When I hit 4200 RPM or there abouts, I hear a whistling noise...What is it? Is it normal or are my pipes or something coming loose.

tighten ure supercharger belt lol just picking. if u got a cold air kit its just the turbo sucking in more air and u can here it.

Huh? wait a second.....we have a warranty? You mean to say that the mark-ass service department bitches at Mazda will actually fix my car rather than say "unable to reproduce problem at this time" or "you abused your car....too bad"???

Mine does it too. But there's two of them, one is the turbo spooling that i know of, but the second is more like a constant faint squeaking comes in at about 4k rpms at any throttle posistion and is pretty constant. Even if I rev the car while in Nuetral and hold the throttle at 4k it'll make the same squeaking but i can't seem to locate it... Any ideas???

main noise is just the turbo taking in air...the secondary noise may well be a leak...mine leaked and sounded like a high pitched hiss...

mines definately not a hiss. its loud, like a squeeek.

i think its normal, im not sure though. its my first turbo car. I heard it on the dyno too and they didnt say it was bad. they said it was the turbo spooling (i can hear it spooling, its much more faint but maybe its louder when the gate opens or somethin, or when that vics or whatever happends cause theres more air goin in?)

i dont think its bad, im not worried. i was just mentioning i have it as well.

The loud sound is the intake sucking in air but the whistle you hear around 4000 RPM and more is the turbo spinning. When youre gradually uping the RPM more air are going thru the exhaust so the turbo spin faster and faster thats why youre hearing that whistle around 4000 RPM 'cause thats is where the turbo is starting to spin DAMN FAST (rockon) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So dont worry everything is fine, in fact I found that sound pretty sweet when youre window is open :) !!!

yea lately my windows been open and i noticed it more. excellent. you should hear it on a dyno with the hood open lol

it's the turbo spooling up, I love the sound of it, I love driving past people with their windows open and my turbo screamin!

hey,

on my 2003 it sounded normal at first then after approx 4k miles the next day after it was really really cold one night the sound changed.

you could hear it spool, but it sounded more like a siren as it spooled up.

i took it to the first dealer, who tried to bs with me and told me how it pulls even harder than the other mazdaspeeds when they were driving it.

i drove the car another 4 months and got fed up with the noise. i took it to another dealer (luckilly no mods yet) and asked them for a new one.

they said something was wrong with the turbo and replaced it with a brand new one (tubo, that is).

anyways, you may want to take it in and check it out as it could lead to more serious problems in the future.

just fyi

mine makes that screeching noise right around 4000, mainly in first and second gear. I cant really here it when Im boosting at that point but if im not its very loud. Scares me.

Mine screeches like this too, has since day one. There have been many threads on this if you go back and look. I'm not aware of anyone linking the screech to any mechanical problem. I've been screeching for 12,000 trouble free miles and I drive the car fairly hard. It appears to be common to pretty much all of the MSP's.

Mine whistled at about 5grand+ (i think) and that was before i put my cai on. now its SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAMS from 4k to 6.5k.. and it makes me feel good. :D

just to let ya'll MSP guys know you'll aren't the only one who experience that noise. In the other forum its been covered plenty of times. The other model proteges get the same whinning/whistling type noise. Like with mines I normally hear it while I'm driving on the highway doing 65 - 85mph, 3500rpm - 4500rpm. Only when I press my foot on the gas I hear it. Other protege members have expierence the samething, So basically its normal. But if not.....Mazda fudged up ALOT of cars.

so true but I'm on good terms with my Service/Parts guys here. I pick my battles and a blown turbo is a worthy cause :)

sure a whistle is okay, but if it's really load it's possible your shaft isn't true anymore.. my cuz's turbo screams at any speed, rpms over 4000, took it in and found it wasn't balanced anymore. Sure it'll last a few thousand miles before exploding, but there's no guarantee how long it'll last. Does your car scream? It's your turbo asking to die. I totally expect mazda to screw up alot of cars, it's within their power.

no its not a whistle for mine, it screams. im gonna take it in tommorow am. ill post what i find out.

yea i'm gonna have my dealership take off my turbo and check for shaft play. when they get my new brake pedal in that is...

rocketspeed
07-29-2004, 08:29 PM
This is a really common issue. If it is shaft play, everyone has it and everyone's will blow up. Like I said, mine's been going 12,000 miles screeching all the way.

I've been hearing the same noise since day one... actually I really notices it when I installed a CAI.

I also have another noise at 3500-3800rpm. It's a leak in the exhaust line... I have a cat-less pipe and the joint between it and the rest of the exhaust (the rest of the pipe going to the muffler) is moving a bit (probably will be solved by getting a AWR front motor mount)... this is a small noise and you can't really hear it at WOT...

Isnt it just the sound from the turbo when it gets up to speed?

Yep and its perfectly normal.

But if your paranoid about it and your under warranty take it in. Wont hurt right? You may get a new turbo just like some have on this board.

Mine got real loud one day. Making a schreeching noise. Took it in to the dealership turns out it was the oil starvation issue.

Ryoga28
05-06-2005, 06:28 PM
I've also got two oil spots on the turbo, one next to the ic piping and the other somewhere on the middle of the turbo. They said it was normal and they had documented on my service record in case of future problems.

I have a whistle noise under load and or high rpms. It sounds like its coming from the engine bay while driving, but its coming from my tail pipe. Once in a while I can duplicate the noise in my driveway by stomping the throtle. No one has been able to tell me what it is. Car runs great and the sound isnt all that bad. Ive come to think of it as a free turbo w/o hp increase. The car seems to run fine 30+mpg highway about 21-24mpg city. I dont know if the city mpg is where its supposed to be but im wide open in my five speed everywhere. 2000 1.6 N/A absolutely no engine mods w/whistling tail pipe.If you know whats wrong please tell me. Thanks

probably got a hole in the muffler.
or u're leaking at a flange.

probably just needs a new gasket.
check the axleback portion of your exhaust, where axlwback and catback meet.

I have the same burrr sound that lasts only like a second and I was wondering if you ever found out what it was? I also have a CAI and my thought was it sounded like a small piece of trash, paper or something got sucked onto the CAI filter kinda like when you get a piece of paper stuck in the vaccum cleaner. But as you said, it only lasts a second. Most of the time I let of the throttle when I hear this, thinking that if it was a piece of trash it would fall off but I think once or twice I didnt let off and the noise went away. Just wondering if you or anyone else knew what this was.
