I've had the VTCS removed for several weeks now and everything is fine EXCEPT when the car is cold. It starts fine and idles fine when cold, but if I give it much gas at all, it stalls big time. It is a real pain to drive until it is completely warmed up. I have reset the ECU several times since the removal with no improvement. Has anyone else experienced this after removing the VTCS?

Maybe at the top end, but it is probably just my imagination... and I'm not sure it was worth the loss of drivability when the engine is cold. I may just end up putting it back on.

(lol) Haha, and Edwin comes in from obscurity and drops a zinger. So, twilight, you have no VTCS? I don't think I realized this, so you basically have an MP3 mani. I wonder if they're exactly the same.Hmmm, also have you made any moves on your mani plans?
So, back on topic, I wonder if the ECU pulls fuel when the VTCS butterflies are closed, so that when they're removed, the ECU doesn't know they're gone, thus leaning the mixture alot. EMS would fix this, if so. Also, I wonder if that's another difference in the MP3's ECU programming. Maybe Perf will see this and can shed some light.

Oh crap I have this same problem. I just found this thread.
viVid, did you ever figure this one out, or did you end up going back to normal? How did you do this in a reversible way? You only removed the valve plates and left the rod there? Do you have thermal spacers in addition to this modification? Did you port the intake manifold when you did this? I have been trying to figure this one out for a while but with no success.
BTW, I had been discussing this in the VTCS removal how-to thread, and I got a few suggestions, but haven't solved the problem yet.

I also started a new thread shortly before finding this one. No replies yet.

Well, it seems to have gone away for the most part. I didn't really do anything to try and fix it. When I took mine out, I just plugged the hold with a bolt and some sensor-safe silicone. If I wanted to put it all back, it would be no problem. I do have thermal spacers, but no port job. Come to think of it, I did port match the thermal spacers after my initial problem... maybe that helped (Outlaw Engineering wasn't even close).

Hey,
I've had the VTCS less manifold on for over a week now and I've had zero problems. Also, I've had the VTCS flappers in the open position for over 6 months by removing the vac. line from the solenoid. Maybe it has somothing to do with the EGR solenoid?

Dammit, I wish my problem would just magically go away too. Hehe, um, how long did it take?
Any suggestion or tests I could do if the problem is with the egr solenoid? I did have to remove it when I swapped manifolds. I hope I tightened the egr valve back on there good enough.
That egr tube was the biggest bitch t remove and reinstall, but I'm pretty sure it is on there snug now too.

Unfortunately, I don't have any tips for checking the EGR. I just removed the top portion of the intake manifold, because I have two intake manifolds. Then swapped the top portions out.
