I just got home from filling up the tank and the tripmeter clocked 409 miles and I was drove 58 miles since the light came on. The best thing though was that I still had a gallon of gas still in my tank! I love this car's gas mileage:cool: Been averaging right at about 30 MPG with mixed city/highway driving.

I'm curious to see how far I can take it before I really do run outta gas.

I am lucky to get 450km (280 miles) out of 50 litres of 89 octane. I have an auto. I drive with the fuel light on for a while as I want to get my 50 litre tank fill in one go, I'll check the distance next time it happens.

my gas gauge is the most innaccurate device ever...maybe like 100 miles just because its so goofy

55 miles on the freeway.

and when you fill up and it only says 13.5 that doesnt mean you have a gallon left, as you can still fill it up at least .5 gallons after the cutoff on the pump.

I try to fill up when gauge reads 1/4 full. Not sure it's a myth or not, but I've read somewhere that regularly running fuel down to the indicator light is harder on the fuel pump.

Never heard that one, but I always kept over a half-tank in winter (in Illinois) to prevent excess moisture in the tank (at least I think that is why...).

by running low you get all that crap from the buttom of your gas tank, also there isn't enough gas to cool down the pump.

If the fuel is drawn from the bottom then there should not be any crap left. If the fuel is not drawn from the bottom then how is it done?

for MY car, it's about 100km left to drive when the gas light comes on. i went about 95km one time and i filled up 53.5 Litres (55 Litre capacity). i wasn't too scared, cuz i knew how my car is on gas and i was regulating my speed to 100km/h

The "garbage from the bottom of the tank" reason is an old wives tail (or whatever the car enthusiast equivalent is.
The pump draws from the bottom, so its getting the gas from the same location whether empty or full. If it can't suck up gas then you are empty. The gas pump doesn't float to the top on a full tank.

Anyway, I run it to fuel light on everytime, mainly cos I want my Canadian Tire point multiplier at its best! (More power tools - I just picked up a Dewalt router on almost all Crappy Tire points). So I want my 50 litres dammit! Only the Canucks will get this...

Plus, given I go through a tank a week, how does the crap get time to accumulate?

even if there was 'garbage' at the bottom thats what a fuel filters for

I wouldn't push the 'run it out of gas' idea too hard. I understand that in-tank electric fuel pumps are cooled by the fuel running through them. Run them dry, and you burn up your expensive pump. Ouch.

Nobody is saying run out of gas, just run it until the empty light comes on. The fuel pump is cooled by the fuel running through it not the fact that it is submersed in fuel all the way to the top. I want to put 50l of gas at each fill up, so I ride around with the light on for a bit (as my light seems to come on at ~46-8l used.
