View Full Version : Another Tranny Failure

I'm convinced my car is cursed.... After being hit by other cars several times, being keyed, having my window broken and radio stolen, this happens.....
Driving to work today.... on the highway.... I dropped my remote down by my feet so I pull in the shoulder to pick it up and make sure it doesn't end up under a pedal.... grab it, start pulling back onto highway..... 1-2 gear, no prob.... 2-3 gear.... crunch..... free rev, nothing..... put the clutch back in, release it, cool.... 3-4 gear.... why am i at the same rpms as 3rd gear..... and why can i shift into 4th with no clutch.... and am i still in gear when i'm in neutral..... and why can't i shift into any other gear but 3 or 4....
After checking my rpm and speed, i finally determined that i was in 4th gear.... stopped at a light, tried to put it in 1st... after some wiggling, it seemed to go in..... but the wheels wouldn't move.... stalled.......
Needless to say my tranny is very f***ed and i need a tow truck. I know i'm not the first that this has happened to.... anyone who had this happen wanna tell me how it turned out for them?
I love this car but it has been the bane of my existence!!!

That is the exact same thing that happened to my 1st tranny. Stuck in 4th and if you put it on 1st or 2nd and let out on the clutch the wheels don't move and it stalls.
They will replace it for free, and if not raise hell and let us know cause this is the 5th or 6th car to do this exact same thing.

Yeah, there is fast shifting with finesse, and then there is fast shifting by slamming the stick into gear. If you do the latter, you will find yourself going to the the dealer for this quite often. Don't slam your shifter into gear!

I don't slam the shifter ever. When i learned how to drive stick my friend told me that driving stick is like jerking off... whether you do it fast or slow, be gentle! (hump) lol

Latest update.............
Tranny is being rebuilt.... i still haven't gotten an answer as to what broke, but they're fixing it under warranty....
Also, they're replacing my clutch for me because the broken tranny made me shred it up in order to move the car (moving from stop in 3rd gear=angry clutch!).... this is why i took the car 80 miles from my house to get it fixed.... this is the only good dealership i've found.... i mentioned the clutch non-chalantly in passing and they are replacing it.... nice to know there is at least one good mazda dealership in nj

Well my tranny is starting to act up again.. I can see something happening in the near future again,.,, How did you brake your clutch exactly? maybe I can try it next time... cause I want a new clutch.... ;)
BTW I am not abusing my car in anyway what so ever... I dont' slam into gears or whatever or power shift... but I was the first one with tranny failuer on this site.... now I don't want to be the first to have it a second time.
I will tell you right now that it's your shifter fork that is broken.. if not get the work order and it will tell youwhat they replaced... and you will know what broke. Took my dealer 3 weeks before even getting their hands on the borken piece.. so good luck.

Which dealership did you take it to?

JC, i actually told the service rep when he called me before they had the tranny out that it was the thrid gear shift fork (because you said so! hehe).... i'm gonna see what borke when i get the work order, but i don't care right now as long as they fixed it....
as for my clutch.... i simply told them that trying to get my car out of a parking garage where the entrance was on the 3rd floor and i was on the first floor meant i had to rip the shit out of my clutch..... try moving your car uphill starting in 3rd gear.... you have to rev the $hit out of the engine and let the clutch up at some stupidly high rpm to get it to move.... and then when i tried to put it in any gear, the car stalled and that was the clutch taking that anuse too..... so it was really torn up when i got it to them and they new i would've raised hell..... which is cool cuz i was gonna start looking for a new clutch anyway....
I took it to Maple shade Mazda in Maple shade.... they're the best dealership in the state as far as i'm concerned.... i bought my car there.... the salesman, roy, owns an rx-7 and the guy knows his shit.... I would reccommend them to anyone....

Mine sure wasn't just a shifter fork. They said I sheared every tooth off of 2nd and 3rd gear and my car would not move at all. The service order said the whole trans. was "chewed up". I got a brand new one but they said they will not do it for free again. And also watch out for those damn mazda dealers. They forgot to put in the bushings that go where the linkage connects to the transmission. I was wondering why I had so much play in my shifter.

Do they make short shifters with adjustable stops? Sounds like that would be the best way to prevent this in the future. And you can shift as hard as you like... :)

i had the same thing happen after 8,000 miles and they rebuilt it and then again after 22,000 miles and they wanted to rebuld it again and i told them no and they put a new tranny in under warenty. if this happens to anyone else in the future try to get a whole new tranny.

Javy212, that's too bad. Thanks for letting us all know of your problems. Do you know if the shift fork is the same in use as in the Protege5 5-speed? I do know that getting it into 3rd and 4th quickly can sometimes NOT work, wondering if it's the same shift-fork problem. I guess I need to be careful...
BTW which dealership do you take it to - 80 miles from Leonia? I'm in Englewood, NJ and am looking for a place I can trust...

javy212
ibought mine from maple too
the sales department is the shit BUT the service dept is the worst ive ever seen
i had the same problem 3 -4 shift fork and and 3rd gear shattered, clutch and pressure plate
all because i was pissed a cop gave me a ticket so i was driving like an ass
the biggist problem though is that our system DOES NOT use cables like honda to engage
we use STEEL linkages with very tight clearances
the fork happens to be the weak link in the chain that breaks because nothing is absorbing the pain other than directly to the fork
yeah roy knows his shit big rx7 fan
are you in south jersey?

I have had my trans worked on three times, last time they completely replaced the trans with a new one. I have less than 14,000 miles on mine. I posted this on this forum and several assholes here were insisting that it was my driving and one guy even hoped the dealer would sue me because I am persueing the lemon law here on mine. I only posted my delimma to help others on this forum. Anyway, good luck. And if anyone reads this who criticized me, F.U.!!

From the "Protege FAQ":
The clutch release fork was also beefed up on the MazdaSpeed Protegé, so
for 3rd generation owners with the 2.0l engine, these parts are also
recommended:
KL03-16-520A clutch release fork
F202-16-102A clutch release fork pin
Hope this helps.

my tranny is on its way to failure, if i drive it aroudn town for about an hour and a half not nessacerliy driving hard just shifting alot it gets hot and locks me out of 1st and 2nd and then proceeds to grind into third, and the other day i was ocming up to a lgith so i ptu it in nuetrl, sat at the light then when it turned green a i put it into first (with the clutch in) and it still made a horendous grinding noise going into gear.

My advice, change the Transmission fluid as soon as possble to Redline Super Light Shock Proof gear oil. After I changed mine to this, I had no more issues. Motorsport Sales in Dallas off TI Blvd and Floyd Cir. is where I get mine.

my tranny latley wont let me go into 4th with out letting the clutch in then out again. i had the dealer put redline mt-90 in when i got my LSD put in. I think maybe they didnt put it in. It is still notchy, i think i will have to order some more and do it myself. I hope to get to the dealer by the end of the week.

Does anyone know if you can adjust the clutch travel, i feel even when ithe pedals at the floor it should be a lil farther down.
