I've heard of a few people on this board having the same problem. I was wondering if it's only happening on the 03.5 msp's.

My first crack came when I left a strip mall (steep incline with a couple of people in the car), saw it crack as I went up the incline. Second one, happened Thurs last week, saw it crack as I made a hard left. Both times the dealer is replacing it.

Thanks,
Dave

oh... btw. Same exact location for both cracks. (nervous)

It's happening on all the MSPs and MP3s. Our windshields are pretty weak, and the combination of a very stiff suspension setup makes them crack all the time.

mine cracked back in decemeber on the passenger side about 3/4 the way up the glass and came from the edge.....dealer said it was a rock impact cus there was a lil chip less them a milimeter wide...i mean its tiny..and i found 5 more chips like that across the glass..anyway im gonna take it to a glass place to have them write a recommendation that it was caused by a rock so i can go to another dealer or write to mazda...i havent had time to do any of this though..it hasnt been spreadin that quick so hopefully soon

Is this crack in the same location? I think it is a stress crack but the dealer wont cover it because there is a tiny chip along it. They chip is so small the only way you can see it is when the light reflects off of it. BTW it happened over night.

same thing for me vassago..mine is so small the camera cant even pick it up....my crack is about 6 " higher and it slopes down instead of up..but its basiclaly the same.......real bs...like i said go to a glass place amd ask if they can verify in wiritng that it snot caused by a rock and take that with u to a dealer

btw what coberau are those :)...me like(thumb)

yeah, I think Im going to do that. All you have to do is look at the pic to see all the litle chips in my windshield. (lots of highway driving) If the crack was caused by a chip, my windshield would be cracked in a dozen places by now.

they just shurggled
I hate it when people shurggle!!! ;)

I had two windsheilds already. Both happened in the same general area (passenger side, near the top) and both happened over night in my garage. The first one was replaced under warranty but the second one had the tiniest little stone mark so they told me to shurggle off. (sorry but i am going to steal that word) :)

I can understand that, but if you or anybody else needs to pay, I used www.89glass.com (http://www.89glass.com) .They paid the first $100 of the windshield deductable so out of pocket was only $100. Not too bad, and they came to my work and did it here instead of me having to find the time to go there... Just an FYI.

I have a tiny stone "chip" along the line of my crack that the dealer says is responsible for the now 2 foot long crack.
2 different dealers saw it and said "oh, you have a stone chip, that's not a stress crack. The Protege has been using the same glass for years and there has never been an issue of stress cracks".
Their stories were so similar, i swear they were rehearsed.

i only tried the dealer i bought my msp from....the guy asked what i came in for and i told him abou tthe crack smoung other things and he gave me htis look and is like lemme go see it...walks over to the crack and looks really close to it like inch away and rubs it and says u got a rock impact right here...so im like what? so i get in really close and tilt my head and see the suoost cuase of my big ass crack and start laughin...im likt u cant even fell that small ass thing....how can that cause that....and i glanced a found another "rock impact" and asked y a crack wasnt at that location.....he just shurgged....they can deny work all they want.....stupid pricks

Same line that I got. You couldn't even see a chip or anything, but the service manager was there saying "It's right there. See it? well it's there... blah blah blah..." Long story short, I just paid for my own glass...

yeh im gonna fight with them as long as the crack doesnt touch another sid eof the glass lol and is unsafe to me.......i dont have or want to spend th emoney to fix it or get my insurance into it so they have a reason to rasie my rates.....so i guess ill see in a few weeks

I hear ya. I have yet to have the stress cracks (and it spent part of the winter in Montana and the other part in Denver), but I did get one hell of a crack from a rock. No ding, just a pit and an instant 18" of crack.

Just got my other windows tinted (that's 5hp right there correct? (rlaugh) ) and the owner has a P5 with a couple of stress cracks in it. He's telling me that not only is our glass stressed, but it's also soft (explains why my windshield looks like somebody took a 12 gauge to it). When he gets his new windshield put in, he's going to take some 4mil plastic (the stuff they use for the clear bras) and rim the windshield with it to provide some more strength and another barrier for rocks. I'm going to wait for him to try it before I think about it, but his reasoning seems sound.

I agree... this weak glass is bullshit, but at least the dealer here is alright with some things. Hell, got to test drive the Speed Miata when I was getting my oil changed. :D

I noticed that I have a very small but 12" long horizontal crack on my drivers side. At first I thought it was small strand of spider web but I can feel the gap. I know the dealer is going to give me crap since I have a rock chip that's 8" away. Should I even pursue this with my dealer or just pay the money and get a new window?

MSP#735
05-09-2004, 10:50 AM
exact same thing........should i pursue or not??? damn this crappy windshield! i did check into that 89glass.com...already thinking that im gonna have to pay....check it out..looks good to me. i think im still gonna go to ALL the local dealerships and bitch, who knows it could get me somewhere. never know until you try!!!

AAHHHH!

I'm curious as to whether or not a sunroof or moonroof would increase the odds of getting these stress cracks?

garretts77
05-09-2004, 02:14 PM
How did that work exactly? who are you insured by, what is your deductible and how did you find out how much your deductible was? I have a feeling i am going to have to pay for this myself...due to the freakin sand grain size 'chip' in the crack path.... any other info would be great!! THANKS!!!

MSP#735

I got this in my PM's but thought that others might be interested as well. Most insurance (in Cali anyways) have a different deductable for glass. I have heard that some states even require the ins companies to pay for windshield replacement. My comp/collision coverage deductable is $500, however my windshield deductable is $250. You will need to talk to your agent to find out what yours is, but I have been told that a windshield is not something that they can raise your rates over. It is not like it was an accident or caused by poor driving or anything that reflects negatively on you. A rock happened to hit your car while you were driving.
The winshield was about $250 installed at www.89glass.com (they came to my office to install it), but they pay the first $150 of the deductable. So for $100 out of my pocket I got a new windshield installed. I don't know if it was a sale that they had going on or if it their normal rate. There may be better deals than that around, but I have been pleased with the experience and wanted to share in case somebody else is in the same position.

My car is at the dealership right now getting it's 4th windshield. The first two times it cracked I just went through my insurance company, we have full glass in massachusetts. The last time I took it to the dealer and they tried to tell me it was a rock. I basically told them they were full of shit and there was no way they were not going to replace my windshield. 4 windshields in 8 months, what a joke.

I have nation wide. They replaced mine without a deductable at all. But i don't think i ever have to pay a deductable. I have a good driving record. And a really really discounted price. My mom knows my insurance agent. But the guy told me the window costs almost 500 bucks. When he replaced it. He said that he changes no shit almost 3 to 7 protege windows a week. He could've been bull shitting. But i dunno why he would. But my stress crack was in the exact same location as the picture shown earlier. And he said most of them are in the same spot. I know for a fact a rock hit my window. Just kinda funny it cracked there........I was doing 95 on a highway with a truck in front of me....the rock hit closer to the top of the windshield but it cracked in that spot? I dunno

Man, mine cracked on the passenger side right about 6 inches down from the top. I still have to take it in and have them replace it and do the flash. I also think i have a mild case of the clunk. I hope they treat me well!

Same thing here too. I just got in my car this morning and there is a crack. It wasnt there last night when I parked my car and it is at about the same place and it slopes down too. I would estimate it at 8-10 inches long. It sucks cause I had my windshield replace on my old MP3 and they did a shitty job I hope this time I find someone that does a good job.
