Custom Hardpipes ??

I noticed that all the aftermarket hardpipes being sold have hoses (hump) that connect to the IC and intake manifold. My question is, are they taking a couple inches off the length so that the hose compensates? The stock plastic ones go right over the inlets and then get clamped on. You couldn't do this with a metal pipe, right?
