hey that's right sport fans, the headers are installed (was waiting to get them back from the coating place). still have the oem cat and back at the moment, but that should be fixed in the week after easter.
impressions are very good. gotta watch out for redline ;) pulls stronger all through the rev range. very happy indeed.
cant wait to get the rest of the exhaust done.
oope, ull love it :) - chris

according to dyno2003, this is the graph :
http://www.msprotege.com/members/twilightprotege/dyno2003graphs.jpg
the line without dots is now, the line with dots is before the header installed.

another thing too - i saved 6.5kg by changing to the awr headers. - that's 14.3lbs
gotta love that. more power and less weight!

is the p5 your daily commute? how are the noise levels?

very nice! almost have the money for my AWR header and the wagner midpipe w/ high flow cat..

is it me or is that dyno graph a little strange? don't dynomometer operators shut off at redline? i thought redline was 6.5K for our cars and fuel cut was at 7.2K? and those hp #'s are REALLY high. i want to know what the person did to get those #'s.

nice gains!! im curious about the noise level also. how is it?

noise is no problem. barely any increase with the stock cat and back. yep car is a daily driver
the dyno graph is computer generated, it's not a real dyno. also it's at the flywheel and from the old graph (one with the dots) it's pretty spot on to what i got on a real dyno (ie 150hp at the engine is around 111whp)

Sweet! Now get the exhaust done and get to a dyno!(whip)

i just booked in to get the rest of the exhaust done on 15 april :D
i'll be getting a dyno run done hopefully 30 april.

Great to hear. Can't wait to see the actual dyno from the self-appointed N/A guinea pig.

shhhh....you should see what dyno2003 reckons the power output will be from an almost open exhaust (i'm getting 2.5" mandrel bent - massive for an NA engine)

Headers? Did you drop a V8 in that thing?? j/k :) Did you have any fitment/install issues? I wimped out and got the Wagner n/a header... hopefully I'll have it in a week or so. I know it won't put out as much as the AWR, but at least I won't have to hassle with swapping it out every 2 years (damn DEQ!). Looking forward to your dyno...

isnt your sport20 awd? ouch for drivetrain loss

vivid - nah fitment was perfect (i have a manual) - and my original stuff which vaguely resembles an exhaust manifold (well so mazda thinks) is in the bin. damn heavy cast iron crap
hi-perf - nad it's sport_20 that has the sport20. mine is just like a normal P5.

lookin good. I just sent my exhaust cam to crower.... I am catching up :D
I think u might have some noise issues once u install the cat back. I would highly recommend dynamat for your trunk. Currently mine is so loud i cant always hear people while at certain higher rpms and it can drone on the highways. thats w/o a header.... basically the only reason i dont already have one. Definately tell us how the dyno goes... i am really excited. again good luck and thanks for taking the NA way.

Forreal!!! i hate the custom cat-back i have....it drones so loud on ther highway :( It was never really that loud till i installed the AWR header. But well worth it :D I should be getting the Greddy Catback soon, so hopefully it will kill that droning sound since the greddy adds a resonator.
Also TwilightProtege....i was thinking of getting a 2.5" catback, but dont you think it wont have enough back pressure? You may lose alot of power on the lower part of your gears.

I personally i would suggest 2.25" also... but with his setup 2.5" would be better for top end. I am sure his low end isnt amazing as it is but he also has adj. cam gears to fix that.

True.....i too am going N/A and running out of performance options. I really didnt want to break open the engine for performance, besides the cams I put in, but i may have too :( I guess i should stick with the 2.25".

the drone is the reason i'm going for two resonators + a silencer in the muffler.
also, the silencer in the muffler should give me all the backpressure i need <----advantage of having adjustable cam gears....i dont need back pressure :D
there are two reasons i'm going 2.5" all the way.
1) to show what an NA engine can produce in terms of power up high
2) why the hell not! hehehe. this is my fav reason!

Yeah i dont blame u. When i have the header installed i will add at least a resonator and plenty of dynamat to quiet it down. With your setup it should purrr low but growl up high. I cant wait for your dyno. I will be having one done after the exhaust cam.. and then another after the header. It will be nice to compare :D
But honestly my biggest desire in terms of engine performance is the phantom AEM by perfworks, I am going to see it on a stock protege tomorrow. Nick is claiming a 20whp gain just from that. We will soon see... and i may know more clearly where i am at. But if I dropped that on a decent NA setup i could see 30whp easily. And for $1.5k it isnt bad compared to the cost of a turbo. And the ems is something that could actually improve the reliability and drivability of a car vs. other large power items (turbo, nos,HC). I still think that u should get that twilight and i bet nick could help u out. imo

at the moment i'm just going to go for a unichip piggyback. it's only $350aud (2nd hand) + tuning.
but first on the list to do is the rest of the exhaust (15 april), then new tyres shortly after (i'm almost on slicks now), then getting the cams reworked and the intake manifold modded, then the unichip then i'll be laughing.

can someone please explain the dyno graph to me? i still don't get it. how does our engines rev to 8K rpms and how is the person get up to 170 whp with their mods on an NA application?
twilightprotege
04-03-2004, 08:53 PM
it's a computer generated what if. it's purely based on the information i put into the program. also, that is flywheel power too. the reason the graph goes to 8k is because that's what the program does. it predicts what power the engine will make at all rpm's. i can make it spit out a graph that shows the rpm up to 11000rpm if i wanted to, but lets face it, no point.
