Is there a big difference between the protege engine and the 3. will parts be compatable. has anyone tried?

You are wrong, there are different brands and not every 2.0 liter is built the same way.

No he wasn't. You can swap parts on any 2.0 liter engine to put in your mazda3 2.0 engine. That's why they name engines using this type of nomenclature; so people can trade or swap any part they want. I'm going to put a porsche engine in my 5-door when I get the money. Can't wait!
