View Full Version : Initial D style run tonite in a STi, Mazdaspeed pro and a WRX

<!--StartFragment -->
I went to a local car meet today. Majority of the cars where WRX/STis.
Anyways while we were waiting for out tables to be ready at the restourant a few of us decieded to do a initial d style driving on a back road with no cars. Its about a mile and a half stretch of roads with nothing but curves.
There was 3 of us that went on the road. It was an STi in the lead, me (protege) and a WRX in the rear.
It was a awesome road, alot of sharp coners. I was completely looking forward to the STi handing me my ass. Thought i'd fair well with the WRX.
We did total of 2 runs, one going up and another going down. The whole time i was right on the STi's rear, he could not shake me at all. Farthest he got was about a car lenth at up hills but thats about it. I was just taking the entry faster then the STi was. Was able to right behind him.
As for the WRX, it couldn't keep up. We totally left the WRX behind. I was really surprised that my car was able to dust it so badly. The driver of the WRX wanted me to come down to his neighborhood to run him. I've never driven on this road either before so i mean he can't say its because he didn't know the road.
Anyways I'm acutally quite surprised by the outcome of the run. My car lacks half the power of an STi but able to stick on its butt on a twisty road. As for the WRX, i'm kinda disappointed. I thought a WRX would give a better run.
Non of this is scientific, could be the driver also but the WRX and the protege litterary left the WRX in the dust.

Maybe next time. I was in the Sti and it was awesome. :) He tried to get into a 4 wheel drift, but didn't quite succeed. If he allows, maybe next time I can bring Shawn's camera and car mount.

what mods do you have to hang with the STi and completely beat out the other wrx, i mean WRX's are AWD and all but until you get into suspension mods they're somehat laughable, i read stories all day about MSP's beating WRX's but man an STi through the curves? you must have some decent credentials

if the course is too tight big HP cars can't develop all their power. If the course is too tight even Lance Armstrong on his bike might pass you up. I don't know what your mods are, but a stock MSP is SLOW. Even comparing a MSP to a STI is an insult. Even if the MSP can make 300 hp you still don't have AWD.

^ but MSP's handle on par with STi's....if not better.
i was behind and STi once.....he was all over the place, almost lost it a few times.....went off road, threw up some rocks, and cracked my windshield.

A modified MSP is a stout challenger to just about anything in curves! Its not bad on the straightaways either. We are seeing some impressive runs lately. (thumb)
what mods do you have to hang with the STi and completely beat out the other wrxHe just has intake, really. I showed up too late to take part in the "Initial D run", got a little lost finding Hard Times.
Hey, Kyu, now that you have something positive to say about your car, did the hate/hate relationship get upgraded to love/hate? (blowjob)

the sti is a pig on the twisties with the stock setup....im not suprised really.....i havin ran the local mountain roads in the msp but i used to all the time in my 240sx.......and dont let the sti owner do "4 wheel drifts" thats just lookin for a nice cliff edge to fall off of....especially with the twitchy active diff of the sti......cool either way :) (thumb)

Not to be the naysayer... but those kinds of things are how kids die on country back roads. You autocross... you don't need that kind of thing to feel good about your car.

hmm awd isnt all its made out to be...been there done that...if you dont have the rest of the suspension to keep the tires on the road 4 wheels spinning does just about as much good as 2...yea i wasnt impressed at all with wrx handling...had moderate body roll and annoying understeer if you pushed it hard into a corner...im betting anything he rode brakes hard into the corner and then expected his awd to bail him out on exit speeds...too bad wrx awd will slip to the outside wheels everytime...meanwhile the msp has suspension that rivaled that of my corvette...i would take my msp against anything except minis, miatas, and porsches thru a curvey course...those damn minis....

AWD doesn't help when you are already moving at higher speeds. Get over it the wrx isn't all that. Good job man.

high power and FWD do not go together, specially in turns.
Quit being so biased.

??? STi isn't good in the corners? The MSP is good but its not that good. The WRX isn't great off the shelf, but its just a couple notches below the MSP. The STI leaves the MSP in the dust cornering.... especially exit speeds. Cornering is the STi's forte. What makes you think that its not good in the corners?
I think you might be suffering from inflated protegego. Its a common ailment.

I was with Autox MSP on the run. It was a blast! Neither of us knew the road so we just followed the braking of the STi. I was very impressed with Kyu's driving and the fact that the he stayed on the back bumper of the STi for most of the run. On the other hand we had no clue that there was a WRX that was behind us till we turned around and did the run again. We never saw the wrx till he got back to the parking lot. Even the STi driver was impressed with the handling of the msp.

i drive behind my boys sti all the time , stock i could not stick to him at all. now he always pulls away from me in third after exiting corners , they handle damn nicley as good if not better then msp. alot of this conversation is mostly driver skill based any way . i bet with any car i could beat my grandma threw the twisties . his name is autoxmsp after all

was the wrx stock? because in stock form, it takes more driver skill to handle ok..but with a few changes it handles pretty well. but yeah the msp could easily outhandle a stock wrx on the street..

AWD sucks! It's just like FWD in corners because you still have the same engine layout(front heavy), and the front tires are powered like FWD. RWD is where it's at for handling.

so why did you buy a fwd car? the msp has great handling and its fwd...yeah most cars that are rwd will handle better in most situations, but its not set in stone. much of it depends on the driver and how well they can make the car do what they want..

distant, i based my opinion on the sti related to all the other car sin its class....not the msp......compared to the evo and g35/350z etc its suspension isnt up to par.....its softer and noticably more geared towards a crusing daily drver setup.....im in no way hypin on my msp.....ive been sittin on the evo mr release to worry about how tyte my msp is (thumb)

I believe this story. The MSP is the master of the twisties.. :)
I swear driving this car thru the curves is an exhilirating experience..one of the best there is... ;)
By the way..what is it with Impreza drivers talking DOWN to Protege drivers..(crazy) . ?? LOL I mean its the same thing along with a Neon, Lancer, Civic etc. :)
I like the WRX and all, testdrove it, didnt like it as much as MSP, I dont get y they think a Impreza is anything above. Just look at Miatas in autocross, the MSP/MP3, and rx7s in circuit/road racing in Japan and its obvious Mazda OwNs in handling...

Im surprised noone asked this question yet. Were you playing an Initial D song while going through the moutain road, I believe that is the most important part. Never leave home without your Initial D Sountrack CD'z. Makes your car turn and better and faster.

The EVo handles very well. I Believe it handles better then the STi. Besides having my MSP, the EVo is my 2nd pick. First would Be Skyline R33 GT-R now that has mad handling skills. though i believe its pretty heavy in weight??
anyone wanna let me borrow their video camera? I'm goin on some twisties, tomorrow...there fun, plus AutoX is too expensive.....
