Just wondering how you would remove the stock shifter extension on the Protege 5 2003.
Thanks (dance)

torch the silver extension which melts the glue underneath and the sucker twists right off.

Don't you have to rethread the shifter if you do that so the knob can go back on?

yes you would, or you would have to get an aftermarket knob with the sidescrews

i did that by using channel locks and twisting the shittttttt out of it!!
use aftermarket knob with the side screws
better than spending money for a short shifter!

Little bit O' heat and it comes right off, cut the rubber off and put a nice aftermarket knob on. Easy enough to rethread it if needed.

did you all torch it off without taking the shifter out? or is that just dumb and dangerous?

what we did for my friends protege5 was remove the shifter, torch and remove the extension, hacksaw that length of shifter off of the remaining lever, and then regluing the extension back on the newly cut down lever. this way you don't have to rethread anything.

Do you guys know how to remove the shifter boot and all that in order to remove the extension... I just want to make sure I dont damage anything... It looks easy, but just want to know if you guys had problems doing so...
And can the stock shifter be easily reinstalled?

I took the console out, layed down a crappy jacket and was very careful with the torch. A heatgun would also work.

Go to: www.twmperformance.com (http://www.twmperformance.com)
There you will find instructions for removing a stock shifter and installing a short shifter. The instructions equally apply to reinstalling your stock shifter except for the heat shield modification. It's a fairly easy job but you will need lock ring pliers.

i see that some people experience more vibration and noise because the extension is not there to dampen it...and some don't really say anything. for the most part is there not much change in that aspect as the stock?

I replaced my sedan shifter (same as P5) with an MP3 shifter (same as MSD) which is about one inch shorter than stock (above the fulcrum) and has no rubber extension. I noticed neither an increase in vibration or noise.
Incidently, whatever shifter you use, stock, modified or aftermarket, definitely install the Kartboy shifter bushings for a more precise shifting feel. You'll be glad you did. They can be installed independently of the shift lever.

No noise or vibration with mine. Just feels notchier, more like a direct link to the tranny. Feels 100 times better.

ah thanks, glad to have that out of the way.
oh just one more thing, after torching, can you just pull on it with your hands (provided you've got heat resistant gloves or some protectant like that), or do you really need a vice grip or channel locks?

it twists off pretty easily when torched real well

I used vise grips, it came off easily, but I wanted to make sure I didn't drop it and damage my interior.
