I was just wondering if anyone has thought to see if the Ford focus SVT 6 speed trans would work with our motor. Similar poewr & torque. SVT has AL block, we have cast iron. Just a quick thought I haven;t looked into much.

be a guinea pig and try a swap, it might be expensive, but you'll be the only one with a 6sp msp. (drool)

I know the ZX3 model Focus shares the G15M-R transmission with the Protege's... Hmm... Now I'm kind of curious! Do the ZX3 and SVT share blocks, or at least bolt patterns for the tranny? Hmmmmmm...

You looking at some serious custom work just to get it to mate up. Not to mention I believe the svt uses 2 different shafts on there tranny. In the end its probably not worth it to have another overdrive gear.

Hmm... By the looks of it, the Focus SVT does use the same block as the ZX3, so that's hopeful:

However, it DOES use twin layshafts, which is pretty cool, but I'm not sure what that means for a fabrication standpoint... Kind of makes me want to go to the Ford dealership to poke around at one to try and compare componant locations. =)

I beleive someone at one point was seriously considering doing it. I forget who, maybe Turbo Matty P but maybe not. Do a search and find out, because I remember a topic about it.

Wouldn't you lose your LSD though?

What does the limited slip DIFFERENTIAL have to do with the transmission?

nothing at all.

If it can't bolt up to the 6-speed tranny, then you would need to either take it out or replace it with a different one that does.

The higher gear ratio would be nice, but I'm not sure how they would match up to our lower redline. Nice thing is, their 6th gear is a 1.08:1 ratio meaning that it's high for an "overdrive" gear. The 5th in ours is around .735:1.

Not worth the effort - it results in 1 more shift where you're losing boost and have to rebuild boost again. Give me a 5-speed over a 6-speed in a turboed car any day.

everything.........the LSD is INSIDE the tranny......so if the case or shafts differ at all if will not work!!!!!!

hmm u sure....last time i checked th emore gears u have the more boost u can create...u have more room to work the gear ratios for better top end and acceleration....if 6spd was worst then 5spd, then y does a 911, gtr, supra, evo mr, sti and other top of the line models have them ?!?! (nervous)

Well, it really depends on the how the gears are ratio-ed I suppose. If the car is geared towards a true track vehicle then I can see it since the gearing gives you more flexibility. But for practical every-day driving, I'd prefer a 5 speed if it's got a turbo. Do the Evo and STi even have a 6-speed? I thought they were both 5-speeds.

The LanEvo is a five speed; The STi WRX is a 6 speed.

I read that SVT's gear ratios are kinda tall. You're toping a little over 60mph in second gear at redline. But that also depends on the tire size I guess. They do come with 17" though.

That's a little misleading due to it having a higher redline. We are just a little over 60mph in 2nd but we only rev to 6500. The SVT has revved to 7500 to reach 60mph. If that was on our cars, we would be shifting into 3rd way well below 60mph.

Gas mileage or extreme top speed. Also reduction in noise. While I love 6 speeds a 5 speed does pretty much the same thing. Ideally the first 5 speeds would be evenly spaced yet long enough to hit a steady boost level without having to shift everytime boost pressure steadied. The 6th gear would be the gas mileage gear or the top speed gear.
