Swapped out engine oil and tranny fluid last weekend for amsoil 2000 series and all is well exept for one thing. I am getting a lot of feedback from the tranny case area when I pull out of a driveway, in/out of parking spots, you know, basically anything that requires at least a o90 turn a slow speeds. Happens at all times during the day. Made the most noice I've heard leaving the movies last night at about 10:30.

I used 75w-90 2000series amsoil, 2.9qts. Checked to make sure the speed would take to it and I also had some recomendations to use it. The only thing I think that could be wrong is that I installed it incorectly(dunno) Pulled the fill plug first, pulled the drain plug and let it drain. Made sure it didin't sit too long. I filled it per spec and double and triple checked for leakage the next few days cuz I'm paronoid like that. When I filled the tranny I stuck the fill tube as far as I could go in about a o45 angle to make sure the fluid made it inside. Maybe it hasn't drained down properly. BTW, its not making a grinding noise but I can't descibe it. Sounds like a small electric motor or somthing. Any input would be hugely appreciated

So this coming from your transmission, not your power steering? I wonder if it's the LSD, I've heard all sorts of humming sounds now that I've installed one.

I was just thinking about p.s. fluid too, I'll have to check that. I'm at 19k on my speed. Could it be low by now?

Is it a humming noise when you cut the wheel to make turns? Well if thats what it is I havethe same problem. My car just started making the noise one day and hasnt stopped. I brought it to the dealer and they said they couldnt duplicate the sound so who knows what it is. I would really like to know though! I does sound like the power steering and my car only does it at low rpm turns like 1000to 1500rpm, if I turrn faster i cant hear it.

FYI, my tranny required substantially more than 2.9 quarts to fill it per the workshop manual procedure (more like 3.5 as I recall). Did you fill it until it was running out of the fill hole? Not sure if that could be your problem or not.

CRDMS1, I def didn't get any over flow, looks like I'll be picking up another quart of fluid. Do you own a manual? If so were there any other tips on filling?

yeah how much are we suposed to use? i used 3 quarts with no overflow (according to the manual) but every other car i've done it on the manual was dead on with it overflowing.

Our manual specifies 2.9quarts. But to follow the procedure of filling it til it starts to overflow requires more than 2.9 quarts. I would fill it up all the way and see if it helps.

I wonder if 2.9 quarts is what a regular protege requires and they just forgot to change that figure for the MSP...

just curious when and how often do we have to change our tranny fluid?

Depends on how hard and how often you load it. I typically change mine at the beginning of every track/autox season. Some do it more often...most do it less often. It's all about your own personal level of comfort in how you treat your car.

Don't know for sure how much (about 3.5 qts) or why it takes more. Just sharing my experience vs. what the shop manual procedure says. When in doubt, I defer to common sense.

Not sure if that's your problem, but it stuck out like a sore thumb in your original e-mail. I hope it works out for you.
