I have a 99 ES and my trunk lid won't open. I tried opening it inside with the lever, outside with a key, and inside the trunk to no avail. Any ideas? Nothing in the manual.

It sounds to me like the lock rod has come off of the latch mechanism. You will need to go intothe trunk throught he rear seats and prob take the cover off of the latch assbly. and manually operate it.It should not be hard to figure out.Our trunks are easy to get at since their is no cover. You should be able to figure it out pretty easily once you get in there with a flashlight.Once you get it open you can inspect it and figure out where the lock rod came unclipped at or broke or both and then proceed to repair it or take it to the dealer.

I just went and looked at the spare trunk lid i have lying up in my room and you should be able to pull the lock rod from the left side of the latch easily. If it has come off inside the latch Assbly. then you will need a phillips screwdriver to take out the single cover screw and get in there to release it.There is also another way to do it.There is a little plastic piece that sticks out below the lock rod that will also release the trunk latch if you can get at it.bottom left of the latch looking at it.Push it toward the latch assbly. this should open it.
Hope this all helps

do you carry salt in your trunk, cause maybe your lock mechanism is seized/rusted...it happened to one of my teachers miata's, she kept salt in the trunk, to give her traction, and eventually the moisture cause the salt to evaporate into the air, rusting shit up.
