I just purchased my Mazda 3 S last week and I love it! The only problem is the "new car smell" is making me feel a little sick when I drive. Has anyone else had this problem? How long before it goes away? Any comments?

new car smell are the odors from the plastics, welding, as well as other things in the car from when it was made.....it is basically a minimal toxic fumes that your are smelling......I had 1 vehicle it lasted 3 months so if you can drive with the windows down alot or the sunroof open.......

Wow! I have never had that problem in myn. Iv only had myn for about a week but the smell is actually kind of a nice new leather car smell. It doesnt seem to bother me at all??

I LOVE that new car smell. I'll miss it when it goes away. How do you maintain it a year and a half later!?

You could put armorall or anything like that on your dash and other plastic parts, if you have leather, you could put conditioner on the seats. Or just try some of that smelly crap you can spray in you car, or get in a can.

start smoking butts in there. It'll cover up the new car smell quick. If that doesnt work try cigars.
Just kidding. Do you park in a garage? If you do leave the windows down when its parked. Otherwise youll just have to wait

Just joking, when we lived in England my dad bought this little used car for the family to use, the smell used to make me and my little brother puke every time we got in it.

Canada3 describes it well where the new car smell comes from and it is something like 80% toxins. However, it's diluted enough that it's not bad to our long-term health (as in we'll breath much worser stuff throughout our lives). However, certain people will be more affected by it than others and making one sick or want to puke are common symptoms. Also, the chemical makeup of the smell will be different with different manufacturing plants and even when a manufacturer changes supplier for an interior component.
As someone mentioned, the best ways to get rid of it quickly is to open windows as much as possible.
As an aside, I had the opportunity to visit my dealer yesterday and to sit in my Mazda3 for the first time (taking delivery Apr 1, but it has arrived to the dealership). My dealership is great in that it has in underground to store the new cars and at this moment mine is down there with it's windows open (I want to get rid of the new car smell too).

Sorry to keep threadjacking but... I was over this girls house once and she had that. Going on. They had a 4 bay garage and the last bay was just a big steel plate on the floor. It was hooked up to a chain and winch. You just lowered it down and drove into the basement. They had a miata with basic mods, a Porsche 928, and a brand new (at the time) 3.0 Z3 that her mom got for valentines day. It was soooo cool.

Yeah, basically my dealer's building is similar to the underground parking lots at apartment buildings and so on (except the underground only has one level). Not only is it great for customers (cause my car is protected from the weather), but it's also great for the dealer in terms of security (the door into the underground is always locked and has video-cameras). The key to my car is in the ignition switch right now and the windows are rolled down!

anticipation killing you yet?
i've had my car for almost 2 weeks now and i love it! it handles great and the blue lights at night are the best! no complaints whatsoever!
i'm really impatient with the break-in period though. i really want to gun it at times but i have to hold back.(pissed)

Not really - I ordered this vehicle on Nov 22 or something like that - thus it's been half-a-year already, so a two more weeks is nothing. I was on a price plan anyways and I wanted a factory order (I specifically told them to get me as late a build date as possible), hence ordering so early made sense in my situation.

The gauge faces have the blue ring around them on S/GT models. Also I like the blue spot light on the shifter area.
Can wait to get mine on Friday hopefully.

I thought they were more of a silver/grey color than the blue.....oh well lol.....anyone know how to change the blue light that shines on to the auto-shifter?

We are both correct; it is a silver/gray ring when the headlights are off, but it turns to a blue lighted ring when the headlights are on - that is what I meant :D
Thanks for all the responses. I really enjoy the "new car smell", who wouldn't, but it does make me sick after driving for a while. It has gotten a little better. I'll try driving with the windows down as much as possible. I live in Oregon so I'll do it on the one day a month it doesn't rain :D
