View Full Version : Kartboy Shifter Bushing install problem

Folks,

Wasn't sure which sub-forum to put this in...

I installed my Kartboy bushings today, but ran into a potentially serious snag. I stripped the nut when I was trying to install these a coupld of months ago so I picked up another nut from the dealer and bought some "easy outs" to get the nut off.

Well... when I was installing today, I thought I had finally broken the nut loose. What I actually did was break loose the stud from the tranny. On closer inspection, the nut/stud/washer area had corroded so bad it was almost like the nut was welded to the stud.

Finally got the nut and stud divorced so I screwed the stud back into the tranny and finished the install (also put in some Corksport bornzeoil bushings in up front while I was under there) and everything seems to be working fine.

Has this happened to anybody else when installing the Kartboy bushings? Also, does anybody know how much to torque the stud in or whether to use red locktite?

Thanks for the input and reading this long post.

I can't tell you how much torque the stud in question requires because that spec is not listed in the FSM. However, the nut that goes on the stud carrying the Kartboy bushings should be torqued to 28-38 ft/lbs (38-51 N/m). Therefore, I would assume that the torque setting for the stud should be somewhat more than that so that the stud doesn't back out when removing the nut.I think Locktite would be a good idea on the stud but I don't know if red or blue would be better in this case. I'm guessing that if you don't over-torque the nut, blue would be sufficient to keep the stud in place.

Yes, I had the same problem. Don't know the torque specs, but I went just south of Pretty Damned Tight. I didn't crank on it, but it was quite tight.

6 months later, no problems. I checked it the other day when I was changing my oil.

Yea... we had no problems either with mine. How many miles do you have on the car? I'm surprised it was corroded like that?

Don't know if you meant me, but since I had the same problem....

I had about 16,000 miles. All North Shore of Boston, though. Crappy winters.

It's not that it was really corroded, but just frozen on with salt residue and other gunk from the winter.

In trying to undue the nut, I undid the stud. I just took the stud out, with the nut on, separated them with vice grips and a socket and put the stud back in.

No biggie.

It's a little over a year old (1 year July 25th) and I just rolled over 29,000 over the weekend.

I guess I'm not too surprised that it's so corroded. It was garaged in Montana as soon as the snow flew, but once I graduated college and went to Denver in January, I had to drive it and Denver loves to lay down that mag chloride. Thinking that and the gravel/salt mix probably has something to do with it.

Thinking about replacing the stud too while I'm at it.
