>>Second GB. Updated Apr 24<<
People in the second GB, I am preparing to have this get setup as the exhausts can't be too far away now! :)
PRODUCT DETAILS:
This system is custom made for MSP/MP3/Sedan (NOT P5) and uses all stock hangars, etc! Here is what Corksport says: The 'Power Series' Exhaust System is constructed of 61mm (2.4") mandrel bent T304 polished stainless steel. This is more than a cat-back system, due to the cat location it is longer than most systems (3 pieces as seen in picture). It does eliminate the second cat on the 2001- cars, and eliminates both cats on the Mazdaspeed versions. The Power Series system also weighs 20lbs less than the stock system. The 4" tip looks aggressive, yet not over the top. Removing OEM catalysts is not legal and thus this system is sold for race use. Built in resonator creating a quality, not buzzy sound.
PAYMENT DETAILS:
Usually corksport simply mails all the products to one person and they take care of it, but with exhausts, and the fact i dont want to be stuck in the middle, corksport will take care of this. The special GB price will be a promotional code for their site for a time window to be specified with your GB. After this, its normal price again. Shipping will run $25-$40 depending on where you live. They ship via FedEx ground, and can only ship to the Credit Card billing address.
PRICE: $330 plus shipping (NORMAL PRICE IS $389.00!!)
NOTE: Installed on the MSP this exhaust will indeed throw a CEL, but they are developing and eliminator, otherwise there are several other elimiators available now for CEL removal.

I'll bite. Although for the piping your getting it seems too good to be true. Plus corksport has a short history for selling things they don't have in inventory. If I was in this I would cautiously want to know it was in stock and would ship out at specified time. I would assume the GB price depending on numbers should be notably less (like free shipping or better).

For clarification, it will remove the second cat only on the p5?
Is this good enough to pass emissions? I understand its not legal (on paper) to remove 2nd cat, but emissions can be passed with only the primary if you leave the car running...correct?

I'm interested. I'm looking to buy an exhaust system VERY soon. I do have one question: Is the entire system fully polished like the picture? Also, I'm assuming that the 2.4" measurement is the inner diameter of the tubing (seems like common sense, but, I've seen different companies list different things (bang) ) I'd be up for $330. Keep us posted.
pdhaudio83
03-05-2004, 12:44 AM
ok- ION style.. :)
Albert- no. the silencer is not installed in those pics. you'd be able to see something in the tip.
milmoejoe- correct. The first cat is in the manifold. It will only remove the bottom cat. It will not throw a CEL as there is no sensor in the second cat. I'm not sure beyond that of VA emissions.
micaguy- the entire system IS as pictured. Yes, polished. Yes the 2.4" is the inner diameter. Are you in for $389? (I have yet to get a GB price. but want to be open)
Thank you for the interest!
I will not assume you are in unless you edit your name into the list. Remember if you'd like a silencer IF available at discount write that behind your name. ALSO if you have a P5, write that too, as there is a wait for the P5 edition, and the P5 system is SHORTER.

there is no o2 sensor on the 2nd cat...

Although for the piping your getting it seems too good to be true.
Have you looked at the prices of the other exhaust systems they make? And the strut bar's price and how that compares to other companies? :)
You pay for a lot for the name and research time with other companies, they also have a big mark up.

The only problem I see with this exhaust is that you can't put a bigger downpipe on. But it looks so nice. I'm so close to jumping on this one, but I really wanted to get a 2.5" DP with no cats....hmmm what to do what to do.....????

I'm so close to jumping on this one, but I really wanted to get a 2.5" DP with no cats....hmmm what to do what to do.....????For the cost it's not even a comparison IMO. You don't get the brand name catback or can but you get the plumbing from the S-pipe back for about the price of the apex midpipe. Yes it would limit you to increasing the size of your midpipe but unless you are looking for more than 10-12psi most would agree the size is ample for the MSP.

Heathen: This kit doesn't replace the acutal downpipe but If I'm not replacing the S pipe then what is replacing the DP going to do other then get rid of my CATS right. I mean fooo realll yooooo..... Also, I am going to be boosting over 12 psi, somewhere near 15psi when I'm done. I'm going to be getting the JE pistons and peuter rods this summer. So anything I buy now needs to be able to work with these laters....know what I meanzzzz...... So let me know what you think...

I follow. This may not be the package for you. However we are having a clash of vocabulary because to me calling the test pipe/ mid pipe a downpipe is kinda weird. A downpipe in most cars is the piece that actually goes DOWN. In our cars for some reason people got the name downpipe confused with the testpipe/midpipe that houses the cats. I call apex's downpipe a midpipe because that's what it is (wink)
This set up on the MSP removes both Cats and basically connects where Apex's "downpipe" would attach. If you look at both the corksport page and the apex site you can see what I mean. The difference being this removes your stock catback and makes the piping 2.4 all the way back. That's the only benifit over getting this as opposed to the Apex piece.
Like I said, depending upon who you asked 3" is unnecessary in our application but if you plan to go to a rather high-boost set up you may want to weigh your options. To me the bang for the buck of the corksport is impressive considering I feel the Apex offering is even a good one for just the mid around $300+ship. To me this combines cost effectiveness with convinience. A one stop shop that removes both cats, free flowing out the back end, but doesn't sound like a harley.
Sorry for the long post!

pat or anyone else: i thought the exhaust was supposed to have a flex section in the piping somewhere. won't the lack of the flex section cause a problem (no compensation for engine flex in the exhaust pipe)?
forgive me for my ignorance when it comes to exhaust systems.
hopefully i can get on this before it is over. damn income tax check.

unwound, there are several members that have the same setup already installed, running fine. I don't see any problems. Also, for 15, I'm not sure. To be honest, I never expected 15 to be in on this. 15 people ready and willing to pay for an exhaust is incredible, but so is this price. I'll check on that.
Also, the GB hopefully will be done soon. I'd like to get mine soon :) you'd be able to pay in a two or three week time period starting soon. After the three week time period, no more GB pricing for a long while as they get caught back up.
People, I'd jump on this, do you know how big of a deal this is? normally, HKS wants 330 JUST for a rear section or something. Not only do you get that, but mid pipes too!! polished, the works.

pat, thanks for helping to clear the flexing issue up. corksport knows what they are doing and other members are running them already, that is good enough for me.Actually, this exhaust doesn't need a flex because of where it connects. Look at your stocker, it doesn't have a flex because it's connected to a round shape gasket kind of like =)= that so it rotates or flexes or plays in that area, it is also connected with the stock sping bolts allowing to move around in that area. Kind of hard to explain without a picture.
It's the downpipes like apexi where they bolt up to the s-bend flange and have to play in them, that's why they need flexes. Look in the pic where the spring bolts are. It's actually better then having a flex, IMO.

as i said earlier, there are several MIL eliminators available! :)One small point... the Corksport exhaust does not come with an O2 sensor bung. The MIL eliminators that are available require the O2 to remain intact and in the exhaust stream. It MIGHT work with the O2 sensor just hanging there, but I personally do not know.
I am currently working on a fix for this, because I do not wish to drill a hole and weld a bung onto my lovely exhaust.
That said, I do like my Corksport exhaust very much.

Others with this exhaust have not mentioned this issue. Even ViksMSP (who I pmed and was very helpful to me) said the MIL fix was easy as can be with this exhaust. How did others avoid the problem when not having a new bung for the o2?

You don't need one in the exhaust...
Let me get some things cleared up here first....
Midpipe (sometimes called a test pipe, only God knows why): replaces main cat. Generally under the shifter area on FWD cars.
Downpipe: bolts between turbocharger and main cat (or to midpipe in the case you have removed the main cat.). Sometimes removes the precat (like on RX-7's. Both FC and FD) The stock downpipe on the MSP is two pieces. The 'S' pipe and the one that bolts to that to the cat section. Both those pipes together are the downpipe. It is not an 'S Pipe' and a 'downpipe'.... Just a downpipe.
The pipe that bolts to the 'S' pipe is the SAME piece used on the non turbo cars. There is an O2 bung built into that from the factory. That is where the 02 sensor mounts. They just have a plug in it on the MSP models. You just remove the plug and put the 02 sensor there. So no, I repleat, no the 02 sensor is NOT removed. It's just put in the location where the NA models have it. :)
I was actually the guy who found out this system fits the MSP. This system was orginally designed for the non turbo models. I put it on my MSP with NO issues.
As for not being able to replace the downpipe portion of the exhaust..... Cork Sport will be coming out with their OWN downpipe. It will bolt between the turbocharger and the exhaust system. Yes, the downpipe will have an 02 bung built in to it also.
I hope I cleared some things up here... If you have any other questions please PM me, since this thread is for the BB and all. :) (I hope I made sense in my post... it's early Saturday morning and I'm sitting in class :-X)

i just want to be POSITIVE that the clearance issue has been resolved... last i spoke to ben (2 weeks ago) he said they werent gonna do anything bout it. ive heard thats changed since via derek but i just wanna make sure.
pdh can u contact ben or derek again and confirm that we'll be gettin the new version?
Derrick figured that out and showed "Ben" the easy fix to get some more clearance. You just bend the hangers a bit. That may sound kinda hokey, but it works and it's real easy to do.

Hopefully this will answer some questions.
This first pic is the location of the O2 sensor on a stock MSP. It is located between the cats.
http://www.msprotege.com/members/Albert/exhaust/ex3.jpg
The next 2 pics are of the bolt that represents where the O2 sensor is found on a non-MSP Protege sedan.
http://www.msprotege.com/members/Albert/exhaust/ex1.jpg
http://www.msprotege.com/members/Albert/exhaust/ex2.jpg
What needs to be done is to relocate the O2 sensor from between the cats to where it would be on a normal sedan. As you can see, I'm going to have fun with that, because mine's rusted to Hell!
Hope this helps.

albert,
get some "PB Blaster" from any auto parts store.
spray onto the bolt and near the threads area. let it sit for about 15 minutes and then tap with a hammer. respray the PB Blaster on again and let it sit for another 15 min. tap again and try to remove it.

Does anybody know why exactly does the 2nd O2 sensor throw a CEL? Is it just sensing the cats are gone or is it actually managing the engine according to the CEL & giving it different air fuel ratios (fcuk up our car)???(braindead

it is managing the engine. if the o2 sensor detects an out of spec air/fuel mixture it causes the cel to illuminate.
with it on, it is safe to expect poor gas milage and over time it could wear out the spark plugs sooner.
oh yeah, i puts an annoying yellow light on the guage cluster(humor, not to be taken seriously)

Hello,
I don't really have the way to not have the resonator.... It comes built in
with it.
There a reason why he wouldn't want it? This is a *street* designed exhaust
system, that's the reason we put it in.

Sorry to ask again, but this sounds like a sweet deal that will be cheaper than what I was originally thinking.
So, it is a 2.4" ID pipe that goes from the "down pipe" on the MP3 all the way back. Essentially removing the second cat and the stock resonator?
Now, they are also going to have a down pipe? Will the down pipe have a cat in it?
Will the Corksport down pipe bolt up the Flyin' Protege turbo kit?
Will the Wagner motorsport down pipe set up for the NA MP3/Protege 5 bolt up to this exhaust?
Sorry to be a pest, and thanks for any info you can give.

I really want this exhaust, but with a high-flow cat. Corksport's web site makes no mention of this option, but maybe they would consider it if there was enough interest.
pdhaudio83
03-07-2004, 01:01 PM
stuttersc- yes it is a 2.4 mid pipe... that goes from mp3 "DP" all the way back... correct. The DP that they have coming soon is for turbo applications, as far as i know... the DP will NOT have a cat (on the MSP both cats are after the DP in the MP, on the MP3 one cat is built into the mani, and the other in the MP) the corksport DP *SHOULD* bolt to the FM kit, i can't see why not, unless FM did something STUPID... ? I think any correctly sized DP would fit up, but I don't know all that much about DPs/turbo applications/etc.
You aren't being a pest at all, i understand, you cant take chances with, well such a big GB, its super cheap, so it wouldnt be a big mistake ;)
loudpdl- unfortunately, i dont think there would be enough interest... if you really wanted a cat, you *could* just bring the exhaust into a shop and have them weld one in. but then you will see a drop in HP. anything that slows down the flow of exhaust will create additional backpressure which in this case, will limit HP increase. :)
let me know if you want in :)

For $330 and getting basically what I was going to do anyway is too good of a deal. I'd be spending more than that with the Wagner down pipe + Wagner mid-pipe + cat back. I can get a high flow cat and weld it in and still come in under that cost.

Ok, I'm thinking about it, but it's hard for me to justify spending 300+ on an exhaust that will give me .25" over what I have now. I already have a midpipe with no cats so I don't see a gain there either. Does anyone have dyno numbers of a stock car with a 2.5" midpipe? I want to know if most of the gains from the exhaust are from the larger midpipe and lack of cats.

GAspeed- You are correct, the main power benefit for this piece on your car is the cat deletion. As for the can the stock can flows straight through already so you aren't going to see a big gain as a result there. I think from the numbers I've seen your midpipe and this piece would produce similiar numbers with a slight edge to the corky. I think the only difference is this is one flowing piece at the same diameter so the benifit would be marginal. I'm not trying to talk you out of this part, because we would like to have ya join the GB, but I think if your focus is it's benifit over your current midpipe the difference should marginal. I just like ease and convinience of having the combination of catback/midpipe for the price of Apex's midpipe. Also the ease of adding the S-pipe when it becomes available through corksport is a nice feature to make it a complete turbo back.

pdhaudio83: same team same team. If it's ok with you and unwound, can we switch spots on the group buy, tentatively of course, all depending on if unwound has the money or not by this weekend? I would really appreciate it. I know this is a good thing and I would probably end up waiting to get it at this price, I would be dumb not to.
unwound: thanks so much for letting me fill in your spot on this buy man. I can't tell you how cool that is man. I hope you get your money becuase I'm sure your as excited to get this as I am. I don't think you'll have a problem getting the group buy as I got an e-mail from Corksport today saying that if I have to wait then I would still be given the group buy price so I'm sure you will also.
pdhaudio83
03-08-2004, 08:47 PM
umm, you were going to switch on the condition he doesnt have the money by this sat, right
TheJohnny
03-08-2004, 08:53 PM
yeah......he said if he doesn't have the money by saturday and that Corksport honors the group buy price when he's ready, which will probably be the 2nd batch, then he will trade me spots on the group buy. Again, I think it comes down to when unwound will have the money and if Corksport will honor the price of the GB at that time. I know that they are going to have a group buy code that we will use and that it will only be active for so long, so if it's a decent enough time period and unwound agrees with the time period to get in on the group buy then I'm sure we'll be switching, contingent upon all the other stuff above. .... Thanks again

Heathen23
03-08-2004, 09:15 PM
Not that anyone asked my opinion but I would think it's somewhat unfair for people to swap. Just go in order, for example if unwound doesn't have the cash at the time of the initial GB then he would go to the bottom of the list allowing the next available person to order. That just seems fair to everyone who signed up (dunno)
pdhaudio83
03-08-2004, 09:15 PM

I agree with heathen no switching next guy on the list gets the spot...so when do I need to send the money and to who...dont mean to be anxious but if they come in the 11th why do we have to wait the 16th to pay...heres the deal I'm calling ben on the 12th to see exactly what came in...if he has them in stock I'll just buy at the regular price...this waiting stuff is for the birds....sorry to be a dick but saving 50 bux isnt going to be worth the hassle if I have to wait 3 weeks later to get my exhaust..this does not mean I'm dropping off the list, it just means I"m going to attempt to get my exhaust asap...

Please let us know if they offer another GB. I may be interested depending on the sound comparison. Greddy had my car today to prototype the new exhaust setups on it. So I should be getting one in about a month. I am still interested to compare it to the CorkSport, however. I want to make sure I have a nice clean sound, and don't get in trouble with the cops. My other car is so loud, the cops always pull it over. Not to mention the CS is much cheaper, and I need the money. Thanks!

I/We will find out Thursday how many. Shit, maybe we all can get one.
but just hold on! :)
I hear ya bro, but its the fact that he can go down there for me which would be really cool. But since I'm 17 then I'll just leave it at that. I was hoping to save on the shipping factor because the fact that brokerage comes out of nowhere... sure its only another 15bucks but then I may face duty charges and all that other crap.

Sorry, but I'm off the Group Buy so someone can fill in my position if there is room, I was the last one. Sorry about all the questions but I'm doing something different now. Thanks again to pdhaudio83 for setting this up.

I'm going to go back stock for now. I already have a muffler on the car but I hate the damn thing, it's so loud. I can't put a silencer in it either. IT's an aeroturbine, crap ass muffler, never buy it or recommend it, it's a resonating son-of-a-bitch. I really wanted to jump on this but other things have come up. After our drive to Death-Valley I now have a moon crater front end, pits and dimples all over, so I'm going to have the front bumper re-painted instead. Oh yeah, I need a new windshield as well, thanks god I have glass buy-back from my insurance, means I only pay $100.00 for a new windshield .
Anyway, back on topic.
