I'm looking at my maintenance schedule for my 2000 Protege ES and it says to replace the spark plugs at 30,000 miles. So I thought that wouldn't be too hard, but after I opened the hood, I didn't get too far.

I see the four rubber caps in front of the engine, but when I pull them off, it doesn't look like there's anything under them. Am I supposed to follow those wires to the other end, on top of the engine??

Also, nowhere in my manual does it show me where the spark plugs are nor how to change them.

Someone please describe where these things are, because I'm obviously clueless.

Thanks in advance!

they should be right on TOP of the engine. 4 rubber caps with wires going through them. when you pull them off, there should be a plastic/rubber extention that comes out with it. look into these holes and you'll find the spark plugs. make sure you have a long enough extension for your ratchet when you take it out. i had a mishap and had to fish one out cause it was too short.

Usually if you don't know what you are doing you should take it to the dealer or a shop and let them take care of it.

Here's some tips though if you want to change your spark plugs.

a) Use a thread anti-sieze compound on the spark plug before installing them

b) Do one plug at a time because you can screw up your engine if you get the plug wires mixed up

c) Do not over tighten the spark plugs!!!! I would highly recommend a torque wrench in this case.
