well i always loved this car, still do. traded in this afternoon on an 04 Jetta GLI 1.8t. Im very very pleased with the new car. i got 13,900 for my 03 spicy msp with 17k on the odo. I think i got a little more cuz the VW dealer i went to also sells mazda. North Penn VW/Mazda in North Wales PA, they are awsome and if u are in the area havin service issues with yer msp take it there, they should take care of u. Anway ill post pics of my new car soon if u guys wanna see it. It has a 207 BHP turbo engine, 18 inch BBS wheels, Large brakes, ESP, SUNROOF!! and also sports Recaro Seats. Its pretty sweet. I paid 26,500 out the door for the VW. My insurance is less too cuz its a "safer" car. Anyway just makin my announcement. Ill be back periodically to check up on u guys. Take it easy.

well it came stock with 18's rising on goodyear eagle f1;s. It also has bilstein suspension, and when ur sitting in those recaro seats it feels even tighter then the msp. But very comprible. the VW just feels more solid.

I just took the "tour" of the GLI on VW.com - (boom01) Looks VERY nice! Congrats! I've been thinking of getting a VW since my warrenty will be up in no time (~25k mile in 9 months) but i've always stayed away from VW since I always seem to -hear- how much trouble they have faulty electrical systems(?) What kind of milage are you supposed to be getting on it btw?

Congrats, enjoy, and send over some pics! =)

Good luck with it. I went from a 2003 Tornado Red GTI to a 03.5 MSP because of all the shit I had to go thru with warranty issues. Make sure your service department has a good reputation. Plus, careful with mods like apr or revo. If you redline it, the dealership will know about it.

only thing i like better on that jetta are the seats and the 6 speed. oh and the MOONROOF (wink) . that body kit just looks weird to me. plus that thing is 10k more than i spent on my msp. but if you like it thats all that matters!

all lower model vws WILL ABSOLUTELY FUCKIN DESINTEGRATE. worst cars ever when it comes to maintenance, eletrical systems, warranty.... The 1.8T engine is a fuckin awesome platform but dont be looking to run any msps in tha twisties -=D

Btw-- the reason they advertise the door hinges prob has to do with the fact that in a year or so youll be pullin door panels off every week to fuck with the electrical system so youll get to know them real well -=D

yeah i beat a revo'd GTi (says he missed 3rd, almost wanted to fight me after i won), and i beat a jetta 1.8t (180hp one) around my town, before any mods except intake. anyway i think the jetta he bought is the factory tuned one, there were one or two down here at gunther VW and they were sellin em pretty expensive, but they're chipped with minor work and like wheels body work and some interior pieces, all under warranty (of that's what you call VW's sorry excuse for a warranty).

GLi is just a plain 1.8t with a 6speed, bodykit, heavy bling wheels and recaros for 26+k. Jettas don't even have a independent suspension in the rear.

I'd take the Legacy GTover it in a heart beat.

thank god i did not guy a GTI, i was on my way to the VW dealer to look at them but my mom was reading the car sales ad in the post and Mazda at the time was giving out incentives for the MSP and i heard turbo as one of the many features they listed and i made a u-turn towards the Mazda dealer, and thats when i ended up with my pride and joy with NO regrets whatsoever

i test drove and NEEEAARLY bought a black vw gti 1.8t with black leather and very nice 17" wheels. Man it was a great car and itd be pretty stout in the quarter. I chose the orange msp and i regretted it off and on for some time until my gf's beetle literally began falling apart after 2 yrs and my ex gf's 02 1.8t jetta goes into the shop every afternoon... we may all complain about msps problems but these would be the tip of the iceberg if we were all rollin in vdubs.

VW might look nice but they are known to fall apart. My friend is a vw service tech. Electrical problems are very common. You see every other vw with its rear tail lights out, its not the bulb but the relays go bad.

As a tech. for both Mazda and VW ( have more VW training than Mazda) I will be the first to say you will never have a mechanical problem with your VW....Except for wheel bearings, rear brakes every 20k, and maybe a couple of burnt clutches. However Electrical problems........all I can say is I will NEVER be out of a job being the shops VW Electrical specialist. As a side note I have driven the GLI and I LOVE the seats.

side note- A GLI was at the track last week and ran a best of like 15.8.......

I rememberd having tons of problems with my tranny. The 2nd gear started grinding at 3000 miles and was rebuilt by the dealership (sovereign volkswagen in NY) and then it started having problems again @ about 6000 miles. Again it was rebuilt with a lot of begging under warranty. Then just after 12 miles with the second tranny, it wouldn't go into reverse half the time and sometimes 2nd. I knew the shift linkage needed to be adjusted, but I didn't want them to have a reason to void my warranty. So I took it back and was told by the Service advisor (saw him talking to the SM) that my warranty was voided and they wanted to charge me to fix it.

TO make the long story short I got rid of my GTI a week later for a MSP and haven' had any transmission problems as of yet (6K). Get this...After two months VWOA called me and told me that my warranty was intact. The SM also give me an angry call about my letter of compliant of a seperate issue and he denied ever knowing about my visit...

Besides the vague feel of the tranny and the numerous rattles, I felt the service departments are usually very shady and I was sick of it.

But Mazda is not that much different regarding shady service departments.

I say nice car. I would've kept the MSP, but the Jetta is still a nice car, with a bit more power, and one easy mod that'll bump the power even more. and maybe his 207hp is with the chip????

lasermp5
07-16-2004, 10:45 PM
207 bhp comes from 180 + "the chip" used for 1.8t engines... costs like 400 but gets you right in 200 range...

My borther drive VW pure baller status. You get soem luxury and cool designs on VW bottom line car. Those crazy germans make everything so cute and cool.

ONly one problem...you will absolutely hate working on it. Germen cars especially audi/VW are a pain to work on. Things are located in weird places. They use torx screws instead of regular phillip or flat head screws. The oil filter is located in the worst place possible...in the bumper on the 2.0L GL models. K04E turbos are dinky and come in cereal boxes and IC are pancakes.

But the engine is good...a hell lot better then the MSP because its an FI engine. You'll love it! I always feel cool and german when driving my brother's golf.

BlkZoomZoom

lol 2.0 gulfs oil filters are in the easiest locations....try a 1.8t passat automatic.

spacemonkey
07-16-2004, 11:04 PM
wha...you mean in the freaking bumper? I never find enough room to get the tool on and twist. I guess it is easy if you have a cup...still kinda tight and crap. PLus I hate that little flap that they put in on the front bumper under tray...ghey.

BlkZoomZoom
07-16-2004, 11:18 PM
the older gulfs tray is held on by 4 screws.....'03 and up is held in by 18 screws......the passat you need to remove the intake tube, coolant res. and underbelly shield to do an oil change and you will make a mess no matter what lol.

spacemonkey

I remember oil getting everywhere and over lines...sucked. lol german enginuity...looks cool. Like when I 1st looked under the hood of an turbo S4...I was like wheres your engine? He must have took off like a billion plastic pieces that made it look nice to get to the turbo. I heard the new V8 S4s timming chains are right next to the firewall...that must be fun...like chaning out fan belts and etc. I say cut the crap Audi/VW...we dont need flower vases in those cars (beatle) and cut plastic stuff everywhere...lol...j/k

Remember the cool non functioning cup holders in the 03 golfs? The one where when they pop up you cant use the radio? It was really cool but it took them like years to finally ditch it and put it in a place that actually works.

i believe they come with k03 turbos stock in the 1.8 and k04 is the upgrade? and the fastest street times are 13s with the upgrade? There are MSPs that run mid to low 13s with the stock turbo still.

spacemonkey
07-17-2004, 10:17 AM
yeah whatever it is its a small turbo....thats why cars like audi TTs run like 20 psi and still get okay times. I guess It is a 1.8L so its not gonna get a big turbo stock. Turbo upgrade would def be sonthing I would look into. The weight of the car doesnt really help either. I recon a T25R or T28rs would be a very nice size for that car. My friend has a stage 2 on his car...I dont know what that includes but its fucking fast. Another thing that annoys me are the window regulators.
