I just wanted to ask you all if your MSP acts the same way as mine.

I've had two MSP's, the first one for 4800 miles and my current one that now has 3300 miles on it.

In both cars, when the engines warmed up the fan comes on occassionaly like it is supposed to. The keyword is "fan" in singular. If you are looking at the engine bay, only the fan to the right would come on. I never heard the fan on the left come on. This was consistent for both cars I've owned.

This Sunday I took out the MSP and when I pulled into the garage I heard a much louder sound. I popped the hood and both fans were on. They both go on for about 10-20 seconds then shut off. They turn on about every 50-60 seconds. It kept doing this until I shut it off.

I started the car again yesterday (the car was ice cold and had not been started in 4 days). As soon as it fired up the fans came on and continued with the same symptoms.

Is this normal? Doesn't seem right to me.

Should I reset my ECU to see if that helps? If so what is the exact process for that?

Thanks for any information!

Was your AC on both times? Most new cars kick on that second fan any time the ac compressor is engaged.

1 fan is for cooling the radiator/engine.

the 2nd one (on the right) is for the A/C. If you're ac was on (either in the foot selection / defrost, foot / or defrost ) or w/ the switch on ... this fan will kick on occasionally. If not that fan will not spin.

hope this helps

I don't know.... My fan nearest the coolant bottle kicks on quite a bit. The temperature is always fine - in the exact same area on the gauge, though.

Yeah Greg, that is the one that always used to come on, but not until the car was warm.

Now both come on, even if the car is ice cold. I turned the key for the ignition and the fans started spinning as well.

Wierd.

If it bothers you a lot, take it in. I know mine kicks on quite a bit b/c of the bumper to bumper traffic I go thru every day to and fro work.

You can look at it this way, at least they come on :D

Yep! This is exactly how my car works. One thing I will add to this is, if the blower selection is in the "0" position, the fan doesn't come on nearly as often. If it's in the 1, 2, or 3 position, it comes on about every minute or so. This really pisses me off at night, because it causes the lights to blink a bit.

I really don't understand why Mazda programmed the PCM to kick the fans on while the car is moving. They could have tapped off the VSS signal to eliminate this situation.
