This is a thread to list how many people have had their LSD fail.
(meaning a registry only)
Please open a new thread for discussion.
Please post your miles or approx. miles at the time. Also, please note if yours was welded or not and if you had the spring or non spring version.

DO NOT post your mileage if you DID NOT break yours yet. You are making this thread more confusing by posting your mileage!

t3ase - ~24k. lsd replaced. there was also a stock msp that was *just* ripped apart due to the exact same problem when i was there picking my car up.

my lsd blew right past 19000. stock car. Soon I will get a quaife lsd, i already have the shop manuals parts washer and varius other tools i need. Mazda left everything torn apart thrown in a box with the bolts and mixed it together but I plan on doing it my self

Well I got bit as well......Yesterday coming home from work I take the last corner onto the street my house is on when the MSP stopped putting power to the ground....It would go into every gear but would sit and whine but not go anywhere. So I had it towed back to work. This morning I pushed it in and started tearing it apart....The clutch pressure plate fingers were definetly warped and the pressure plate was blue (can't imagine why). I had the transmission out in under 1 1/2 hrs. and disassembled it. Found as I sort of expected the lsd had split apart from the ring gear......now that I actually got to look at it in person it almost looks like it would be an open diff. What a shitty design in my opinion. I think I will end up getting another Mazda lsd depending on how long its gonna take for one and how much its gonna cost.
I am ordering an ACT clutch and have to talk to corksport about that lightweight mazdaspeed flywheel (if it really is under $200) I will get it as well.
Now in my opinion I don't think the dragracing hurt the lsd, in my opinion it was autocrossing it with the same set-up that I drag race with (don't know the hp level but its pretty damn high for a protege). Ever since then I was getting a slight driveline vibration in all gears, so I figured something was going just wasn't sure what it was (nor did I really care -read- weak link--).

Where the LSD in your transaxle snaps in 2 pieces at the drive ring gear. Pics in that thread above.
There are 2 versions of the MSP LSD.
One was in the original 03 and maybe some the latter 03.5/03.7 got the revised versions.
Heres the pics to explain where the torque load splits the diff.

More info on the new revised LSD.
LSD = Limited slip differential
Locks up both spider gears to turn the wheels equally under load to improve traction and torque distribution. While slipping slightly to maintain driveability around turns so the tires dont squeal a lot on every turn b/c the inside tire has a smaller turning radius.

I blew mine at 35,000 miles. I was doing burnouts with slicks on all day, redline clutchdrops, autoX, in short being a real hooligan. Final straw was a burnout with the wheels turned.

broke mine last tuesday on the way to work was replace under warranty on wednesday with the revised one the only differance between the two is the revised does not have the springs and plates inside its able to actuate without them. 14,800 miles

It appears as though most of the LSD failures are on 2003 and very few on 2003.5 Strange considering they are supposed to have the same LSD. Maybe 2003 drivers are just maniacs! (or maybe we will see 2003.5 failures once miles start to creep up)

Two have said theirs have failed, why haven't they been added to the list? Anything other than miles and their name and they are ommitted from the list? If you guys are going to mod... then you also need to READ a WHOLE sentence before you tell them that their posts dont matter just because it's not "in the correct format". You can at least do THAT much for the community members. It's like answering a jeapordy question without saying first "I believe the answer is what is an LSD Alex?". "I'm sorry, 'I believe' is not in the form of a question, that's -$1000 from your score."
The fact that he asks just for name and mileage is quite apparent to me. If people went on with their stories but didn't post mileage, well that doesn't do the thread creator any good, which is I assume he asked me to clean up.
If you have a problem with that, talk to him about his desires.
If you have a problem with my moderating, speak to an admin.
As far as this thread, keep it to name and mileage as requested in the first post, it's not that hard to understand.

It's looking like I've got one too. Broke this evening. Don't know for sure yet, but it happened just like others have described. Turned into my neighborhood, barely gave it some throttle, and it popped. Now it just sits and grinds. 32,000 miles.

#4 then 3rd gear went agian.

Mazda is calling it "Extreme Abuse" and they don't want to cover it as the transmission and LSD is around $6000. Later they decided to pay 1/3, the dealer pay 1/3, and the rest is up to me. . . I'm still fighting it. If you have tips for me, please PM. This is just one of LITERALLY dozens of issues I've had with this car and dealer.
Currently I have no MPS, no rental or courtesy car. Last Mazda I buy.

Wow. Thats impressive. The only 3rd gear breakings I have seen was Focus and I, and we were both well over 300+whp.

Thanks Sam, I wanted everyone to see what goes on when the diff breaks. There is alot of pieces that can damage your transmission. I got lucky, I thought the clutch had gone with mine. It still drove but it felt as the clutch was not holding any power it just spun, if I reved it to high it could just spin so I babied it to a gas station and had it towed to my house then in the morning I drove about a mile to a friends house (some guy in an integra tried to race me cause I had my e-lights going what a moron). You can see in the first pic all the pieces broken down from the diff, the rivets that need to be drilled off or grinded however you do it the 2nd pic is the inside of the diff and the gears, then the last pic I thought I would show the spot where it breaks (above of my broken finger) from the weld spots where it broke. Good Luck to everyone else I hope this doesn't happen to any other person. Sorry it got long.

Thanks for posting the pics. Now I can clearly see what is contributing to these failures. Two of the four places they welded have almost no meat to weld to! Check out the rounded indentions on the inside with the welds right on top of those areas.

I would like to know how many are 2003 LSds vs 2003.5 I heard they fixed the LSD is it true. Would like to see the year next to the blown ones. IF htey are all 2003 then that would be a major problem.

No, the 03 and 03.5 is the same. You heard wrong from whoever told you. All colors and years have had broken LSD's.

That is fucking scary!!...at onme point or another everyone is eventually going to need to replace the LSD.
i'm at 60000 and got my car at 51000...so i'm guessing my LSD has failed already, even tho it doesn't show up on any record....

But seriously...I try to be gentle on the LSD, but my worries lies when I go up my driveway I have to go in a steep angle and I can hear the LSD switching and grabbing.

Good luck trying to do that. All I can say is take your mods off before you go in. Make it back to stock and youll have an easier time trying to fight them. Please back on topic. i try to take care of the tranny alot... when i go over very uneven/rough roads, or take a driveway or entry way at an angle, i try to carry enough speed and take the car out of gear. that way, it's not engaged and can't mess up the LSD.

i bought my car at 24,000 miles, it was done right before i bought the car. the lsd failed at 28,033, exploded at 35,540, (transmission replaced) and the lsd gave out at 41,603. and the 5th gear synchro broke. now at 42,008 with a quaife diff, no problems yet,

My g*d, what the hell happened? Is this AFTER it was rebuilt or from a new LSD? I only pray that mine's stays strong for at least another 6 months or a year from now so I can recover from the couple of grand I just dumped into building up my engine. I've got 27,500 on my car now and I've already had to replace so much. I'm a hard working girl, but damn, if that happens, I dont want to get a second job or sell my plasma for a new LSD. :(
Sry for the lateness....I busted my stock lsd at around 15k miles and then had it replaced by a new unit ( under warrenty) by my dealer. I go to the drag races 2 times a month and also drive aggresively at times ( I love driving it ), so having my car well equiped with my mods I will have to stay away from the dealer and get a new one.... Which i plan on ordering one welded unit from Protege Garage on friday... Just treat it well and you won't have a problem...

I've been searching this broken diff subject for quite a while now and have not found the answer:
Does anyone know of a verified revised diff (no spring) being broken?
All the photos I've seen here and on other forums of broken MSP diffs have the spring (ie, pre-revision).
Any insight would be appreciated.

weld it... we can do it... but yeah.. if you weld it you will NOT break it... also, wheel hop is a big reason for them cracking... so take it easier on launches and they'll last.

To whomever is interested:
I just blew cylinder #4 and I will be bringing the car back to stock. On Oct 05, I blew the stock LSD. I had the trans rebuilt w./ a Quaife ATB LSD, then in March 06, second gear and both main shaft broke. So now I have a built trans. with a Quafie LSD and cryo-treated gears, main shafts, and syncros. I have spent a great deal to get it race ready, but now that the motor went I do not have the patience. I would like to know if anyone would be interested in the built trans? I have receipts, warranty cards, and RO receipts for all the work. If anyone is interested I will gladdly forward photos of everything.

Mine went in downtown Dallas. Just let the clutch out at a redlight, heard a small pop, and them vrrrrrmmmm the motor just free wheels no movment. I reved it up enough to get out of the road a bit and waited for the wrecker.
Mine went at 103,000 after 3 yrs+ of 12-15PSI daily.
Just random as hell how and when these LSD's decide to let go.

Nope not your fluid. Mine went at 103k miles all stock fluids.
The welds are just defective and I think all of them will break over time.

No you dufus! Meaning the gear oil was stock gear oil and not some fancy pants, overpriced, syncro-whats-its-fluid. Some people felt that the after market fluids were a contributing factor to their diffs failing. The fluid has nothing to do with it. These diffs have failed under various conditions varying numbers of miles, under all kinds of driving conditions, and with both kinds of MazdaSpeeds with both versions of the LSD.
I personally feel that all of them will break over time. In fact some people have had two of these diffs break within a fairly short amount of time.
I will either buy a Quaife, buy someone else's rewelded stocker, or have my LSD rewelded.

Danm thing failed while i was cruising in second gear at 30mph..i then floored it the car took off then, just heard the car go to redline... oh well now its time for the quaife and the new gears.

I've built 3 custom quaifes and a few engines before yet tearing into my own tranny scares the hell outta me.

just on the differential. you can replace the others if you choose for insurance like the release and pilot bearings. also, a few people have seen broken guide plates when they tear into their tranny.

TurfBurn sells a great kit and can give you a complete list of parts.
Do not be scared to take this tranny apart. It is cake.
One thing that will get you is if you have a case bolt seize and it snaps.
Little things like that or if the syncro comes apart and you do not know how to reassemble it. But all it all it was not too bad.

actually, my tranny whined for a while
hmm...i think that's a very good sign..prolly the LSD twist and having the gear at an angle makes the whining sound...

It is a non-Mazda diff :) It is a Tochigi Fuji Sangyo Super KK Torque Sensing Limited Slip Differential.
And it is a good unit in function just not in build :(

He said the one he is ordering is fully casted and can not be welded and should be better. Is this b.s or is this the diff that is in the 03.5 cars after they realized they screwed up.

Well mine never whined. I just gave it some gas and started to have a little fun and it started slipping. Thought it was the clutch at first but it went out way to fast. I drifted home but couln't get it out of my driveway. The one mazda is ordering he said is fully casted instead of two pieces pieced together which is where the weak point is. Anybody have any more info on this to help him sleep at night would be appreciated.

The diff can't be a solid piece by design. It has to have something inside like clutches or springs and cones in it. Doesn't sound like this guy knows what he's talkinmg about. From what I remember the newer diff just doesn't engage as hard so as to not put so much stress on itself.

Yes, I wish Mazda would have ordered a recall because I feel every MSP diff will eventually go. It is almost a guarantee with they way the ring gear is pressed/riveted onto the diff.
Make sure to get the new one welded or you will just go through this all over again :(

What a POS LSD design. I'm ordering the welded OEM MSP LSD as soon as the shop tells me what I'm 99% sure of. Worst part is I wasn't even driving it when it happened. It was our live-in nanny who was driving it (the only time I've ever let her drive my car) because my wife and I were in my wife's car and she needed to go somewhere:

Haven't torn it apart, but from reading previous threads since I've owned the car, I figured it would happen sooner or later. Just like so many others, just pulling away from a stoplight normally, and BAM!! Couldn't get any power to the ground. No $$ for Quaife, gotta TRY and come up w/ a welded one. And just so I'm clear, it's just the "housing" that is welded so it doesn't affect the functionality of the LSD, correct?

Hey guys, i just got my LSD welded last weekend, along with a new ACT clutch ,AWR front MM and redline tranny fluid (shockproof), and yooo...(boom06)
the ride is pulling like no other...im driving like i jus stole that shit all the time, it feels great! if anyone hasnt gotten theirs welded yet, PM me, i know a great shop with a lot of MSP experience who does a great job...the shop owner took pics of the welded LSD on his camera phone, so i have to try and walk him through sending them to me...

Here's how it happened to me. Pulling out of a gas station in 1st gear. made a slight right turn, straightened the wheel ~3000rpm, I punched it
*CRUNCH* I barely made it to my apt. Only mods are 10psi, cut box, and ghl dp.

I haven`t had warr for a long time ,it was voided for cai. That was the weak link of my car I just need to rebuilt the drivetrain to match engine power.I think I will get the bad ass axles and that qualife diff and a better clutch if I have enough $ $ $ $ .

True but still be interesting. I don't know how hard you have to beat on it to have it fail at less than 10k miles on it. I'd be proud of that.

i think the people with blown lsd with an average of 10 to 30k miles were from abuse. anything higher than that is considered normal wear and tear.
just my opinion. mines lasted 2 to 3x longer then some of the people here. so it all depends on how you drive the car to begin with.

i've found that in cold weather that the new one seems to stick locked a bit and the old one did not... when i say cold i mean like -10 deg f.

i did this a while ago. the average was about 29,000 miles. could have changed now that i see there are some higher mileage cars added to the list (mine included!).

you can add me to the list of blown lsd's 71,346 miles and 2 yrs of autocross and well over 200hp to the wheels. im actually surprised it lasted me this long....but thanx to it i got new clutch fidanza fw and a welded lsd and all new bearings.

mine went about two mounts ago and ive been waiting for mazda to confirm if it would be covered under warrenty , it went at 41,000 . Mazda is telling me that it wont be covered because of some aftermarket parts, has anyone else ran into this problem

To me, the money is gone, I have a working car now, and I'll never buy another Mazda after this.
If this were something that caused injuries, then I'd be all-in because then it adds a different weight to Mazda's inaction. Otherwise, the only injury it seems to have caused are dents in everyone's wallets.
Curious what the lawyer says though...

It's not really about the money it's more about mazda admiting they made a mistake and let it slide. I know I would have been spendin g money on other parts than to have to spend $2k on trans parts. I could have paid the car down and an intercooler or something I would have enjoyed.

Original spring loaded 1.5 years. I think I'm sticking a queefer in it next.
I'm out $600 either way with stock parts.
In addition, the time I have to spend taking it all out is worth $700. I'm going to say fuck it and go all out and have peace of mind I can actually drive the car hard without worrying it will snap in half like wood. Time is money.

No, it wasn't welded. It was dealer replaced back in 2004 after I went at it with the regional rep bitch. I'm out of 4 years now and I can do the work myself, just time is a factor now. sry for the late submission, mine went at 63k, replaced with welded lsd, beefed up tranny kit and new clutch. not to bad for 1800 bucks haha

well add me to the list, i think im at 47k real close to 48k. it went on my first run of autox today, i was so pissed. i co-drived my friends srt4 afterwards blah. oh well, guess ill be upgrading clutch/flywheel while im at it.

Sad to see another one go, but build it better & get it welded. GTO's are f'n awesome; guy smoked me as soon as he hit third, LS1's are the shit. Too bad there are 4 more in this town of 20K ppl. Would love to have that power, but for me, "no thanks." I have the only speed for 100+ miles, i'll take "slow" to have the uniqueness. I'll fix her whenever she breaks. :)

same reason why i don't want to get rid of mine.
the only closest person to have one near me is rush and some other guy 30 mins from me. i don't even know if he still has it, i heard he was gonna sell it.
