Are there any mufflers that have a 3" inlet that look some-what good or near to stock and don't sound too loud?? I checked apexer1's website. By the way i'm gettin a custom 3"cat-back....if that helps. I already searched and looked at the thread about exuhasts, but i need a muffler! (boom03)
I have found a magnaflow muffler, w/ a 3"inlet. which is alright. My friend has it on his car and its pretty loud.

Jump on ebay, you can find some good ones there. Be careful though, there are also some ricey ones. I was lucky to get a nice deep one, but its 2.5" inlet.

i have a ractive 3in. inlet and no cats on an idle it relativly quiet and around town its noticable but it does not have that raspyness i dred like the honda's this muffler is more of a deeper tone than anything and if i ever put in a silencer in the mid-pie which i doubt i sure it would tone down some more but i just love how deep it sounds especially in parking garages or undernieth bridges you can hear the turbo spinning at idle which i love to hear

i got mine for $217 shipped from www.wholesalehyperformance.com (http://www.wholesalehyperformance.com). but they were having a sale at the time. you should be able to get the 3" inlet turbo version for ~$250 shipped. any more than that and you're paying too much.
i would be careful about ordering from wholesalehyperformance though. my and another msper's order for the turbo version got messed up. they sent the NA version, which is 2.5" inlet. they fixed my order right away. the other person, they took forever to get him squared away. so it's your choice on that one. i was considering ordering from www.finalstageauto.com (http://www.finalstageauto.com). search around and you should be able to find a good price on one.
and if you haven't heard it already, vids of my exhaust are in the exhaust thread....run a search for "aftermarket exhausts".

Is it possible to modify a muffler that has a 2.5" inlet to a 3" inlet???

it wouldn't hurt to look around for the 5zigen...you may find it on sale somewhere. you never know. that reminds me, check out www.groupbuycenter.com (http://www.groupbuycenter.com/). sometimes they have really good deals on stuff.
you might be able to modify the inlet that much. i dunno how big the machine can enlarge the piping. if you could, i'd try to find a 3" inlet/outlet muffler and find a nice tip...i'm pretty sure magnaflow makes one.
here are the dimensions of the stock catback piping.

EDIT: i did a little searching. www.hopupracing.com (http://www.hopupracing.com/) has the fireball for $219+~$35 for shipping. if you want to take a chance, wholesalehyperformance has it for $224+$25 for shipping. google also had a link to my profile here on the mazda forums (boom07)

magnaflow all the way, let me see if i can find some pics, looks almost like stock, and not to loud, and it was only $200, 3" in and out with a straightthrough design. the other alternative you have is to keep the stock exhaust and put in a cutout when you go racing...

i would not recommend this at all, you will not like the results from doing this...
