View Full Version : 4 speed auto -> 5 speed auto tranny swap
Has it been done? Is it possible? I was thinking that instead of doing a
auto->manual tranny swap why not just swap a 2003 5 speed auto into my 2002 4 speed auto. Just lookin for some feedback.
I assume the 5 speed auto can handle more torque than the 4, if not call me a idiot and ignore this thread :P

probbaly cheaper to just buy a new car. for starters, i'm sure the 5-spd auto is not going to be had for cheap. plus, it probably won't be a direct drop-in.
save yourself $$$ and headaches. sell yours, and buy what you want if the extra gear is important to you. i don't think there's any worthwhile difference in the torque-handling ability (esp in the torque monster that is the Protege) (rofl2).

where are you gonna get a 5spd auto? if you're thinking the mazda6s, don't even bother.

talk to deckedoutmp5, he didn't do the swap but researched the hell out of it and decided it'd be better/easier to take the hit on it.
what I do know is that you will need the tranny, ecu, harnesses, and the gauge cluster (somehow connected with needing the ecu (dunno) ) amongst other parts...

Wish the sportshift was 5 speed. Hate the high RPM highway cruising.
