some of you may remember a thread of mine a few weeks back concerning a 2-3 second-long scratchy screeching/squeeling sound coming from my engine after taking my msp up to the top of 3rd gear or so. i got the oil changed to mobil 1, and the noise seemed to have disappeared. then today, after 2 runs to the top of 3rd gear, i pull in the garage only to hear the same noise again! only this time it was louder and occurred more! it seems that after any movement in throttle, as just as the car drops below 1000 rpm's to idle, there is a 2-3 second-long screeching/squeeling possibly metal on metal sound coming from my engine. i cant pin point exactly where it's coming from. does anybody at all know what this is? it's TERRIBLE sounding!

Sounds like it's time for a trip to the stealership. Sorry.

Weird...I don't have the slightest clue what it could be...sounds like it's time for a warranty run

I had the EXACT same sound on my old MX-6. I ended up taking the turbo apart and it was the washer/seal type thing rubbing on my turbine wheel. It always happened at exactly 1300-1400 RPM.
From what you are desctibing, that seems like a perfect match.
Go to the dealer, NOW!

Thats wierd! Its good that your stock though so the dealer wont void your warranty!

i spose i do have a K&N drop in panel filter....but if they try to deny warranty work for that, i'm going to personally spank them.

no way they cant deny for having a filter! I went to the dealership with an intake and gauges and they didnt say anything. But then again my dealer is mad cool.

I say power steering or exhaust shield.

not power steering. wheels are straight when it does it. not exhaust shield. it's not a rattling. my dad said it sounded like something was hissing/letting out air (i.e. the bpv letting out air?) but i dont think so. i had him rev it up, i heard the bpv all the way down to idle i think. THEN the other noise came in. it's not the same.

when you turn the wheels at idle you don't hear the noise?

i have that same sound. does it happen when u idle u rev it to like 3k and let off and as it comes down it does it?

this has absolutely nothing to do with the wheels. they are not being turned when the noise occurs. it makes the noise after i drive it sportily. i park it in the garage and let it run and it makes the noise. no wheel turning.

i think im hearing that sound to i dunno, mine isent happening all the time, or as loud but it does sound like a screeching sound like the belts are hitting something as they spin, i dunno but i dont think mines serious, i bought my car from carmax, i still got the warrenty, will a dealer void for a Injen CAI or is Injen OEM certified?
i had that after a couple of hard runs. i was like wtf whenever i pulled into the driveway. but i turned off my car and turned it on again and it went away. revving up and down 'caused the sound to be apparent. so i'm guessing its the blades in the turbo contacting the housing.

YEAH!!! blades hitting housing.....is that healthy?

It happens here too, I dont believe its a bad thing, in only happens when the turbo slows way down. I believe that the blades have a minute amout of movement in the housing and when they spin they press inward. when they slow down they return to their resting position and make slight contact with the housing and this causes them not to just spin freely at idle. Not sure though just a guess, if you go to the dealership let me know what happened.

Yea, I'm bringing an old ass thread up. But I'm curious if anyone ever figured out what it is? I have the same problem, just as it reaches 1k at idle after blipping the accellerator.
EDIT: whoever moved the thread, thank you.

that's a bad turbo...
check the turbo and maybe rebuild

I'm gonna try listening to the turbo with a heater hose later today. I'll post back as to whether or not it was coming from the turbo housing. As of now its more prominent on the passenger side and almost sounds like the belts/pulleys and usually occurs on a hot day after a bit of driving.

Wasn't able to hear anything when I listened to various points on the turbo and around it. I'm replacing my EGR valve tomorrow and I plan on doing a boost leak test afterwards... might be a leak somewhere (atleast that's what i'd rather it be).

OR you could just take the compressor inlet hose off and have a look see. Takes 10 minutes tops.
