I just viewed some photos of the 2003, I did not see any rails / or bars for the roof rack, did mazda get rid of the roof system? Although I removed mine - what are they going to put up there to generate more NOISE!

There's 6 2003s at the local dealers and all have rails and racks. Jim

That car has a St Catharines dealer plate thingy. Im from Toronto and St Catherines is near here. My point is Canadian P5 dont have the roof racks, so we cant judge the USA P5 with that photo ;)

I'll just confirm, I took the pics in Canada and they do not have roof racks, US versions do (I need a roof rack so yay!)

The roof rack looks nice for this type of car, but I wish it had been an option on US cars. I will most likely never use it, and could have done without it, but Mazda has made it a bitch to completely take off (rails and all) I'd do it if it were something easily done, and from the outside only.
so canada will not get a roof rack anymore?
canadian ones never had them

Yeah, Canadian P5's don't come standard with one, but you can add it as an option, though it's not the same as the US roof rack.

Are roof racks on cars illegal in the Great White North? I find it a tad strange that a manufacturer would go to the trouble to make the vehicle that much different if there wasn't a law involved. Or is it an import law that makes the rackless P5 cheaper (or more expensive). The Subaru Brat was able to beat truck import laws by having a pair of plastic seats bolted in the bed, thus making it a car instead of a truck. Jim
Roof racks are not illegal in Canada. I have no idea why our p5s dont come with them, but I am happy that they dont.

Does anyone have a picture of the optional canadian roof racks?
Are the 2003 racks the same as the original (and just as noisy)?
I love the rack, and use it every month, but I sure wish it would SHUT UP at freeway speeds, especially on a long drive - Mazda sure "missed the boat" when engineering the one I have.

I have an 03. The racks appear to be the same as the other models.
I Test drove it without the racks. Dealer said they dont put them on because of the wind noise during test drives.
So the next day i put the racks on & drove on the highway.
ya...its noisy. Especially when i hit 80..thats when the whistle starts!! It's also when the music gets turned up, so i hear nothing! .

the US roof rack comes standard but its highly incompatible with most Thule/Yakima accesories, making it virtually useless. In Canada, although the rack is not standard, the one that cam be fitted is Made by Thule and therefore you can use most acessories. You'd think Mazda designers lived in a cave for the past 15 yrs not making a roof rack adaptable to THule/YAkima.

its simple.....if you are wanting to take off the uprights and the cross bars.....just look in your manual...the instructions are in there...
to give you the readers digest version.....look at the rack where it attaches to the rail...there is a HOLE in the plastic piece...there is a screw in the bottom of that hole...remove that screw and the plastic cover comes off of that upright....then it exposes the screws that holds the upright to the rain on the roof....remove the screws and then remove the rack from the roof....
then you take the pieces that came with your car and snap them in place and it covers the hole where the rack was removed....and makes the total rail look smoothe from front to back.

there is a how-to that someone did....hmmmmm but it requires you to do a LOT of work....requires you to guy those pieces which are canadian...but you can get them through a US mazda dealer...just have to order them...its been done.....and you have to remove your entire headliner to do the job too....
let me look around and find the link to the site.....it has pics and all....very good tutorial.

There is no mention of the roof rack in the owners manuals which came with the early US versions of the car - No drawings of the car WITH the rack, let alone any instructions on how to remove it. Not even a "Roof Rack" in the index at the back of the manual.

I got the roof rails for Christmas
Did the entire install in about 2-3 hours by myself (accompanied by an oil change).
The hardest part is getting the headliner out (obviously).
The front a-pillers just pull out (3 snaps and a little tab at the bottom).
The b-pillars require a bit more. The cover on the seat belt just pulls out (it doesn't seem like it will go, but just pull). Then there is a big 10mm(?) nut that holds the belt to the slide, it's easiest to remove these. I ended up removing one, then jimmying out the headliner, but I really didn't want to mess with the seat belts too much.
The c-pillars were like 6 clips, and some pegs. I ended up losing one of the metal clips, so be careful when you pull it out.
Other than that, the two sunvisors (3 screws total), the map lights (pull out), the dome light (2 screws), and all the Oh $ht handles (two screws each).
There are also three of those plastic retainer clips along the back edge of the headliner.
Pull all these out, there are 4 bolts (I think the website says 5) pull on the roof rails, and it just pops out.

YEP....sure enough.....and if the post would have stated...
"I went all through my manual...and its not in there anywhere....can someone help"...
the original post would have been different...
its a fact that the MAJORITY of all drivers RARELY EVER look at their manuals for ANYTHING.....they somewhat forget that they are even in the glove box, and many don't have a clue as to what sort of information is in there........

For those that wanted to see the CDN roof rack. There 4 plastic covers on roof. Just pop those off and these just bolt right on. On and off in about 5 minutes.

I like mine just fine. I thnk the dealer charged me $300.00 or so. They aren't wide enough for a canoe, but I just jimmy-ied up my old thule bars and top of the mazda ones and they work fine. For just bikes they work great. Of course, they're loud with the sunroof open, but otherwise not a big deal. I only put mine on when I need them.

That's the first time I've ever gotten a Canadian to take those pictures, and I wanted to say thank you.
Now, ... if possible, could you take a picture of the "nut" end of the roof rack? i.e. remove the 4 small pieces, and take a picture of what's underneath them?
The american version (obviously) doesn't have ANYTHING under the four holes, and I wanted to see what all else I'm going to need.

Roof rack "nut" cover:
Humvee

roof rack "nut". Actually, the bolt screws in, then the plastic thing follows the screw down and tightens it down. (that made no sense, but if you saw it, you'd understand) no tools required.

I believe they were about $300 canadian. They are huge and fit any Thule or Yakima box/ski rack. Only complaint is the noise with the sunroof open, above 40 mph it is almost deafening!

Roof rack was extrememly easy to take off, only about 5 minutes and from the outside. And they do create a good amount of window noise, kinda of a negative result of placing a rail right over the sunroof. Notice on some other cars that the front rail is set little back from the sunroof.

I know it's been a while since you guys posted your quotes but at least I have an answer to your question. It's not in the manual like you said. However, when you purchased a US Model P5, you were supposed to receive a copy of the "Roof Rack Manual." It's separate from the Owner's manual that's why you can find it in there. And regarding 2003.5 models, eventhough the salesmen refuse to state "2003.5," the roof rack is now a stand-alone accessory. The P5 comes without the roof rack, but it can be requested. The salesman said that there's no price difference, but the Mazdausa.com site states that it's about $225 I believe to get the Roof Rack now. They need to educate their own people within their company to know what their selling because it's pathetic how much they know of their products. Anyway, if you want the roof rack, it now comes with a rubber piece wit jagged edges in front of the front crossbar to reduce wind noise. From what I heard, it's a huge difference.

They just switched over to the 2003.5 as you put it. I got alot of info about it from my sales rep. Because everyone complained about the roof rack making too much noise, all 2003.5s still come with it, but the cross beams are not installed by default. The dealer will put them on for you if you ask, but only if you agree not to complain about the wind noise if you are chosen for The JD Pwr Assoc. survey.
Furthermore, 2004 will NOT have the roof rack option at all. The roof rack is the only reason why the car isn't getting a perfect score from JD Pwr so they are giving it the axe...thanks to all the people who didn't listen to their dealer and complained about it anyway.
A roof rack causes wind noise...its a fact. Anyone who skis knows this. There is no way around it. The roof rack on a $40K Tahoe has the same problem. Get used to it or take it off.

Just picked up my P5 from the dealership on Monday. The deal w/the roof rack is that they are now all coming in w/o them. Before, you either got a roof rack or a subwoofer standard. If you got the rack, the subwoofer was $250 to add, if you got the sub, the rack was $250 to add. Now, they are all coming in with the sub only.

How does that sub sound btw? I want to add bass to my car but I'm not sure I want to go all out just yet. I've got equipment but most of it won't fit w/o taking up a lot of space.

I don't have it in mine, but when I went in to pick it up, they had cleaned up one with a sub in it by accident. I got in it and gave it a listen....made me want to add it before I drove off (I didn't though). The thing is round and sits in the inside of the spare in under the spare cover. Pretty good place for it.
