View Full Version : New Brakes needed, suggestions

Hi I am sure this thread has likely happened before, but I am new here.
I have an 02 Protege 5 and I am due for some new brakes but I must say I am impressed that the stock have lasted to 83.5K
I would like to go a little higher end and am considering Power Slot Rotors, not too sure for the pads. So I am hoping for a little advice.
Also a note for you all as this may affect your suggestions, I am in Nova Scotia Canada, this means we get all different weather, lots of rain, some heat in the summer and plenty of snow in the winter, I drive 150 - 200 highway km's per day.
I would also like to start doing some autoxing

On my MR2-T I run EBC vented/slotted/dimpled discs front and back, with goodridge steel lines, metal matrix pads, and Castrol GTX brake fluid. The car stops great, but its a weekend barnstorming autox car, so it doesn't see a lot of street miles.
With the amount of miles you drive I would consider goodridge or similar steel braided brake lines, some good hi-temp braking fluid (like Castrol GTX or Motul). But I think you would be spending your mula foolishly on agressive pads and fancy rotors, they will wear out much quicker than OEM. Plus the constant black dust on your wheels will probably drive you nuts.

Spend the $ on a nice set of pads, do a few searches on the formus to see what folks like. Just resurface your rotors unless they're too thin. take them to an auto parts store, most of them will do it for like $6 each, and they'll tell you if they're too thin. I like the concept of ss lines but I've heard a few horror stories of the ss braid actually poking through the line and causing a leak, so tread careflly. I have no first-hand experience with them, just hearsay.
Definitely flush the whole system with nice quality fluid.

I use the powerslot rotors and OEM pads for street driving and find them to be a good combination

I put Axxis Ultimate pads on my P5 and the wear indicator wore a groove into my rotor in the first 100 miles. (uhm) I ended up getting OEM pads and they bite just as well, and without as much dust as the Axxis.
OEM is the best for brake pads, IMHO. :)

talk to andi at www.cobaltfriction.com and ask him about their aggressive street pads. generally, the more aggressive pads can dust and squeal more, but it's all worth the big f'ing grin on your face the first time you get on the brakes and stop 20ft shorter than oem pads.
slotted and drilled rotors are mostly for show and are not worthwhile on a street car. in fact, they are generally more prone to cracking than solid rotors. check out www.stoptech.com for more information on rotors.

theres a groupbuy going on for 4 brembo slotted and chamffered crossdrilled rotors for $200. they replace stock rotors, no additional mods needed. id just get oem brake pads and those rotors and ud either stop on a dime with ABS or lock your brakes up a lot without ABS. lol (lol2)
