessed by flipping up the back seat. With my Mustang I had to drop the tank. Ive done it twice; once by myself. How bad can it be? Im gonna take a dry run this weekend and price the parts at the dealer

It was a bit of a pain at first. I had a buddy helping me and we had to figure it out as we went. I just transfered the stock fuel pump over. We changed the sock and the housing from the factory 137k one that was on there. It runs so much better! I can chirp second gear now without trying. Where it used to feel dead it just keeps accelerating. For any high mileage stock cars I recomend do it. I used a Bosch sock and a beck and arnley housing. Well worth the time wrestling with it. Cost about $55. If you dont need to do the pump (stock motor NA) why bother?

AFAIK there is no fuel filter, only the in tank sock.
