View Full Version : Yellow MSP bites the dust - Wear your seatbelt

I just crawled out of my MSP after flipping it upside down on my way home from work.
First: Thank you all who told me NOT to get a moonroof, especially Dr. Sound and his GF.
All I can say is there is a brief moment of clarity between hoping you don't get in an accident and realizing your going to get crunched. A Lexus IS 300? (Looks just like an MSP) was about a half a car length in front of me in the left lane of a 2 lane road and swerved in front of me to avoid something else, which he didn't, and when he came into my lane I slammed on my anti-lock breaks before our cars met and did a flip like they do on the A-Team onto the side of the road. If I had a passenger, he/she would have been seriously injured or worse but I was riding solo. The time between when I reacted to being at a complete stop upsidedown was a brief instant. My airbag did not deploy which is a good thing. My seatbelt saved my ass. Buckle up people. I walked away without a scratch.
Onlookers were amazed I came out of it uhnarmed. I was too. I will post more including pictures tomorrow. Unfortunately, I don't have any pics of it upsidedown.
Later People.

Glad to hear you're not hurt...that's the important thing. Despite how much we love our cars, it really is only a bunch of metal, plastic, glass, and rubber.
damn man. sorry. too much of this happening on this forum.
Take care of yourselves folkes, and while this may have not been his fault, we all go a little too fast sometimes so we're all guilty. Nice cars, nice people, I hate seeing this happen.
Good luck

Wow man... sorry to hear that, but I'm glad your ok. Scary shit...
Is yours the first yellow one? Are our cars prone to flipping easily? That is like the 3rd or 4th one that has flipped.

Half a car length? Isn't that only about eight feet? Hmm. That's a little close. You really should get used to allowing more space because of this very thing. Glad you lived.

The IS was in the left lane of 2. Sounded like he was in the right and the IS swerved into his lane. You are always out to call people out lol.

Thank you all for the nice thoughts.
I won't need a checkup, I'm really fine. I was only doing about 30 - 35 when it happened so it wasn't a high speed deal.
People at the scene were like, "I would never get that car if it flips over so easily" but I was thinking how it held up quite well without killing me, I literally don't have a scratch.
If the car is not totaled, I won't be driving it anymore. I can't imagine it not being totaled though. It would need a ton of body work, 4 new wheels, new windshield, doors, bla bla bla. Also, I'm not very sure how I would get it back to strip it for parts. Probably buy it back from the insurance company. Any suggestions are appreciated.
I would like to get another MSP but I'm not sure about how the whole insurance thing will work out yet, or if there are even any new MSP's left. I only paid off about half the car so I'll have to see what happens after I talk to my insurance agent. I might have pics late tonight or tomorrow.

Good luck and it's good to see your still doing well. Give it a few days. You don't have to rush to any decisions and your probably still a bit shell shocked (I know I would be). Try and take it easy and maybe relax a bit

flipped it at 35 mph, wtf? glad your ok, but that sounds a bit fishy, did you hit a curb or something? that car should not just flip at that speed and if it does, if i owned one i would be getting rid of it.
MazdaSP
05-11-2004, 01:49 AM
eh i hit a curb going about 40-50 mph sideways, i didnt flip rather hopped up on the curb, i really dont know what can cause our cars to flip anywho...

and im glad your ok man, sorry to hear about your car, but yea im pretty surprised what ive read our msp's can handle in wrecks,
mp5jeff
05-11-2004, 03:40 AM
yea i feel as if something is being left out of the story(hitting the breaks shouldn't flip a car), oh well glad no one died.
Crock
05-11-2004, 07:15 AM
I really don't know how the car flipped. It must be the angle of his car against mine, (cutting in to my lane) Also, the driver side wheel looks like it took the brunt of the impact and the front of the car looks like it took none. That explains why my airbag did not deploy. Pics are worth 1000 words. I'll have them around lunchtime.
There was a curb I flew over but it was on the other side of my car so I can't see how it would flip me. Also, the curb was a low one. I don't think I'm leaving anything out. Only so much story can fit into a fraction of a second. :)
Pics, soon I swear.

Glad to hear you're ok man. Those seatbelt thingys do amazing things when they're used :D . I hope to never check out the safety features of the MSP, but the safety features is one of the main reasons I stuck with Mazda after my MX-6 was toasted (check sig). Seatbelt bruise (raised too. Damn it hurt three days later), and road rash from my hand being knocked off the steering wheel and onto the door (airbag deploying).
Good luck with the insurance. Hopefully they're as nice to you as they were in my wreck.

It was not on RT. 1.
It was Hamburg Turnpike in Wayne.
I want to hear if it's totaled too. If it isn't there is going to be a ton of work done to it. I can't see how it isn't totaled. Either way I'm getting my fogs and my intermittent wiper switch back tomorrow.
Does anyone know how hard it would be to get my turbo timer out? Is it worth it? Should I cut the wires or what? I had someone install it for me so I'm not too knowledgeable about that. I had it mounted in the tray under the radio so I don't think i'll be able to get behind there to pull the wires far.

Damn dude!!! Unfortuneatly (kinda) an accident was how I went from a PR5 to a MSP. (nana) Gotta love the Protege's! My airbags didn't come out eather, at 45mph though. Got hit from the right front fender, tearing down the right side of my car, tearing off the bumper, and sent me into the opposite lanes faceing traffic. My reaction was to turn away from the on comeing cars which lead me turning off the road, hoping the side of the road, pushing the tires into the firewall. While my front end was in the air, as it came down, all I saw was a telephone pole, which I hit right in the middle front of my poor PR5, folding my hood up. I took my fog light out, they were still o.k. I'm taking my lip off soon and installing them.
