View Full Version : Irregular Idle?

Many times when I'm stopped at a light, or just stationary in 1st or neutral the idle seems to drop below the correct rpm and stalls slightly then pops up.
I suspected a dirty MAF, cleaned it no luck. Reset the ECU no luck. It does it with the AC on and off.
I had a similar problem with my old protege es as well. Anyone know if this can be damaging to the car or I should not worry about it.
Checked the AEM intake by the way, no air leaks or loose connections.

I had this same problem when i first installed my SR intake...It turned out that due to the location of the filter...the engine fan would come on ..and blow hot air directly onto the cone..which was why..i had problems..
Good Luck

As long as it's now damaging to the car, does not make a difference to me.

I had that same problem. Goldstar suggested that I check the purge solenoid. He was right on the money. Somehow, when I install the AEM intake, I disconnected the tube that goes from the thottle body to the purge solenoid. It was just hanging there, so check that...never know

As you know when you install the intake you move the purge solenoid which was near the throttle. Maybe moving this causes a kink in the hose which is why the idle problems happen. I'll try it in different positions today and see if there is any results. Maybe developing some kind of shield for the AEM like the Injen intake might help as well.

I had that problem for about a half week. It seemed to dissappear after a while though. It was pretty bad. I'd be idling at around 600 and then it'd drop to 200... stumble a bit.. then pick up back to 800... finally recovering to 600.
It's gone, I checked the hoses but there seemed to be no loose connections. Dealership couldn't reproduce the problem as per usual (but as soon as I drove off the lot... 25 blocks later.. it happenned again.)

Yep, checked all hoses all is fine. Seems to have dissapeared for now. When it happens my Air fuel ratio gauge goes all the way lean, then when it pops up it goes all the way rich. Seems the ECU is adjusting for something which it does not need to.
