I heard that on new some new cars, the factory stereo has to remain connected in order for the airbags to function. It isn't just a rumour, because a guy I know had to get the pros to install the new stereo and "hide" the factory stereo in the trunk and keep it connected. Anyways, does this problem affect the 2004 3?? If you know please reply quickly, I am about to install my stereo.

Off topic:
I don't believe the air bag one, but some are connected to the security system and have to be installed into the trunk. I think the New Impala is one.
That steroe looks nice. Are you still running the stock speakers?

The newer GM vehicles do have some serious issues regarding the airbags if you replace the stock radio. They use a class2 data bus to link to the airbags, some factory alarms, to the ECM. This data bus IS passed through the radio. If you remove the radio with out the correct parts you will definatly lose the door chime and the radio delay function, you also can break the databus link disabling the airbags, and lose the ability to adjust the settings of the factory alarm.
-- GM does this, because it is cheaper for them to use a data bus and a BMC (body control module) to control the vehicle electronics, rather than using many different smaller computers.
Thae Mazda3 does not have any data systems that communicate through the radio.

here's the pic of it installed, the led is next to the deck and the actual swix unit is behind where the pocket used to be.

Where did you get the COLORED panel strip thing?
did you make it? I like that is covers the LCD display area.

Nothing against what you have done but I think that the metra kit is so ugly and it looks to out of place. Unless you are willing to get some fiberglass done then that is your only choice. HU looks great. I never had anything made by clarion but I have been told that they make a quality product when it come to HU's. I myself have gone with Alpine and I used to own a Pioneer. I would not reccomend Pioneer. I had too many problems with the deck that I had. For the money that I spent on it, there should have been no problems.

actually most gm cars lose nothing but door chimes when u remove the battery, the airbag thing is bogus.
another thing, just because some shop says you have to keep the stock radio in doesnt nessicarily make it true. most shops even now claim u need a 90$ harness and to pay to relocate the stock radio in j-bodies wich is completly false. just because some guy works at a shop doesnt nessicarily make him right about everything, check into it and do your own homework to find out the real truth.

Nothing against what you have done but I think that the metra kit is so ugly and it looks to out of place.I second that. The texture just isn't right...but I don't blame Metra, I blame Mazda for thinking that people would be satisfied with a stock stereo system that is integrated into the dash.
I never had anything made by clarion but I have been told that they make a quality product when it come to HU's.They sound great, the interface (buttons, display, menus, etc) is the best I've used, but they don't seem to last. I owned one that went through two installs until the laser got out of whack and the half the display stopped working. It was about 4 years old before I tossed it. Then I bought another because I liked the first so much. That one is about 6 years old now and the backlight for the display is broken and the preset buttons don't always work...and laser is also getting out of whack because the last track on many cds skips. I don't know, maybe 5-6 years is a long time for a car cd player.

99% of people that buy an MZ3 WILL be fully satisfied with the stock setup...Not like they're really going to take the aftermarket into account.

Mazda should make a kit...then they could profit from the aftermarket and it would match.

but then people would put in an aftermarket headunit and when it broke they'd go get an aftermarket headunit to replace it. if mazda makes it so another headunit cannot be put in it the owner will be forced to go to mazda and pay for a new unit when the warantee is up. because the truth is that 90% of the people won't upgrade the car, and allot of those people will go pay the dealer to fix their headunit...

looks good, are you planning to put a tv in the lower section
what i would have done is put the tv on the top and the radio on the bottom section
one more thing: can you still use the steering wheel volume and modes to work the radio?

What if you only consider automobiles sold directly to consumers?
