is it necessary to take off the tires to install a tranny?

The reason why I ask is that when I saw my car up on the lift when they were replacing the tranny i noticed all the tires were off. Is this normally how it's done?

gotcha, it's just my breaks don't seem as stiff as they were before they went into the shop, it could be because i drove the rental so long i forgot how my car felt...thanx.
