I'm in also. I will buy it but I'm a little nervous about the warranty issue. I mean will this void anyones warranty for putting it in. I know 7hp is not much but who knows what the dealer will grab on to in order not to do warranty work. I would LOVE to get a supercharger, CAI, headers, blah blah, everything to make my Mazda 3 make M3's beg for mercy, but honestly it's a brand new car, mine dosen't even have 1000 miles on it yet. I don't want to get stuck paying $260 a month for a car with no warranty. Please give me your thoughts.

ok I just got off the phone with AEM. here's what they said;
1) they generally try to avoid group buys and prefer to sell directly through wholesellers, no special pricing etc.
2) the technician does not know if this part number applies to both engines. there is nothing in his computer telling him otherwise, so he either feels that it fits BOTH engines or just the 2.3 liter. the tech sounded surprised "you mean there are TWO different engines on the Mazda3?"
3) the technician didn't have access to the instructions on these intakes yet.
all of this leads me to question the ebay seller - a salesperson at my distributor led me to believe that direct reselling of AEM parts on ebay is a violation of thier vendor sales agreements so whoever is selling these intakes on ebay either has a F&F style hookup :) or is a vendor potentially violating thier agreement with AEM.
edit update - called Injen and got the run around from thier electronic operator :( sent them an email as well.

I'm going to call at the end of the week or on next monday to see if there is anyone else over at AEM i can talk to or if they have better information at that point. I wouldn't trust the guy on ebay - I'd like to shoot him an email and ask him some questions about what he is selling. According to the AEM tech and salesman however, this is for the 2.3 and was tested/being tested on a hatchback model (which comes with nothing but the 2.3)

Anyone know the difference between:
AEM Short Ram Intake and AEM Cold Air Intake ?
A cold air intake usually goes into the wheel well to get 'colder' air.
a short ram intake has less bends and usually stays in the engine bay. The dispute between which is better (colder air vs more direct airflow) still exists to this day.

Ahh thanks! I know what you mean. In a place like Canada where's there's snow, rain part of the year, wouldn't it be better to have the short ram intake so that you don't get nasty stuff going into the intake because it's higher in the engine bay?

Goldwing, I can guarantee we WILL have these intakes. There is no question on that. When and how many is up in the air. Our warehouse expects them mid-April, but they have the part number in thier system now and will take orders now for future fufillment. We will ship them of course on a first come first serve basis.
The reply I got from Injen is that their own intake is in the final development stages and will be available shortly.

Any dyno charts on the AEMs?
I'm coming from the Honda Civic world and I did a bunch of research on this before I got my AEM V1 intake for my old 97 Civic EX. First off, I can't believe how much they are charging for a V1 intake for the Mazda3. $250+ is a little ridiculous for a metal tube and a filter. They?ve already done the R&D and now it's just a matter of cutting to size and shape. Anyways?.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that the stock Mazda3 intake was drawing air from the front grille. This is already effectively "cold air" and not susceptible to the engine bay heat soak. So there goes that benefit. (I'm a poser. I still haven?t bought a Mazda3 yet due to financial reasons.)
The only other advantage of the V1 is that it provides some pressure wave resonance (sound) to help push the air into the intake. However, if you examine dyno charts of the cold air intakes on other cars, you'd see that resonance (and this jives with physics analysis) is only helpful for a short region, usually around the 5k rpm range (but depending upon your engine size.
This leads me to my other point. It?s not enough to just say "a 7 hp gain". You gotta look at the whole dyno to see where the gains and losses occur. If all the gains are at the top end only, it might be useless if that?s not your application. Just a warning to you guys. Make sure you know what you're getting into.
Don't get me wrong, I love the AEM V1 on my Civic, especially since the older Civic really does benefit from both cold air, resonance, and pipe diameter aspects. I'm just wondering if the modern Mazda3 is really going to get much out of it. Maybe it's better just to get a K&N stock filter replacement.
BTW, the bypass valve have been shown not to work unless you *completely submerge the filter in water*. It does nothing to a partially soaked filter that?s splattering water up the intake.

Well my best friend has a 2003 M3 and it's not as fast as you would think for 330 HP. He raced another friend with a 240 hp civic and it kicked his ass. And that was on a track so don't even say oh well one wasn't trying and the other was. It's a nice, overpriced car. I wouldn't get it.
