Whistling Noise...

Hello, my brother has a Yellow 03.5 MSP and I'm not sure if this is normal or not but here's the issue. Sometime's when he is driving and gets past 4k RPM there is a whistling noise. It's not the turbo spoolin up, but it sounds like something coming possibly from the waste gate, any ideas? Like I said, sounds like a whistle. I never heard this noise when I had my Blue 03.5 MSP.

mine has done it since i got it, boost pressure is normal and car drives fine. When i get the noise my car seems to pull harder, i believe its just the sound of the turbo.

Does he have an intake? Because intakes magnify the spool-up sound..the whistling is much louder.

Hey! Mine started doing that recently as well. It started after I raced some guys, I took off and after 4k rpm there was a new higher pitched whistle, and the car had more power. I'm thinking maybe something with the wastegate opened up or closed up... the only mod I have is a k&N panel filter... 4500km

Even the K&N panel should increase the volume of the turbo spooling a bit.

mine whistles and im stock...its the spool up...i usally hear it pronouced around 4k and it fades away towards redline

i called a shop about that noise and the guy told me to check the turbine shaft for play, he said the compressor wheel could be rubbing the housing. i havent checked it yet, but i noticed i didnt have the problem today. (shrug)

I get this noise all the time, as do lots of folks, there have been several threads. No ill effects through 5,500 miles. I've not yet heard of any problem stemming from this noise on the board. The general opinion seems to be that it is a typical noise for a ball bearing turbo.

My P5(no boost, its stock) does that. I know exactly what you are talking about. Mine does it at 30-35mph and it gets louder if I take my foot off of the gas. Its not a high pitched sucking whistle (like an intake) but more like an human whistling.

if it's the same whistling/high pitched sound that i had then check your intercooler piping. there may be a leak in it. that's what the tech said was the cause of mine. they replaced it and it went away but now i have a diff sound. ./me shrugs

I get a high pitched whine, it souns "rougher" than a normal turbo spool up sound, but I think it's normal. Almost 10k miles so far and no bad effects, but I'll get them to look at it this week when I take it in for the E series bushings.

mine whistles, but only when im layin on the gas...is it a possability its the wastegate being open just enough to let off excess pressure, but the pressure is comming out so fast that it whistles?

When I'm at WOT before 4.5k rpms I hear the turbo spool. As soon as I reach 4,500 it sounds just like a dog whistle.
