View Full Version : Magnaflow catback probs

Here's a quick history. Got the exhaust installed, worked fine until i drove for over an hour. When i revved at 3100-3400 the exhaust would bang around - figured the hangers were getting soft and the exhaust would bounce from backpressure. Installed the kartboy hangers, no more big banging from 3100-3400, just vibration noise. When idling, exhaust slaps the underbody of the car.

I've been trying to figure out my catback for a week now... Brought it to Speedy Auto yesterday, they installed my 10mm hangers for me and bent the front arm on the muffler (the one closer to the front of the car).

What's touching the car is the midpipe. At Speedy, the guy showed me where it had been tapping the car. (i initially thought it was the muffler making all the noise, until i saw otherwise yesterday afternoon) My whole catback is incredibly tight under the car. Are all the Magnaflow catbacks like that? Does anybody know how i can the midpipe drop a little lower?

I'm going to try a few things tonight - bend the arm a little more and loosen the connection between the axleback and midpipe (it's shoved together really tight now)

My Magnaflow rattles too. At first it really bothered me, but now I am fairly used to it. I think probably any aftermarket cat-back would do the same. I write it off to the price I pay for modding my car. (dunno)

racing beat doesn't do it, nor does thermal (on the p5), but they both sit much lower. I don't tolerate imperfections in stuff like that. I mean, worse comes to worse, i'll bring it to a shop and have the resonator part bent downwards like 3*, and that should settle it.

My GReddy evo was not a perfect fit, but a couple hose clamps on the inside hanger fixed that. I dont hear any vibrations or anything either, just straight up backfiring :)

I used to have some vibration... turned out the shop hadnt tightened the bolts on the hangers..tightened them up.. no more vibrations

umm... can you explain what 'hangers' are to you.

terminology may be different in my head.

I'm going to see if loosening up the fasteners would help. I got it installed at some joe-blow shop.. they may have shoved the axleback portion into the midpipe portion a little too hard, pulling the midpipe up.

the metal hangers that connect to the muffler, and which connect to the rubber hangers... damn that is confusing :D

ok... what bolts do you have attached to your hangers?
mine are welded to the muffler assy.

where they bolt to the subframe/underbody... mine are also welded to the muffler. There are two i believe and u will see where they mount.

I dont have a digicam but I think this drawing will help clear things up. The hose clamp is actually holding pretty well. (hose clamp sheet metal is good for tension). Thats only for the inner exhaust hanger, the outer I used the stock rubber one. Once again this is the greddy evo I have.
