View Full Version : AC is on, Throttle Bogs when Pressed

Hello everyone,

I've kinda noticed this now that its been getting a lot hotter out there. When I have my AC on, the throttle is very sluggish at a stoplight, in some cases it even bogs down. I have been trying to find a way to accelerate faster while using the AC and even trying different methods on revving before releasing the clutch, but its been really a hit or miss. I noticed that Corksport carries this:

INDIGO Alternator/Waterpump Pulley Set

Because of their 15% reduced diameter and lightweight, energy normally used to turn the heavy stock pulley is now used to turn your drive wheels! In addition, the high performance lightweight aluminum Indigo GT Pulleys are a perfect choice for road racing ,drag racing and autocross due the reduction of water pump cavitation. Horsepower gains of 3-5 HP normally , but can vary widely depending on what has been done to the vehicle. Intalled on the Cork Sport Project MSP!

Specify: 1.6L, 1.8L, or 2.0L

Is this something I might benefit from, or is this just an inherent issue that is with any car? I noticed it less when I owned my 2003 Tiburon GT. If any of you have any pointers, it would be greatly appreciated!

Don't buy those pulleys. The size of your pulleys are supposed to stay the same, helps with balancing out your engine. I would reccomend against it.

You're gonna have to deal with the bogging down, it's created by your AC using an accessory pulley. I could be wrong but the accessory pulley might just be turned on to turn the alternator more, allowing more electricity to power your AC unit, so maybe a better alternator will do the trick?

Every car I have driven bogs down when the AC is on. If you need to get going fast, turn off the AC and turn it back on when you get up to speed.

Thanks for the input everyone! It just gets frustrating at times. If its one thing my 03 Tib had an advantage over the MSP, it was that the Throttle bogging was very negligible on the Tib -- almost none, which helped in the 100+ degree summers. Thanks again!

your tiburon had a bigger engine in it didn't it? bigger engines aren't as affected by the a/c pulley as smaller engines. btw, it gets that hot up in CO? it's not humid is it?

Humidity isn't as bad as it can be, but this week is supposed to be a hot one (for Colorado anyways). We hit 98 here in Colorado yesterday and today is supposed to be the same. I just went to Taco Hell for lunch and it felt like I took a visit to hell when I got in my car -- nearly burned my fingers trying to shift with the Sparco Knob, lol. I figured the 2.7L engine had something to do with it.

Yes and our stock intercooler doesn't help any either.

I'm wondering if a better alternator exists out there, hmmm.... I'd go for a swap if it would help.

maybe a grounding kit?

Yeah, I am planning on getting the Optima Red Top 75/35 with the HKS Circle Earth to boot. Hope that helps with electrical efficiency.

Damnit, now my front brakes are starting to do this gurgle / grinding noise at slow speeds too. What a demanding woman, lol.

I'm glad this thread was made. My car BOGS big time when the AC is on, even on 1. It also seem like it is VERY lurchy, when I shift the revs seem to drop way more than when the AC isn't on so the whole car lurches. The only thing I have been able to do to prevent this is shift higher than I normally do. During everyday driving I shift at around 3k, but with the AC I usually have to shift closer to 4k to smooth out the boggind and lurching. Dont you just hate it when you try to get on a freeway with the AC on and you can hear your turbo but you sure as hell cant feel it ?
