Somebody in the NA camp would have purchased a piggyback or standalone of some sort, and tuned their setup. I can't seem to find anyone that has, except for the AEM NA test mule. But there werent many mods on it.
So what do you think an MP3 could do with intake, header, exhaust, more agressive cams and an MPI tuner to get rid of the ridiculous AFRs in open loop? I read in a thread here that somebody dyno'd their header, and they were getting like 11-11.5 AF ratios after 4000RPMs or so. WTF?! What would be a decent AFR to aim for while at WOT and getting pretty high in the RPM band and not explode? 13s?

Do it. I would if I had the cash.

I'm contemplating. I've been all about a turbo since riding in Little Beavis's car, but its my daily ride, and its expensive to do it right (J&S which I have, WBO2, proper guages, kit, and you're looking at $4000+). So I was thinking about trying it out. I don't even think I want a shitload of power anymore from this car. I just want another 30-40 HP, even 30. But I know NA won't go far without tuning it.

You wont break into the 13's but 14's would be nice.

I think he was talking about the AF ratios = 13s

Oh right, read saves lives. I should punish myself with some.

Yeah. We all know the ECU mapping gives some overly rich AFRs when at WOT, for safety. But what AFR should one aim for in open loop (which happens to be easiest to tune) on a NA setup? Something more agressive but still "safe". I've been reading turbo stuff for so long, so I don't even know what to aim for in an NA setup.

what are we talking about here? Any website i can check out about whatever everyone is tlaking about.

I'm getting Greddy E-Manage for my car, but that'll be after headers, before cams. I'm going to do wideband tuning on my car after the header, since I have an Air Flow Meter which allows me to run leaner or richer depending on flapper door tension. I'm not sure about the FS, but the BP seems to have variables at WOT along with it's preset maps.
Best A/F is whereever the car makes best power, and it'll be different for every car. In general, best power is 12.5, so I'd shoot for 12.3-13 on an NA during WOT. Luckily most cars run rich from the factory for safety reasons, which is why you always have some room under the stock ECU to increase power and still have fuel.

Thanks for the reply.
Yeah, if I decided to go the NA route this is what I'd do:
(I have an intake, and a J&S Safeguard)
1) Forza Header
2) Bosal Exhaust
3) MPI Tuner
4) Cams
With the MPI tuner, I'd want to tune the fuel curve, and then use the J&S to aid me in advancing timing. After cams, I'd tune some more. My main thing is to get rid of the hideous 11-11.5 AFRs when you're flooring it. Any other opinions?
The MP3 is supposedly 140HP. We typcially dyno at 109whp. I'd be happy with 30-40more HP ie. 132-140whp (thats using a 22% driveline loss based on the 109whp->140hp). If its feasible, I'd probably enjoy that. And it'd cost about $1100-$1200 after selling the J&S after using it to detect knock. Who knows. Is it possible?

Sounds VERY possible. Hold off on leaning it out right now, since exhaust and cams will increase airflow. You could be just where you want to be with those mods, unless the stock OBDII decides to kill your power. But with the aftermarket computer, those numbers are definitely possible.

This system is the shit! It is supposed to work with the Mazda 2.0.
