I want to change my transmission oil and my filter on my 01 ES Protege and I wanted to know where is the filter located.
On every auto tranny I've worked on, the filter was easy to find once the pan was removed. Just drop the pan and pull off the thing that looks like the new filter you bought before taking on this project.

Once I drop the pan the filter will be there.
You'll have to move the Transaxle Fluid Temperature (TFT) sensor out of the way. Once the TFT is out of the way you can pull the oil strainer off.

the best thing prolly if u changin the oil to do is , swap out the filter.. top it off to drive and go to a quick lube place that does tranny flushes... so u will not just cchange 3 to 4 quaters but the full tranny oil, much better results... shifting will improve..

Was it a pain to remove the Transaxle Fluid Temperature sensor.

the auto transmisson on the protege has a steel built in filter..never needs replaced. just flush it and fill it.

ur kinda right, the filter is in the tranny , drop the pan ull see it, it is changeable, and i dont think it is a steel filter.. it is best to change it each time u get a tranny flush..

Which is better a tranny flush or draining the tranny fluid from the pan and changing the filter.

both, it is best if you drop the pan change the filter, then trany flush..
when you drop the pan and change filter, you only change about 2 to 3 quarts of fluid, the tranny prolly holds about 5 to 6 quarts.
how many miles are on your car?

Does a flush do anything to the tranny seals.
I have 50000 Miles.

According to the mazda dealer you don't ever have to change the filter, not that means thier right, just what they told me last friday when I had them service mine. They did say it's a steel screen also.

every 30k, flush your tranny, do your front brakes, flush your radiator. every 60k, do your rear brakes and change your plugs also.

but the 1.6 l has a different auto trany than yours, but i can still be mistaken on the steel filter.. i was always told to change that when you flush to be safe..
