View Full Version : Caution to HiBoost FMIC owners and future owners

Now, I want to make clear this problem I am about to explain is in no way HiBoost's fault (probably happens to other FMIC setups too).

Anyway, the engine bay in the MSP is extremely hot as we all know. Well, I just got done staring at my beautiful polished pipes and noticed that the plastic cover over the MAZDASPEED emblem on the valve cover cover melted. I am guessing that with the metal pipes the engine bay gets a little hotter, not to mention the fact the the FMIC covers most of the radiator.

My next mod I think is going to be the EVO style hood; that would obviously fix the problem completely. For now I think I am just going to take off my valve cover cover for now (no I am not typing cover twice accidently...think about it).

Anyway, just thought I would warn FMIC users that this may be a problem with you also. My temp gauge seems to be in the same place about so I don't think it is going to cause engine killing heat.

my emblem cracked and i dont have a fmic so i dont think its from the fmic. the engine is just hot i doubt the fmic had anything to do with it cracking/melting

Remove the weather weater plastic in the front windshield in the wiper area.
this down the temperature in 50o C under the hood

welcome to owning a turbo shit gets hot quick you just drove your car extra hard after you got the fmic....

I dont want to impose, but does the hiboost fmic require you to use a cai.

To clear up any confusion, valve cover cover = engine cover.

Do you still have the MSP radiator or did you swap for a P5 radiator? I would also consider upgrading to an aftermarket P5 radiator & exploring other methods of cooling the engine bay (a subject which has been mostly ignored thus far).

Can't do the P5 radiator with the hiboost kit I don't think...only the iON. I removed my weather stripping and it does help a little. I think the evo hood is the way to go though.

the one with reverse scoops? I love that look. I sure hope that's what they're making.

i believe a few owners had a similar problems and a lot of them were still stock...so I doubt it's the FMIC...

I already posted a thread about my own custom ideas for heat extraction, but I think everyone else prefers to just buy some pre-fabricated hood (also because most of them are CF).

if you don't mind covering up at least SOME of the polished pipes (or at least the ones that matter coming off the compressor side), wrap them in some heat wrap. it should help cut down some of that heat.

Well if the pipes are hot, this means your air is hot, you might want to think about getting some thermal wrap to possibly keep the pipes from getting any hotter.

Maybe someone can fabricate a new valve/engine cover for our car.....wait isnt there a carbon fiber one? Meh, too expensive though.

Has anyone actually tested the temp. difference between w/ weatherstripping and without? I think I will use my temp. gun tommorow and see if there is really a diff.

Are you running a higher pressure rad cap? Water wetter or B-cool? I haven't had any melting issues but my overflow bottle will climb in insane outside temps + running the car extremely hard. But I am running a higher pressure cap and I'm running water wetter.

edit: I hope you aren't using the AC in hard runs (nervous)

A/C compressor is controlled by PCM, which has a throttle position sensor and load sensor, meaning the PCM shuts off the a/c compressor when it goes above a certain load and throttle position. At wide open throttle your a/c shuts off anyways.

I'm not talking for 1/4 runs. I'm talking for a long stretch. You have no worries in the car overheating on hard fast shorter stretches. It's the long hard street jaunts maybe in the country or even in the city where you have periods of both open air and stopped.

Excellent info Blk (thumb)

No you can't.

I will try the weatherstripping thing...I am glad to hear (sounds kinda mean) that others had this problem when stock...removes some of my worries.

I have the stock radiator; my only choice would be the upgraded MSP radiator (forgot who makes it) since I have the HiBoost kit.

And yes, I did run my car hard after the FMIC installation (went to the track the next night :) )

AWR makes the upgraded MSP style radiator.

just woundering, if we use a evo hood and the car is parked outside in a thunderstorm, isn't the water going to get into your engine bay right on top of the spark plugs?

yep not really an issue unless it floods in there.. but youll rust everything pretty well.

About the water getting inside the engine bay, the EVO style hood comes with covers that you put on under your hood where the vents are.

If you are expecting it to rain hard; then yes.

I don't know if that is the one I want, I just want some kind of vented hood.

For all that it matters, the weather stripping trick works GOOD.. After I left the NOPI event in Maryland yesterday, I had to drive back up towards Fredricksburg to get to Potomic Mills. I95 was jam packed heading north, with lots of stop and go's. I removed the weather stripping before I left the track and when I reached my destination, I popped the hood to see if I could feel the diff, and Yes, it was very noticible.

Even after some very hard driving and trying to out run my buddies Golf R32 on the return trip back to Va. Beach the engine still didn't get excessively hot.

Sorry to whore your thread, but just wanted to say:
Thanks for the tip guys..
