View Full Version : Aem Ems?

A while ago I thought I read a thread about the AEM EMS coming out with a configuration for our cars. I just talked to a factory certified AEM guy and he looked it up and said he didn't see anything for our cars? Does anyone know anything about this? Maybe it was Jersey the one that told me about it... Jersey?

That whole thing is in the air now.
Wagner Motorsports (wagner) and Turbo Performance Works (perfworks) got the AEM PnP to work on the Protege.
Then with the whole Nick K (perfworks) situation, with him going to jail, taking money for parts from Andy (wagner) without telling him.... I'm not sure if it is still available.
Your best bet would be to call up Wagner Motorsports (www.wagnermotorsports.net). I think I remember seeing somewhere that Andy said he was still going to sell the AEM, but I'm not 100% sure, and don't want to give you false information. So just give them a call and see whats up.

The system isnt developed by AEM cuz they have better things to do and develop then spend time decoding and R&Ding a EMS for the MSP.
Wagner Motorsports (wagner) and Turbo Performance Works (perfworks) got permission or something like that to tune AEM EMS for our cars. It will be PnP. But AEM isnt in charge of developing the system for MSP...the 2 tuners are. Havnt heard about it in awhile. I heard AEM is a very nice (user friendly) unit and is well worth the price tag.

^^^ Yup.
But even though AEM didn't develop the system for the Protege, they will still offer full factory support, because it is still an AEM PnP EMS.
Is the AEM an amazing unit worth the price tag? Definitely.
Is it the best solution for you? IDK, might be, might not be. There are several options available, I suggest you research each one extensively to make sure your hard-earned dollars are going to features you need, and not paying for features you will never use.

.........taking money for parts from Andy (wagner) without telling him.......
What does that mean?? Like he took money from buyers of Wagner products but didn't give andy the order??
I'm want the aem ems but if that is not avaible it might have to get teh Unichip

Yes. Check the 'perfworks scamming people thread' for more details if you want to read up on it.

doesnt the AEM unit have like an "auto tune" or "auto Mapping" feature? Meaning you set rough perameters and drive it around and it tunes itself. Of corse dyno tuning is for better performance but this unit is able to tune itself....I think
Im also wondering if you can save 2 or more maps and have some kinda switch to switch between the 2 maps (like unichip). I dont want to plug in my lap top everytime I see someone cocky at a stop light and have to show him up. If its Pocket PC compatable that would be sweet too.
The problem with unichip is finding local Unichip tunners. Im sure you can find AEM tuners everywhere...the program itself is very friendly...from what I've seen. I hope its cheaper then Microtech. Finding someone to tune haltech is a pain too...but I think AEM is easy.

AEM might be the most friendly user compared to the rest out there.

So if you buy it and take it to a certified AEM tuner, they would be able to create the maps and tune it for the MSP?

I'm getting the AEM installed July 1st. I'm sure Andy will post the Dyno results. This will be the first car with the AEM on a MSP I believe.

How? Is the unit already out. Its the cheapest Standalone out and its PnP and last time I checked there wasnt a PnP AEM EMS out...they are working on it.
Let us know how it goes

I have the AEM at Andy's place. I'll let you know how it is. From what Andy was saying you can boost at 15psi all the time. Next is the internals, and will have to reprogram the AEM again. It's not cheap $2,200 for everything.

damn $2200? AEM PnP is suppose to be around $1200 and with all the sensors and equipment im guessing $1800? I guess you getting it dyno tuned too so thats why its toping $2K.
I got the AEM EMS for about $1550 with $250 extra for the aem wideband o2. I have had it installed and running on my car for a little while now. There are still a few things that need to be worked out, but for the most part it kicks ass.
I have the only Protege with the AEM at the moment. Andy over at Wagner Motorsports is able to sell the AEM EMS. I will be getting dyno tuned again once they have their in-shop dyno installed.
I have been busy, and trying to address some transmission issues for the last few weeks. But soon I will be installing a knock sensor, electronic boost control solenoid, and hooking up a/c load compensation so it stops idling funny and stalling when I turn on the A/C. These were all things that I expected to have done with the installation until it went awry. At this point I would rather just take care of that stuff myself. I am tired of giving my car away to be worked on.
Oh yeah, and I need to re-add the MAP sensor that my car was tuned with and was supposed to still have.

Theres only one thing that concerns me. I dont want to plug in my laptop everytime I want to change maps. Is there some kinda switch involved so I can switch between 2 maps...like unichip design.
Lets say im driving on "econo mode" maybe 5psi that gets me good gas milage. And I see this cocky driver whose reving up and blowing off at me. Of corse I would like to shut him up and make him think a protege just smoked him. But I dont want to plug in my laptop and load up a new map...which takes time to boot up and he'll be long gone. Is there some kind of switch that would allow you to instanly switch between 2 diffrent maps. Or even if they have a PDA/Handheld PC type thing would be cool too.

doesn't sound too much like a PnP system to me...

You caught that too? Maybe special circumstances due to it being a turbo'd MP3? Does it not require as many support products in the MSP? Wishful thinking, I'm sure, but I had to ask.

Ehh, well knock control isn't mandatory, it's just an option,
The map sensor isn't needed, but i wanted one.
I didn't need to do electronic boost control, it's just an idea. i wanted to test out a few directions utilizing the AEM and making it work the way I want it.
A couple more sensors does not override the fact that the EMS itself is in fact plug 'n' play.
Let me see, i think these are the only things that are necessary:
1. adding the EMS, that's plug 'n' play
2. adding the AEM wideband o2 sensor
3. modification to 1 cam gear
4. a/c load compensation (hooking up one input on the AEM to accomodate for the load the A/C is adding)
The fact that i have larger injectors, want electronic boost control, MAP sensor, etc. has nothing to do with the EMS, they are just some of the huge range of options that EMS gives.

what do you mean "modification to one cam gear"?

Ah ok, that clears things up a bit. Thanks. I'd love to find a piggyback that doesn't involve a lot of hacking into the wiring. I'm still at the point where I'd like my mods to be mostly reversible.

and where is this on the cam gear??? I could see it being on the crank pulley as that has all the "teeth" used by the magnetic induction pickup that serves as ouer CAS.... but the CAM gears???? the purpose of the teeth on them is for meshing with the timing belt.... not the best of things to remove teeth from.
