Mazda Canada is taking a HUGE risk in bringing the Mazda5 to Canada (in many ways, a bigger risk than the Pro5 - which obviously turned out to be a tremendous success). The Mazda5 is a mini-minivan by N. American standards. In Europe, Oceania, and Asia, this type of vehicle is very popular - in fact, the Mazda5 is the replacement for the Mazda Premacy (which never came to N. America).

Having said that, I understand why Mazda Canada is taking this risk - N. American minivans are going bigger and bigger and the MPV is no match (nor would it make business sense for Mazda to go bigger). Even though the Mazda5 is not a direct MPV replacement in all markets (as I said, it's a Premacy replacement), Mazda may have decided to go another route and focus on going smaller while others go larger. I know for a fact that both the Premacy and MPV will be stopped in the UK when the Mazda5 is released (so it'll be interesting to see what happens to the MPV in N. America).

It will also be VERY interesting to see if MazdaUSA brings in the Mazda5 - when asked about the MX-Flexa (the concept of the Mazda5), the president of MNAO said that any vehicle that fits the Canadian market would probably fit US as well.

One final thing, the Mazda5 is based on the Mazda3 platform (with an extended wheelbase). The Mazda3 2.0l engine is already confirmed for the Mazda5 in Europe. As such, I'm sure the Mazda3 & 6 2.3l will definitely be one of the engine choices in N. America, but will it be powerful enough for N. Americans?

You have to know (fellow americans) that the Canadian market is very different from the American. Up here small cars sell like crazy like toyota echos, they're every where. We have a big part of the urban population living in or near the downtown areas so smaller cars like I said before sell very well. I think that for the Canadian market habing the 5 and the MPV is a very calculated risk.

I drove that minivan (in the picture) in California a few weeks ago on vacation. We rented it at one of the car places... at least it looked exactly like that. Almost a Mazda3 looking front end, altezza-style rear tail lights, a V6 with a 5-speed automatic. Had upholstery kinda like the last generation Honda Prelude. Anyway, it wasn't bad for a minivan... I'd consider getting one if I was in the minivan market. It handled good, we found the dual sliding doors real convenient, as well as the 3rd row seating. Lots of little cubby holes for stuff.

I thought it said MPV... maybe the one in the picture just reminds me of it. or california rental places get 'em early?

It looks like a Toyota with a Mazda badge, YUCK! I much prefer the MPV, looks better than all the other minivans and has the best powertrain over all other minivans.

...and our taxes and gas prices are higher... but there's nothing wrong with driving a smaller car, its actually better.
I think ONE of the reasons n.americans drive bigger cars is because they're larger/more overweight than people in other countries.

man i don't understand your tastes. i think the mazda 5 looks sweet! its a very forward futuristic design with sleek lines almost shaped like a bullet, i would probably choose that over my protege 5 if I had a family to haul around.

the current MPV looks pimp, it even comes stock with smoked altezzas Hell yeah if I ever make the mistake...(WHOOPS!) I mean luck enough to get married and have kids this would be #1 over the dodge carvans... If they gave it the V8 with vvt vilm technology, User leveling Hid's from the 3 and 8, took the RX-8 rims or the 6S rims and put them on there it would be stock pimp and beat the magnum in sales. LOL even tho it was a joke speed version would prabably bring chrysler back into turboing minivans! http://www.turbominivan.com as for price of the vehicle...remember how much people spend on H2's navagator and denalis. For the record the mazda 5 isn't the ugliest....nor the quest.....look at dodge's new inline 5 sprinter (yes)

2 3 4 5 6 7 8 and 9 are already being used. They shoud have carried the Atenza/Axela names over but oh well we still bought our cars so they did something right.

When I was 22 I was in a band. We traveled alot so I bought a 1990 MPV, 7 pass, 5 speed. It was great for carrying the boys and had a trailer with the gear. Took that thing to hell and back and it never failed me once. ALso, talk about going under the radar, cops never looked twice at this innocent little mini van. MPV = Mobile Party Vehicle. So it's a little bigger than say a Focus wagon but smaller than the MPV. Talk about your niche market! It'll probably go Aztec on em, 2 years and gone. :)

The styling takes time to get used to, but at least it's not another box on wheels! Thanks Mazda for not jumping on the xB/element bandwagon.

Personally i like it. Saw a pic in automobile magazine and i like the lines and all plus you get to sit another person compare to a regular car. Mazda brought in the P5 on times where no one dare to put out one (except the luxury ones) and it made a great HIT. Being a practical person myself whos driven most mazda that has four door or more ranging from jdm to US spec, i think if mazda properly handles the niche on this class would be a good seller like the P5...It may not handle as a speed but knwing mazda they like going crazy with the idea of tuning even the van.

Hello, have you not all seen the trend Mazda is in now

The Mazda 5 is just the next MPV, as the Mazda 3 was the next Protege, and the Mazda 6 is the 626

they like simply giving there cars single digit number's, it must be simple for them or they're dislecsic

Mazdz 3 is the most sold vehicle in Quebec Canada

The Mazda 6, Im sory, but it looks like shit, I much prefer the 2002 to curent model. The car looks like a toy or something (there is serious uglyness aound the front end) and the current odessey from Honda has that same ugly look.

If I were in the market (and Im not) I like the styling of the 2000 odessey & the 2002 MPV

"in a MPV you know, relaxing

They stole some ideas, but the Spectra5 is UGLY compared to the P5.

theres no comparison

it's like comparing shit to a rose (and I dont care if they come with a few more ponies, a few mods fixes that up quick)

as for the Mazda 6, Im not impressed.

Its funny, but Dodge, is the only company I see out there with intentions to dominate the market for each vehicle they put in. For instance the SRT 4, I hate neons, but that bitch is Bad ASS, there goal was to kill imports in track times, and they won hands down, a few upgrades and shes a serious beast, and theres the SRT 10, the Magnum, Derango with thhe hemispheric engine (oh yeah, to break down a Hemi for all you who dont know, its weird how not too many people even know, but everybody loves a Hemi. Its a hemispheric valve couver (large couver with alot of internal space) that centers the plugs [instead of angleling them like most V engines] and creates a gas and air mixture to be created within the valve cover as a hemisphere, then sucked into the chambers) It takes alot of gas, but the set up delivers TORK, like a MF.

and Toyota came out with the Corola thats got 170 hp, but Im pissed at Toyota for discontinuing the Supra, they need a replacement in my book>

Hondas accord looks like a fucking beaver, and there cars look shit since 2002 ( ecept the civic Si hatch, thats there exeption)

So I hope they dont close the thread for all my jiberish

my final thought, Im happy to see the Domestics back in the battle

(even though the domesticks own alot of the import makers)

ford owns mazda and others for example

Good work Dodge, & Mopar

all this shit creates a competing market, and thats good for all of us!

The Mazda5 is not a MPV replacement - it is the Mazda Premacy replacement. The difference (to N. America anyways) is that the Premacy was never offered in the N. American market. This is why the Mazda5 is new uncharted territory in N. America - Mazda knows this and is thus planning for quite low sales volumes in N. America (though proportionately higher in Canada than the US). But, if it becomes a hit like the Pro5 then Mazda will look absolutely genius.

The situation with the Mazda5 in other markets is a little different as it will replace BOTH the Mazda Premacy and the MPV in Europe (where the MPV is too big of a vehicle). In Japan, the Mazda5 (which will officially be named the Mazda Premacy) will directly replace the current Premacy and the MPV remains.
