Well i found someone who will give me what i owe on my mp3 +$750 so my dad said if i can find something for under $15k that i want mroe than the mp3 i can swap. My friend deals in used cars and thinks he can find me a MSP for under $15k. What's your guys thoughts on the matter? and what are the general first mods? first thing i was planning on doing is hard pipes. just fishing for feedback.

There are ALOT of nice cars for $15,000 or less. Might want to look outside of Mazdas just for grins. (LS1 camaro, Mustang, WRX, RSX-S, Prelude)

I think with some time, a decent WRX can be found in the bug-eyed body style for that price. The Prelude insurance was about the same as the LS1. Call and get some quotes :)

If they are selling new for 16.5, you should definately be able to find one used for under 15. For first mods, I would definately suggest turbo-back, Kartboy bushings, AWR motor mounts, Injen converted to SRI, & different springs...that's just what I would do.

If you can get a MSP under 15k I'd go for it depending upon how much you have invested into your Mp3. Also if you can get a MSP for under 15k I hate you because I paid close to 19k back in Feb '03. As for a first mod I've done a few and so far the best bang for the buck was my exhaust. It far and away gave me the most performance without altering boost. Hard pipes dont' really yield a real gain and would make more sense to hold out and incorperate a FMIC or SMIC. That and you would probably have to get them custom made considering only essential speed makes a kit for a big chunk of money.

you are not going to find any of those cars new for under 15. you can manage an msp for close to 15. go for the msp. as for what to do first check the sub sections. everyone has their own opinion of what to do first. safe bet is get plugs, guages, k&n drop in just to get started.

the reasoning behind the hard pipes was the whole heat sink thing, prolly get a good bov too.

hey tx here is a thread i started when i was an msp newb. http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28654&page=2&pp=15
that might answer some of your questions. also you should come out to some of the DFW meets and see what some others have done. my exhuast has been by far the best money i have spent so far.

Yikes, sorry to hear about those high insurance rates...:(

the key word was new. i agree some of those cars can be had at decent prices used. but a new msp for the same price is a pretty good deal. and insurance isn't too bad.....well if your over 25 and have a clean record that is.

The new mazda 3's are pretty damn cool! I didn't like them until the rev-it-up event. Have you looked into the Focus SVT's?

UGH, SVT is crap...the 2.3L Focus gets better times at the track with just a few mods. There is no reason to ever get an SVT over an MSP...they both are the same type of car, but the MSP just does it better.

off topic a bit, but did you all know that the guy who designed our car is now head of the svt devision? i know we all have issues with some of the design on the msp but lets be honest this guys did a pretty good job and i'm sure we will be doing much better things with svt. regardles i hate ford! :)

At this point you probably know enough about the msp to make an informed decision considering you are on the forum. You know your curent car and what you like about it, go drive the msp and see if it's worth it to you.
As for buying a used msp it might be hard to tell how the previous owner treated it but I would look at the tires and see how unevenly warn they are. If they are pretty warn you might consider asking about the previous owners repair record or if they will replace the worn tires (as the life span on the potenzas are a bit short if pushed or have seen lots of expressway miles).

I really didn't think the MSP was worth the price difference over my P5....

the amount of money i saved buying the p5 over the msp was well enough to get the hiboost turbo. Summer of 04, soon to be turboed :)
Jeff, good luck man, hope you stay with mazda's. RX-7 anyone?

i drove a MSP and really liked it, handles like my car (cept seemed a little more forgiving for some reason, prolly tires) . normally i think ABS is the spawn of satan but this was irving mazda's yellow test mule (u dallas guys know, the hail damaged one) so i tried a couple of "emergency" stops and liked how the abs is setup, kinda hard ot tell its there. i really want a 03.5 in lbm but i doubt i'll find one. prolly have to settle for a orange or black 03, anything but a yellow 03.5 lol (no offense to the yellow guys i just dont like yellow) talked to my dad about it and hes all for it, now all i need to do is find the MSP and im set. The MP3 will be getting a back to stock special peformed before i sell it, so whatever doesnt swap over to the MSP i'll be selling. (thumb) Also trying to sell my 1992 Z28 engine and 1991 Z28 so i'll have some more mod money. What kinda times are u guys running with say just intake/exhaust, short shifter, hard pipes, bov?
