So i was driving along today when this jeep pulls in front of me. I get on his ass of course cause he's a moron, and doesn't speed up at all. I switch lanes, and downshift to 3rd. The clutch is all the way in, and i hear grinding noises. and when i hit the gas, it just revs. I immediately hit the flashers and pull over. I smell burnt clutch and something else but i don't know if that was coming from my car or what. Seeing nothing spilled out onto the road, i get back in my car start it up, and the thing is now stuck in the 3rd gear position.
That makes it EXTREMELY hard to get going, and i burn up m clutch some more. I crawl my way back home, and playing around with it in my driveway, i can get it out of third gear, but whenever i put it in another gear, its still in third. AND i can't put it in reverse at all, making getting out of my driveway difficult.
OH and even when it sits in "neutral" its still in gear.

The worst part is, i was prepped to put my turbo in next week. So i am selling everything i have now in another thread to get some money back and get my car fixed.
And when it rains it pours, I hit every red light on the way home....

shit! how many miles are on your car? how hard do you drive the thing?

Same thing happened to me about a month ago, except mine was stuck in forth...its a bitch to start going but i was able to drive the rest of the way to work and then back home. Your tranny isnt blown, you just broke the gear forks, so the transmission is stuck in third gear. When you shift into another gear, its trying to engage third and that other gear at the same time and since they spin at different rpm's, it won't go. How old is your car? I just called the dealer and they came and picked it up and fixed it under warranty.

I bought it in July of 2002, it has about 35,000 miles on it. I'd call my dealership, but last time i was in there i told them to kiss my ass cause they wouldn't tell me why i randomly had a check engine light go on, and my car shut down when i hit 70 mph. They blamed it on the intake, and now i can't really go back there...

Haha, that sucks. It should definately still be under warranty. I went in with intake and exhaust and thy didnt give me any shit. If there are any other dealers relatively close, they will do it too...any mazda dealership really.

I didn't drive it hard, i was waiting to install my turbo.
I did learn on it though, so i expected some wear and tear.
How much will it cost to fix if i can't get my dealership to cover it?

Find another dealer bro

That is what exactly happened to me. You wont get it out of there. You most likely broke the shift forks or a shift fork. They are weak. The guy at the dealership told me so. I was pissed but also reliefed because my car was still under warranty. Is Yours? Best Luck man just say it happened on its own. That is what I did.

06-08-2004, 11:43 PM
The other two are about an hour away... i guess i could get it towed to there. But i remember one tried to void my warranty cause i had messed with the headlights, and electrical system due to my stereo. I hate dealerships thats all there is to it.

I think its about an 8 hour job, and i know around here they charge like $80 an hour for service, plus they'll probably need a new 1st/2nd gear fork and 3rd/4th gear fork, plus a couple other parts...i dont really remember id have to look at my invoice. With all that you're lookin at a pretty heavy bill. There really is no reason they shouldn't warranty it though. If they don't you should definately call another dealership.

06-08-2004, 11:46 PM
They'll give me shit about my Kartboy shifter and bushings...

Jeph
06-08-2004, 11:47 PM
Could someone other than my dealer do it?
Would i be better off sourcing a used tranny from a junkyard and just swapping it?

They'll give me shit about my Kartboy shifter and bushings...
If you still have the original just throw it back in there. Also, im not positive about the 8 hours, it seems kinda high now that i think about it, but for some reason that number is stuck in my head.

Jeph
06-08-2004, 11:49 PM
I have the original shifter, but i had to cut the bushing out, cause, well, it was easier that way.

If you wanted to do that i suppose you could...i just definately wouldn't want to pay at all when your car is still under warranty. If u want i'll go check my invoice and see what parts they needed for my car so you can call the dealership and get a price on just those parts instead of getting a whole nother tranny.

Jeph
06-08-2004, 11:55 PM
I'll call my dealership in the morning and see what they can do.

Yeah, you are always around when freebies are involved huh :flip: I'm taking it in today with them still on. And its not a quick job, i could swap out the shifter, but the bushings are a pain in the ass. I had to cut mine out.

Jeph

DUDE calm down. I was kidding, I know you just wanted to help out. I drove it down to the dealer today, and he said it shouldn't be a problem, cause the MSP has a shortshifter on it stock anyways. ANd if i need anything, I ALWAYS ask for your help. What aother bro was there when i had to put a stock intake back on? I know you will help me out if i need it.

that is very true. in addition to your short shifter i wouldnt be surprised that it caused premature fork / rail failure.

Jeph
06-10-2004, 02:57 AM
could you provide me with documentation that proves that a lowered pivot point has any effect on the premature wear of the shift forks? Not to be rude, i just want to see it. :)

My 3rd gear is gone right now, so instead of rebuilding, I'm just gonna swap in a used transaxle from a Protege DX. Cheaper, and the labor is free since I'm doing it!

Jeph
06-10-2004, 03:28 AM
You can have my third gear, its the only one that works anyways. I'll sell it to you for cheap!! LOL

im saying thats not the cause...but thats what im saying the dealership whould say if they truid to screw u over...
so do u have to pay for it or is it under waranty?

Jeph

I don't know, they are supposed to call me. I'll probably find out tomorrow.

hi-perf

the transmission is supposed to have flex all over, including the linkage. when you install stiff bushings and a shorter throw shifter, it puts stress on the linkage, and might have prematurely caused fork or shift rail failure.

Gbourdon
06-10-2004, 09:02 AM
^^^ This is why I try to be as gentle as possible on the linkage. LinuxRacr has a differnt problem than the linkage I'm sure. Shift forks break if you are banging the transmission into gears. I have the KB bushings and will have a short shifter in there soon, shift with tha fingger tips! Not a fist on the shifter! Ha ha. Good luck with the fix. I have broken shift forks in another car in the past and I know it was my fault from abusing the shifter.

So update:
I got my car back today, 2 broken shift forks, the 1&2 fork, and the 3&4. I didn't get a clutch in time for them to install it so i'm driving around on my burnt out one for now. It engages at a different spot than i remember and the pedal is really light.
Everything was covered under warranty. My dealer wouldn't recognize a short shifter if it hit him in the back of his head. I think it helps that i had the kartboy, and its black and looks stock. He didn't say anything about the bushings except that they were cool looking.

it all depends on what mechanic works on ya car bro... some techs are dicks.. and when they dont feel like workin on it, or it is too much work and not enough money, they will find something to try and void it. Most Warrenty work pays less thats the reason...
for example, My dad and I are putting a lexus back together, cause some stupid mofo tried to fix a pop timming belt... water pump seized up and poped the belt, the owner calls us , then 2 weeks later no car.. we called her to see if it was towed to the wrong place.. She told us no her nephews friend was fixin it.. Well 1 week later she calls us cryin, the guy toor the car apart and took the money for parts, never came back.. the dumbass took one head off,non interferance engine(v8)
anyways... it pays 21 hours to put the car back together and get everything running right... warrenty didnt cover this one, if it did we would only get paid 15 to 17 hours...

so if you are a tech warrenty work sucks... u dont make much money off of them...

Well he drove it, and i think it would be pretty obvious. Besides the shorter height of the knob, the whole shift is about half as much as a stock car. And its super notchy. Oh well I don't care :) I have my car back and its great.
On a side note though. My 2nd to 3rd shift is weird now. It feels like i get a grind in it if i do it fast at all. What could this be from?

Jeph
06-25-2004, 01:16 PM
I can drive just fine thank you very much :)
And i already sold the turbo kit. I'll be boosted within 6 months anyways, but i have to pay for school, and other things first.

get that up and running to the darkside

Jeph
06-26-2004, 01:13 PM
Oh it will be don't worry. I am going to source out a new transmission to have just in case this one falls apart again, because it just doesn't feel right. So after that, and i get school covered, its boost time. :)
