We need a directory with some fun, twisty as hell roads to drive in your local areas. So if you know of any roads that are worthy of the MP3 tuned suspension, post them here! Be sure to include directions on how to get to them and the details about the length. I know of some posted on the site already...

There was a bad ass road between Copperas Cove and Gatesville that was very twisty and hilly too. But you have to watch out for the occasional tank crossing the road and the seldom cow standing in the road as you crest a hill at 100mph.

Which road? What is the designated name of the road? Thanks for your input.

I can't remember the name. I'll look it up on yahoo maps.

West Range Road, VERY TWISTY!

Dogtown Rd. in Magalia, CA. Doesn't look twisty on the map, but it is fierce. People have died there. No real tight hairpin-style stuff, slightly hilly and turns that have positive camber banking so you can really build up some speed and put it through the paces. Up in the foothils of No. CA.

Honey Run Rd. Paradise, CA. Almost single lane, super twisty, very scary with a huge cliff lining the entire length of it and lots of blind corners. Long too, runs all the way from Paradise, CA to Chico, CA. People have died here as well. My buddy was trying to run it in his Toyota 4X4 and rolled it off the cliff. He was fine, the truck was only a year new and a complete mess. He was lucky. I used to ride my mountain bike down this road in my younger and far stupider days. It's so twisty I even wrecked my bike on this road getting in over my head.

If I didn't ride motorcycles, I wouldn't have known, but Deals Gap, near Asheville, NC (I think) is supposed to be heaven on a bike, but not too sure about in a car.
In Indiana, we have Lots of GREAT roads. Highway 135 from Morgantown south, about 100 miles. Highways 150 & 450. Highway 44 from Franklin to Martinsville. Highway 252 from Martinsville to Morgantown. All good stuff!

If you're ever in the area you MUST drive on Route 5 between Williamsburg, VA and Richmond VA. there's a 30 to 40 mile stretch with the more twists than a helix. it's lined with trees on both sides so it's really picturesque in the fall - i almost ran off the road once. it's fun to drive these turns fast while scattering the leaves that have fallen. Also Rt 20 heading east from Charlottesville, VA but that stretch is only about 10 miles long but some very mean turns make it worth it - lots of yellow signs

seems to me....if there were enough interest in this....we could get a whole new forum just to post locations of roads that meet this criteria......that way everyone from all over could post their favorite piece of road to run...whether its in their area or not....

Personally I have had to pleasure to drive through most of the lower 48...and unfortunately it wasn't in my P-5.....but I remember those roads very very well....well this last summer I did get to run some of those roads in my p5....but I have a list as long as my arm of beautiful, scenic, twisties all over the country....

the OTHER board did exactly this.....put up a specific forum just to put up favorite scenic and twisities to run.

Its worth a thought.

(stash)

Sir Nuke

Highway 7, which runs north and south up through central Arkansas and the Ozark mountains.

pick any road in the southwest portion of South Dakota.....around the Rapid City/Sturgis area.....awsome scenery!

in the event you havn't figured it out....there isn't much of this country I haven't driven in.....there are only a few states, 9 to be exact, that I have not driven in.....and yes that includes Alaska and Hawaii (been there).....one of the advantages of being in the military...you get to see a lot of places. :{D

Sir Nuke
12-16-2002, 03:21 PM
There are two roads in this great country that EVERYONE should have the opportunity to drive in either their favorite car...or on a motorcycle...and they are..

Highway 101 in California and Oregon.....I drove it from Florance Oregon all the way down to Novato California, which is just north of San Francisco.

the SECOND is of course...the ENTIRE length of the BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAIN PARKWAY.

Sir Nuke
12-16-2002, 03:24 PM
if you ever find yourself in Upstate New York...and are headed to Boston or that general area...then follow this road....don't use 90 to cross Mass......just before you get to Troy Ny, take highway 7 east towards Bennington, then get on highway 9 in bennington, this will take you all the way to Keen New Hampshire where you get on highway 101 and that will take you all the way to Nashua, where you can get on State Highway 3 and take you into Boston....beleive it or not....its not any slower to go this way...as my sis in law lives just north of Boston in New Hampshire and we USE to go across the state on 90....but the last two years we went the other way....the time was nearly the same...but the roads are SO MUCH FUN to drive on in the Pro......nice twisty roads.....LOTS of fun.

and of course if you are in the Boston area and headed to upstate NY...just reverse the directions... (stash)

DEALS GAP is AWSOME on a bike or in a car. One of the reasons I love living in NC. 300+ turns in 11 miles Here is the link for anyone who is unfamiliar with the DRAGON

www.dealsgap.com

I have been down it on several bikes and in a miata, s 2000, my lightning, and my P5. I am not sure which was best because I couldn't get my heart out of my throat and keep my eyes from bugging out of my head on any run. For real though it is awesome definately worth the trip. Really makes me wish I still had my bike.

ONE more....for now.....

Mulholland Drive in LA, California for those of you that don't know what or where it is...its a beautiful canyon road.....commonly refered to as Mulholland Raceway.... (stash)

I wish I still had a card a buddy gave me many years ago when I was in LA visiting...it was a invitation to Mulholland Raceway.....which was a streach of the road that they use to use to race on. the road was awsome. LOTS of twisties.....not for the faint of heart...that was for sure.

Time to update the "twisties" directory. If anyone is ever cruising through Montana/Idaho you must check out Hwy 12. It's about 10 minutes from my
front door and is a real life rollercoaster. Speed limit 75. (drive)

w3rd. the dragon (really, any road in that area) is sweetness. IMO, one of the most beautiful parts of the country. i was there w/ NASIOC subaru people in the ES a few years ago...good times. definitely do not miss the Cherohala Skyway either.

i think it depends on when you go. i saw 1 police car the entire 5 days i was there, and it wasn't anywhere near the Dragon. the dragon is quite an experience, but basically every road in that area is incredible.

it was really refreshing to spend time driving the roads, rather than the speed limits (which are pretty generous for the most part).

I just drove the coastal Highway 1 southbound in California last week. That road was also awesome. I saw a sign like the one below that said "Next 74 Miles"! That was the best drive of my life, with the sea right there!

I never saw this thread before... Nice...

From Davis, head out 128 toward Napa Valley. It pulls around lake Berryessa and splits into 128 to the north and 121 to the south. Both of these are nice but 121 is pretty intense in places...

pisgah highway is fun as hell too if you're in NC, always see bikes on that road, can't go fast on the parkway (big no no), but i don't see any speed limit signs on 151 (heh), till you get closer to Candler at least.

I live there too, so it's my favorite spot to go after work to get the knuckles white. Really tight and TWISTY.

Palomar mountain is good stuff...

My route when I live in San Diego was out the 8 and go up to Julian, then west towards ramona until I got to 76 then up to mesa grande to Palomar mountain, then back to 76. At that point it has been about 2 solid hours of tire melting, and you can either head down 76 to 15, or do it again backwards...

Going out East past Julian is fun too. So is Japatul Valley...

There are some awesome roads down there. There are great ones here too though. Can't wait for summer so I can go up into the foothills...

Taconic State Pkwy, NY. Nice, just 1/2 hr north of NYC. Be careful, though, esp. when wet! Just leave it on auto, and on the down grades, the tranny does a pretty good job of holding the gears, but sometimes it thinks its too smart when going uphill, and does not want to upshift at all, so manual on uphill works good if ur good w/ gearing ratios.

plus there are the 3 sisters out west. i think its county roads 335, 336, and 337. beautiful scenery, and a nice 50+ mile loop of nothing but curvy roads. not near as tight and techinal as lcr, but fun none the less. just gotta watch out for bikers

Hwy 666 in Arizona. A sheer drop on one side, cliff wall on the other with very few guard rails, just a superbly windy road!

Hwy 150 in Colorado, mountainous, windy, switchbacks and snow on the hillsides most of the year.

I run a "Deals Gap DragonSlayer" plate frame on the MSP6, transferred from my old MZ3 Hatch, which my son & I ran the road in. I can attest, its great fun in a car. Watch out for bikers, the cruisers run it pretty slow.

(1) Montegomery/Roanoke Co. VA

Start: North Main St. (Blacksburg, VA)
Right onto Mt. Tabor Rd.
Right onto Rt. 311 to Blacksburg Rd.
Right onto North Main St.
Repeat

This is what us CCVT (Car Club of Virginia Tech.) members like to call "Taborgring"

(2) Montegomery/Giles/Roanoke Co. VA

Start: Rt. 42 (just off of 460 W just past VT near Giles/Montegomery Co. line)
Left onto State Road 658
Right onto Rt. 311
Right onto Rt. 42
Repeat

658 is rediculous - 1-1/2 lanes, no traffic, insane turns. Enough said.

(3) Montegomery/Roanoke Co. VA/Somewhere in WV
Start: see first step in (1)
Left onto Rt. 311
Continue straight until board/in WV
Turn around and do it in reverse

311 towards WV is a good mountain climb (two of them) each way. Definitely have to watch the breaks - mine have been smoking on more than one instance

(4) Montegomery/Giles/Roanoke Co. VA
Start: see first step in (2)
Continue straight on Rt. 42 until you hit 311
Turn around and do it in reverse

Very good high speed road. Few very sharp turns but enough banks and bends to still remain fun. I've hit well over 100 mph on this road and several CCVT members with Corettes have seen upwards of 160+ mph.

Just my donation. Most of these roads seldom see police. I have only seen police in one spot on 311, at a town (so you have to slow down anyway) however I've heard reports that police have been cited and seen giving tickets on 42.

People are more than welcome to check these out on Google Maps: zip 24060. You might have to zoom in quite a bit to see some of these roads.

If anyone is ever in town, let me know and we could take a little "cruise".

This should become a sub-forum...if there is enough interest. It would be great info to have!
Do it! and then split it for different regions of the country (through different threads)

I just drove the coastal Highway 1 southbound in California last week. That road was also awesome. I saw a sign like the one below that said "Next 74 Miles"! That was the best drive of my life, with the sea right there!

I made my passengers motion-sick!

I think this may be the sign you're thinking of:

Great road! Highway 1 from Carmel to Big Sur is one of the best roads on the planet, especially on a bike.

Here is a direct link to the route I took to the cabin/cottage we rented in the mountains (includes the Talimena Scenic Byway/Drive):

Click Me (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=Plano,+TX&daddr=US-271+%4034.797020,+-94.954240+to:OK-1+%4034.692640,+-94.522930+to:34.591389,-94.242096+to:CR-42+%4034.533540,+-94.236050&mrcr=2,3&mrsp=3&sz=11&mra=dme&sll=34.579518,-94.414444&sspn=0.279843,0.697632&ie=UTF8&ll=33.934245,-95.707397&spn=2.255853,5.581055&t=h&z=8&om=1)

It says 261 miles, 5 hours and 53 minutes, from Plano, TX. I did the drive in about 5 hours, from Euless, TX and that's with stops!

Here is a direct link to what the Talimena Scenic Drive looks like: Click Me (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=US-271+%4034.797020,+-94.954240&daddr=OK-1+%4034.692640,+-94.522930+to:AR-88+%4034.591920,+-94.241500+to:CR-42+%4034.533540,+-94.236050&mra=mr&sll=33.173192,-96.4888&sspn=0.568984,1.395264&ie=UTF8&ll=34.68404,-94.571686&spn=0.558979,1.395264&t=h&z=10&om=1)

It starts in Talihina, OK and ends in Mena, AR.

okay, since i'm always talkin about my canyon races and countless drives on sick Utah roads. i guess i better post up some of these EPIC canyons/roads ;).

first: little cottonwood canyon :)

from the 'park and ride' at the bottom(mouth) of the canyon to Alta Ski Resort(the highest resort, but not the top) is about 9-10 miles long.

it climbs from 5340ft above sea level to 8750ft above sea level. THATS A 3410 FOOT HILL CLIMB! and thats only to alta, keep going and you will be above 10,000. i usually stop at Alta in my speed6, but sometimes go beyond the pavement(depending what i'm driving) to a cliff top view i enjoy at 9380ft where i let my car cool down.

the road is well maintained year round, due to Utah's obsession with the outdoors. in the winter it can get ugly despite the plow-truck drivers hardest efforts. its generally always open, i say generally because it does get shut down when the road becomes impassable due to heavy snow, avalanche dangers, etc. i do most my spirited driving in the warmer seasons just to be safe. especially in the canyons, be safe(first).

very twisty, very fun, unbeatable views, and this is my home ;) i drive this path literally daily. (glare)

p.s. may post link to video of canyon run, assuming someone may be interested..or at least find it entertaining!

big cottonwood soon!
