Then what do they do?
I read this statement from another forum..and seemed very strange to me.
Don't those mods give you extra HP -> extra power -> makes you faster?

Little extra hp from just intake/exhaust (see my sig). Maybe 8-10hp if you are lucky. Which isn't terrible, and every little bit helps, but it aint a turbo. :)

yeah, also most intakes dont make power, they move it to where u get the hp at higher rpms, but loose it at lower rpms
all intake/exhaust mods really do is allow your engine to breath and therefore perform to its full potential. if you want real power out of the 2.0, youll have to look into forced induction. but thats the easiest way to blow a motor that i know of, so youll have to beef up the insides a bit as well.

Not necessarily true. If you want to get technical, unless we're talking about 'tuned' intakes and exhaust systems, all they do is reduce pumping losses. With smaller factory plastic intakes, with moldings and restrictive(yet quiet) intake boxes, the engine uses a lot of energy trying to suck in air. Imagine using one of those REALLY thin straws to suck up a milkshake. You can almost always increase hp and torque with a good intake, because you can increase volumetric efficiency throughout the entire rev range.
It works the same with exhaust. Stock exhaust is quiet and cheap to produce. But very restrictive. Once again, the engine uses considerable energy to blow exhaust gases out. The more you can free this up(while maintaining velocity), the more power you free up.
Anyone who thinks exhaust is just for the sound needs to have their head checked.

How true! My 1996 had a free flow exhaust and I can say low-mid power where quite better! It was more high-rev happy too since restriction was next to nothing. For real power make sure you change the WHOLE exhaust system (not just the tail muffler, that is a musical instrument, indeed, and will most likely reduce power)

I'm quite active in the NA section, but no-one's asked me to be a mod....

Thanks everyone for your reply..
What I meant by "faster" was that would intake/exhaust mod will make it "Faster" than a stock car?
That is to say, how much difference is 8-10 HP increase in terms of the power you "feel" when you drive, compared to bare stock car? For example does your car go up hills easier than before? do you get better acceleration from stop lights? and so on..
I know these mods are not any kind of major upgrades..
I just wanted to know what "tangible" benifits you get from them..:)

be sure to get a protege thats 2001 or above. they are 2.0 liter engines and have more aftermarket support (and look cooler IMO)

More aftermarket support? Does the FP have this kind of support?
