I have a 2001 ES sedan with the rear spoiler. I can't get a universal rear bike rack do to the spoiler, but was wondering if any one had a roof rack they never use and want to sell.(band2)

FYI. Trunk mount racks do fit your car. I have a Saris Guardian 3 which clears my MSP wing easily. I know Thule makes one as well.

The Yakima Steelhead (top mount) works great. It gets noisy of 40 mph though. I use my friends bike rack, and just bought separate inserts for the Q towers, so it attaches to the Protege properly, no we can interchange who has to drive. He has a WRX, so you might want to check message boards for other cars about our size as well.

I have a Thule set-up with two (2) Velo-Vise bike mounts and a deflector shield. The foot pack is for a 99 Civic sedan, but all the pieces will work if you get a new fit kit. Send me a PM if your interested.

The only rack that local shops sell are Yakimah (Spelling?). I think my factory spoiler is not as high up as the MSPs so maybe I will luck out! (thumb)
I put on a Hidden Hitch and use a 1 1/4" hitch-mount rack. Works like a charm and NOTHING touches my paint.
A stock Barrecrafters roof rack (Performance house brand now) works as well, need foot kit 287 IIRC.
The bike is my 'cross/commuter rig... not my main squeeze, but a good foul weather substitute...

Hey that hitch looks great. I suggest going with the hitch as well if you carry your bike around alot over the trunk mounting one. the trunk one works fine if you are just looking for a cheaper solution. i got the yakima little joe and it fits over the ES spoiler.

How much do those run? A girl here at work is giving me a used trunk rack that was on her Civic for free, but if it doesn't work, the hitch isn't a bad idea. Can you tow a boat with it too? Just kidding of course!! I did once see a Jetta at a boatlanding pulling a pretty good size boat (17 footer or so). The tires were spinning on the ramp. What an idiot!

What model is that? Did you buy it all in a kit or did you have to get the hitch and carrier seperate?

I have a thule rack that I used on my sedan when I owned it last year. I have the feet, protege fit kit, load bars, fairing and locks. It fits the sedan perfectly. All you need is the bike trays/kits to attach to the rack. It is in almost perfect condition. Used it a couple times to carry my bikes and kayaks in summer 02'. Make an offer including shipping from MA if you would like it. Can get pics if you would like.

Hitch and carrier were separate, hitch was about an hour to install and (from JC Whitney) like $120 shipped. Rack was just a generic 1 1/4" mount bike rack with room for 4 bikes, on year-end closeout something around $100. Works for me, but I still throw the old roof rack on sometimes when I want people to see the Kestrel fly by... roof racks are cooler, but they put the bike up in the air, in the bugs, and scratch the roof paint. Still something about them looks better.
